Burlington Catholic The Ascension of The Lord
A Message from
Fr. James M. Mahoney
Dear Burlington Catholic Collaborative, Happy Easter! We are still within the midst of our Easter Season, our 50-day meditation on the mystery of Christ's Resurrection. So this week and next weekend keep wishing people a Happy Easter. I know it may feel funny, but do it anyway. That is what being a Disciple In Mission is all about. Next Sunday we conclude our Easter Season with the Solemnity of Pentecost. In today’s Gospel, Jesus prays not only for those who believe in him but for all who will come to believe in him – i.e. that is us. What a gift to know that Jesus prays for us! And he prays that the love of the Father in him may also be in all of us who believe so that Jesus might be in us as well.
Both Fr. Mark Olejnik and I are looking forward to our new ministries here in the Burlington Catholic Collaborative. Fr. Olejnik’s last name is difficult to pronounce, so he is asking to be called Fr. Mark. Fr. Mark is a fine young man. This is his First Priestly Assignment having been ordained a priest just two weeks ago. Many blessings come to us in a newly ordained priest. It will be our joy to watch him grow in his priesthood over these years he will be with us. Please offer him your support and prayers and love.
It will take a little while for both of us to settle in. Please be patient as we learn where things are and how we do things here in Burlington. This is a big change for both of us. Fr. Mark is getting used to being a Priest. He will be experiencing so many “Firsts” as a newly ordained. Regarding myself, I have spent the last 13 years as pastor of St. Bridget in Abington and then for the last 5 years as pastor of both St. Bridget and Holy Ghost Parish in Whitman called the Light of Christ Catholic Collaborative. I loved those two communities, and I know I will love these two communities here in Burlington.

7th Sunday of Easter At the parish retreat, a surgeon gave a talk about her relationship with God, comparing it to the first time she was on her own in the operating room. Her mentor and guide sent her to do a routine surgery, assuring her that she had all the skills and knowledge she needed to perform her task well. As she worked, she could hear the senior surgeon in her mind, talking her through the operation. She had been well trained. Jesus leaves the Twelve well-equipped to complete the mission with which they are charged. He revealed to them the mysteries of faith and empowered them to teach, preach, heal and forgive. The power of God works through them as they proclaim the love and mercy of God. He would leave them in body, but never in Spirit. Faith can call us to remarkable challenges, things we may think are beyond our ability to do. But God does not call us to failure. If He asks something of us, He will provide what we need to complete the task. Look at the courage of the martyrs, the determination of the saints and the example of so many good and holy people you see every day. They live and practice their faith every day, in prayer and in deed. You can too. You already have everything you need.
- James Gaffney
Because some of the Masses in both parishes are at the same time, we may not get a chance to see all of you for a week or two. Here is a picture of Fr. Mark and I moments before his First Mass so you will know what we look like. Fr. Mark is the younger and taller one with darker hair. Let us pray for each other. God bless,
Father Mahoney
