We are so blessed to have Julie Coad with us leading our worship. Our desire in the worship ministry is to grow. We hope that our time together on Sunday mornings is a time for you to seek the Lord and cry out to Him for His will in your life. Our hope is that in this time of worship YOU will grow up in your faith and trust Jesus with whatever you are going through. We also desire to grow this Worship Ministry – we would love to add other instruments to our band. If you are experienced or know someone that might be interested, please talk to Julie. She will be glad to add qualified members to our worship team. Growth also means allowing new people to come into our gathering and be able to engage with the worship experience – we are constantly striving to be relevant to new people as we seek to grow the Kingdom. Come & let us worship the Lord in His splendor.

A note from Julie…

Hi BCC family!

I am so thankful for the privilege to worship with you all!

One of my passions is teaching music. We are highly interested in organizing free lessons for piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Whether you have never played an instrument before, or you want a refresher course, I’d love to invest in your musical giftings for the Lord!

Please reach out and I can share more details.

In Christ,

Julie

(Jr.& Sr. High Students) The BCC Youth Group meets every Sunday Morning for Small Group/9:30 in the Youth Room for Bible Study. We also meet every Wed. night @ 7pm (right after dinner @ 6:15 in fellowship hall). Every 4th Sunday night is Youth Activity Night – so we plan trips, service projects, and fun stuff to do together as a youth group. Teens - bring your friends and let’s grow the Kingdom of God!

Our teens are deep in study on the topic of

World Views – a topic every teen needs to struggle with before they leave home and journey into a 'not so friendly' world. We are having to think about what we believe and what others believe in relation to real life issues. In our study we are coming to see that God is the Artist > We are the Canvas... the creator of the universe has a plan for us and has just begun to shape us into amazing young people.

The 2019 BCC Karate Class consists of a total of 55 enrolled students with an average of 30 students consistently attending. The BCC Karate Class is held on Tuesdays from 6-7pm and teaches self-defense techniques to meet the requirements for White, Gold, and Orange Belts. The main goals of the BCC Karate class are to teach self-control, respect for others, and exercise for good health habits. The BBC Karate class will not be a combative class and will not allow fighting or exchanging of punching and kicking techniques between students.

The ranks of Blue Belt to Brown Belt will only be taught in the Advanced Karate Class, held on Thursdays from 6-7pm. This Advanced Class will use Traditional Techniques and skills that could be used for practical Self-Defense and Tournament Competition. There will be no Sparring (Sport Karate), Weapons (Sai and Bo Staff Training), Throwing Techniques (Self-Defense Takedowns), Falling Techniques, Board Breaking, or Self Defense Combinations with an opponent during the BCC Karate Class.

The Karate Test is an important step in the study of karate and motivation to progress through the belt system. The successful completion of each test brings the student one step closer to becoming a black belt and students must demonstrate knowledge of certain skills before testing for each Rank.

The specific skills required for each belt test will be provided to each student by Sensei Ronnie Armstrong on their first day of class. The main Instructor for the classes will be Sensei Ronnie Armstrong, under the Supervision of Grandmaster Samuel Barger. Sensei Armstrong will be assisted by Black Belt Instructors, Sensei Robert Hodge, Sensei James Jackson, and Sensei Thomas Philo.

Belt Tests will be scheduled as students start to improve in ability and effort with their required Techniques. Test dates will be posted a minimum of 2 weeks before each test and when students have obtained the necessary number of stripes (see below) to qualify to test. Students will be given testing information around two weeks prior to the testing date.

Following the test, each student is evaluated by an instructor and provided a copy of the written evaluation. This evaluation can be used by the student and the student’s family. Scoring may vary depending on the evaluator and individual students, and should not be used as a basis for comparison among students, as students are evaluated as individuals.

Upon successful completion of a belt test, students are presented with a certification of rank, usually at the next class.

Throughout the year, students are awarded different colored stripes that are added to their belts or Class Attendance Record. These stripes are a way to help the student understand their progress towards their next belt and also a way to celebrate their successes, hard work, and karate spirit.

Black Stripes Black stripes are awarded to students by their instructors when the students have demonstrated skill in the techniques they have been working on. The black stripe acts as a progress report allowing the student and the instructor to know how each student is progressing, and each black stripe shows that the student has worked in class, practiced well, and understands the required techniques to the best of his/her ability.

Red Stripes Red stripes will honor students who demonstrate positive character outside of class.

Yellow Stripes Yellow stripes are awarded to those students who show improvement in their scholastic records or those who have strong academic records.

Blue Stripes Blue stripes are awarded to students who have demonstrated extra effort, focused well in class, have been courteous and respectful, and have set a good example of positive attitude and good spirit.

International Disaster Emergency Services (IDES) is coming July 13th for a food pack event. This is a great chance to help pack emergency meals for those hit by disaster. Last year we packed 30,528 meals and we’d like to top that this year. If you’d like to give toward this, specify “IDES food pack event” in the Memo line of your check.

Allied Churches of Alamance County has hired Jai Baker as the full time director. They continue to work with the United Way and the community to improve their ministry and management of this vital ministry.

Every 2nd Wednesday a team of BCC people serve lunch there. Barney & Brenda Lawrence are heading up this ministry. If you would like to know more or get involved see Steve, Barney or John.

Waypoint Church Partners is praising God for partner church Real Life Christian Church in Chesapeake, VA. After recovering from an F2 Tornado hitting their building 2 years ago, they thought their building was destroyed; it was not. They continued ministry and reopened their building in January with over 1000 people in attendance, and celebrated 5 baptisms.

Dates to Remember! April 28th – Ladies’ Lunch We will leave following the morning worship and meet at The Cutting Board! All ladies are invited to join us for a chance to fellowship together!

June 30th – Picnic in the Park Bring your family, a side dish, and lawn chairs and join us for a picnic! Sub sandwiches will be provided.

The BCC needlework class has had a successful start with an average of 3-4 regular attendees who have come together each week to learn how to knit or crochet items made to donate to needy individuals in our community. Our first project has been to crochet or knit blankets for newborns. We plan to distribute these items to community shelters that provide care for mothers with newborn babies. As our skills grow we hope to make lap blankets and prayer shawls for shut-ins.

We will take a summer break at the end of April and resume in the fall. Thanks to BCC for allowing us to meet, commune, pray, and share Christ’s love.

In this issue of J-Link we take a look at our deacons and worship leader. Read on….

David Capps David is one of our deacons here at BCC. He first came to BCC in 2015 when he and wife Sandy were dating. He was raised as a Christian, and was baptized in the LDS (Mormon) Church at age 10. After attending BCC for a period of time, he decided to rededicate himself to Christ, and was baptized here in 2016.

David and Sandy were married at BCC on July 8, 2017. Between them they have three sons – Kevin Capps, Davis Faucette, and Alex Faucette. David also has two brothers – one in Texas and one in California – and a sister who, along with his mother, live in Albequerque, NM.

David is retired from the US Army with 20+ years of experience. Some of his memorable duties from his military career are serving on the Honor Guard in Washington, DC and several years as a Drill Sergeant. He tells people that the Army saved his life; it provided him with skills and employment when many of his friends were not able to find jobs. It also gave him organizational skills that were invaluable in his post-service employment, as well as in his duties here at the church.

One of David’s main duties at BCC is to oversee our Meals Ministry, in addition to supporting other ministries and leadership of the church. His vision for BCC is growth and spreading the Word. He says we should “get ‘em in the door and hopefully the message will keep them.” He is interested in working with other congregations for community service and outreach.

Outside of church, David is an avid tennis player and loves hiking mountains and waterfalls.

He is grateful for his wife Sandy, his church, and his friends. He greatly admires those with knowledge of Biblical background, citing elders Bruce Buchanan and Steve Dailey as examples.

Jason Miller Jason has been at BCC since 1983, when his mother brought him to church and led him to Christ. He counts this as one of the greatest blessings of his life. Jason’s family includes his father Felix, now deceased, mother Phyllis, and brother Stephen.

Jason has been a deacon at BCC since 2006. He assists the elders where possible, but his primary duty is his service as the church Treasurer, a position for which he is well qualified by virtue of his degree in Accounting from Appalachian State University. His vision for BCC is simple, but important: that whatever we do is what God wants us to do in this part of the world – to please and satisfy Him.

When asked about hobbies, likes, and favorites things, Jason lists cars and motorcycles, dirt bikes, and TV dramas. One of his fond memories is when he went to the aquarium in Atlanta with his parents and his aunt in the first car he ever paid for on his own, a 2006 Honda Element. He said he knew then that he was a grown-up!

Julie Coad Worship leader Julie Coad came to us in January 2019. She considers it a privilege to look at music and determine what works for BCC and is most uplifting to the Lord. She especially likes to look for scripture influences for songs and content.

When you talk with Julie, three passionss become evident early on – gratitude, connection, and expression. She loves the BCC Mission Statement — connecting people to Jesus and each other. She wants to help people learn to express themselves as a means to connecting, then work to leverage that expression of connection to help people understand the Gospel, allowing them to surrender their failures and insecurities to Christ.

She recognizes God’s leading in her own life in her choice of college and in the opening of doors to a major in musical education, which allowed her to come to NC. She feels the Lord has called her to BCC for a purpose.

Julie currently teaches voice, piano, and guitar privately. She formerly taught middle school chorus and recently taught 4th grade for a year at B. Everett Jordan Elementary School in Saxapahaw.

Her family includes her father, a minister in Tampa, FL; her mother, a former nurse and now teacher; and three older siblings who are all married.

She loves nature, paddleboarding, jogging in the woods, learning new instruments, writing music, learning new things in general, and connecting with people.

She feels God is teaching her that her timeline is not what He has in mind for her, and that her identity is first as a sister of Christ and daughter of God.

Ready or not, spring has arrived! The warmer weather, while a blessing from God, ensures a steady workload around our property. We recently had a work day where weeding, painting, and pressure washing was abundant. Soon mulch will be put out and a new look around our sign will take place. Thanks to all who dedicate their time to the upkeep around our property! We also are planning to have gravel brought in to add additional parking at the top of the hill. While talking about parking, we ask all members and return guests, who are familiar with our parking lot here and across the street, to please leave our visitor parking spots for first-time guests. We want to assure any visitors that they are welcome and important to us. You may have also noticed a police vehicle in the lot recently – do not worry, this is a part of our new commitment to the safety of our congregation. We have already begun planning the early stages of a security program here at BCC with the help of local law enforcement. While we have had no threats, we feel it is important to always be ready in an ever changing world. One such security measure is the locking of all doors except our main entrance after 10:30am on Sunday mornings.

You might have also noticed the hard work put into painting and decorating our old building for a kid dedicated wing. Thanks to those who have put in the work to give a fresh look to the older building! Speaking of the building, we are now using our facility 4 days a week every week for worship, meals, Wednesday night Bible study, and outreach programs such as the Ladies Bible Ministry and the Martial Arts Ministry for our local community and school children. This free martial arts program has seen as many as 50 plus new visitors to our facility on a weekly bases and the Ladies Bible study is bursting at the seams and growing weekly as well! Just a few weeks ago, we hosted a conference for Waypoint called "The Art of the Sermon," which is Waypoint’s largest event, gathering church leaders from all around our region. God is doing great things here at BCC as we go out to reach the lost! While all of these things are great, it takes dedicated volunteers to keep going and growing. Perhaps you are willing to help in one of these areas or willing to mow or clean our building? If so, see an Elder for information on how you might be of assistance.

I had the opportunity to serve Honduras in support of a medical group called International Health Services (IHS). This organization brings a group of doctors and support staff down to service the entire country for 2 weeks. MAG (Missionary Air Group) here in Burlington operates a jungle hospital in Rus Rus, Honduras with an air ambulance. Every year MAG’s hospital hosts some of these doctors in what is called a medical brigade. MAG’s aircraft shuttles the doctors back and forth and then is stationed at the hospital for medical transportation to the larger IHS facilities. MAG sent me as the mechanic in support of the aircraft. However, in transit to Honduras I was briefed the aircraft was not going to be available. So I transitioned to a random “fix it” man. Arriving at the hospital our mission was to prepare the hospital to receive hundreds of people and repair many non-working medical equipment. A whole host of lights and a few dentist chairs had to be fixed. It seemed that all the toilets decided to stop working or leak while I was there.

Since an airplane was not going to be the main transportation for the 80 mile trip to the nearest major city. MAG’s Kia 2700 diesel truck became the new (bouncy, teeth-chattering, dusty, and hot) ground ambulance transportation. The simple 20-minute airplane ride turned into a 5.5 hour weaving trek. The truck made 5 (10- hour) trips to transport patients needing care we could not provide in Rus Rus. I went on 4 of those trips because after the 1st one the truck started stalling on the road randomly. After a few days of trouble shooting I discovered that the diesel fuel being provided had mud and water in it. For some reason vehicles do not like to run on water and dirt. As a missionary airplane mechanic you tend to NOT work on airplanes. One reason is that airplanes are so well built and reliable they seldom break down.

I learned the tried and true statement, “In missions you must be patient and very flexible.” It is a good reminder we are in a battle and our enemy (Satan) tries to kill, steal, and destroy any effort to reach people.

The medical event was a success; with all the challenges, the Mosquito people of Nicaragua and Honduras received much needed medical care. I can share many, MANY amazing stories, so feel free to ask me any questions. I don’t know the final numbers, but I know there were over 1200 patients tended to. Also, in the first two days alone the dentists saw 400 patients. With that many people walking through the door the dentists were just pulling teeth. They even trained another IHS maintenance personnel to give shots and pull teeth! He was a 72-year-old “farm boy” from South Dakota who never dreamed he would be pulling teeth in the jungle of Honduras.
