NEWS YOU CAN USE!
News From the President’s Desk
It was a very good meeting yesterday! It was nice to see so many of
you come out for the event, with the rainy weather we have been
having. I know I really needed the information shared with us from our
guest speaker, Terrie from Bill’s Sewing in Hildebran about the
maintenance of our sewing machines. I am guilty of taking my
machine for granted. Learning a few simple TLC moves you can do
will help your machine purr like a cat and was super helpful. I know
we all appreciate the hard work our Program team of Mary Stang and
Freda Rosenthal are doing. Their work really makes it fun to come to
our therapy and general guild meetings.
A special reminder, our New Member Tea is on February 13th
at
10AM. If you would like to join us, to meet and welcome them to our
guild, please let Hospitality know so we can have enough goodies to
go around. We would love to have you!
I would also like to thank Julie Pearson for helping us out this week
by taking such good notes for us. We are all hoping Linda Myers will
be able to join soon. See you in February!

Quilters’ Chatter – February 2017
Burke Quilters’ Guild General Meeting Minutes
January 23, 2017
Welcome: Debbie Mangold opened the meeting at 10AM by wishing everyone a Happy New Year! She
welcomed the 9 new members who joined in 2016. Diane Hubbard, who joined in December,
introduced herself. And then, Dinah Weaver - who joined today introduced herself. Debbie
reminded everyone of the New Members Welcome Tea on Monday, February 13th at 10AM.
She encouraged everyone to attend and help welcome our new members. Based on a show of
hands, at least 20 members expect to attend.
Announcements: Julie Pearson requested donations for a sewing ministry in Belize. The ministry is part of a
program called Kids Konnect 4 Jesus. Women are making and selling purses, bags and pot
holders. They would also like to make school uniforms for children (hunter green, dark blue,
grey or khaki), tablecloths, seat cushions and upholstery. They are asking for donations of fabric,
sewing supplies, and sewing machines in good working order (heavy duty machines as well). If
you have anything to donate, please contact Julie Pearson at 828-874-8999 or email her at

Quilters’ Chatter – February 2017
Debbie Mangold informed the group that we have been invited to display our quilts in
Morganton City Hall, one year from now, during February and March of 2018. We would have
2 floors to hang our quilts. They can be as large as 10 feet or as small as a block. A show of
hands indicated that members approve of the Guild’s participation.
Debbie Mangold also announced that the budget for this year was approved by the Board, but the
members still need to vote; which will happen at the February meeting. Linda Henson will
include a “draft” of the budget in the yearbook. Once the budget is finalized, the yearbook page
can be updated.
Minutes of Previous meeting: There were no corrections or additions to the minutes. Karel Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes and that was seconded by Judy Pearson. Minutes were approved as read.
Guest Programs: First Program - Mary Stang introduced Amber Halliburton and Sharon Taylor from Sunshine Courage Quilts. Amber shared her story of personal tragedy and how it led to the formation of Sunshine Courage Quilts. They create quilts for children and families of the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Association and need at least 11 quilts for this year’s ceremony held in May 2017 for those people who lost their lives in 2016. Sharon invited members to assist by donating jelly rolls, fat quarters, yardage, batting, monetary contributions or by making a quilt. Quilts should be 50-60” by 70-80” (throw size), any color/pattern, for either adult or child, with traditional batting and binding construction. Guild Members were also invited to join the sewing group making these quilts. For more information, see Sunshine Courage Quilts on Facebook or contact Amber at 828-433-7000 or 828-430-1197. Second Program: Mary Stang introduced Terrie Townsend from Bill’s Sewing, located on Main Street in Hildebran. Terrie gave an extremely informational program on the importance of sewing machine maintenance. Terrie both demonstrated and explained various routine maintenance steps and tips to help keep all of our machines running smoothly. She told us that we should make up a sewing machine “First Aid Kit” with several basic items kept near your machine. It may prevent a service call (and the cost) when the answer is right before you. Terrie said that the number one enemy of our expensive machines is lint; and, that lint is inherent when you sew any project, but especially in quilting. She even showed us how to clean out the extremely narrow parts of the thread track with a soft cloth. It was pointed out that you should clean your machine between each project you do and that you make sure to change your needle once a month. She gave handouts which included machine needles. In ending her program, Terrie asked for questions and then donated six rulers that were given away as door prizes.

Committee Reports: Quilts of Valor - Cindy Grimord announced that on March 29
th from 9-11AM at the Senior
Center there will be a pancake breakfast to celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of the Vietnam War.
Twelve Quilts of Valor will be awarded during the breakfast. If you’re interested in attending
or helping, please contact Cindy. If you’re looking for a pattern, Cindy brings a notebook filled
with Quilt of Valor patterns to each meeting.
Newsletter: Terry Andrews-Kramer asked that any information for the newsletter be submitted by Saturday,
January 28th. She is also looking for a recipe to include in the next newsletter.
Hospitality: Hope Estepan reminded us about the New Member Tea on February 13
th beginning at 10 AM.
Please join us to welcome the 2016 new members.
Challenge:
Phyllis Fox encouraged everyone to get busy on their Challenge quilt. This year’s theme is
Home Sweet Home and rules are as follows:
1. The perimeter of must be more than 100 inches but less than 200 inches.
2. It may be any shape
3. It must have a house.
4. It must have a tree or parts of a tree, trunk or limbs and leaves.
5. You must use 75% of the yellow cutting of fabric given to all members who want to do
the Challenge. Fabric may be cut to smaller pieces but you still have to use 75% of the
piece. See Phyllis if you need the fabric.
6. The yellow fabric must be used on the FRONT of your quilt.
7. Entry must have three layers and be quilted by the entering member by hand or machine.
8. Only one entry from each member will be accepted by the committee.
Wee Care:
Susan Briggs asked members to please “take and make” a kit from our abundant closet.
Sunshine and Shadows: Phyllis Fox sent cards to Susan Fetner on the death of her mother, Vonnie Corley on March 17.
She also sent a card to the family of Margie Newton who was a Master Quilter and a longtime
member of our Guild. She sent Linda Myers a card as well.

Shared Recipes
This section is meant for recipes that our members have tried and served to great demand for
more! Instead of making more, these members have decided to share their recipes. We have a
bounty of shared and “judged good” recipes this month.
From Phyllis Fox – New England Chicken Chowder 5 slices cooked bacon, 2 bay leaves
sliced thinly crosswise 3 cups chicken stock
4 tbsp. Butter ¾ lb. boneless, skinless chicken thighs,
3 tbsp. flour cut into bite size pieces
¾ lb. red potatoes, ½ cup heavy cream (or milk)
cut in ½ inch pieces 1 can (15 oz.) corn kernels, drained
2 lg. ribs celery with leaves, sliced 3 tbsp. finely chopped fresh chives
1 lg. white onion, chopped
In a large pot, cook bacon till crisp. Move to paper towels to drain.
In same pot, cook the butter and flour over medium, stirring constantly, until light brown. Add
the potatoes, celery, onion, carrots, garlic and bay leaves. Stir until coated. About two minutes.
Stir in the chicken and the chicken stock. Cook, partly covered, over medium heat, stir
occasionally, until the chicken is well cooked, about 20 minutes.
In blender, puree cream with half the corn. Stir puree and remaining corn into the soup. Season
to taste with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 bowls and top with bacon and chives.
Enjoy!
From Karel Johnson – Blueberry Scones 2 cups sifted flour ½ cup butter or margarine
3 tsp. baking powder ½ cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon salt 1 egg
2 tbsp. sugar 1 cup fresh or dry-packed frozen blueberries
Sift dry ingredients and cut in butter with pastry blender. Add buttermilk to egg (reserve 1 tbsp.
unbeaten egg white.) Beat until blended. Pour into dry ingredients all at once, stirring quickly.
Lightly fold in blueberries. Turn out on slightly floured board. Pat into ¼ or ½ inch thickness.
Cut into squares, triangles or diamonds with floured knife. Brush with reserved egg white diluted
with one teaspoon of water. Sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake on cookie sheet in hot oven
(425 degrees) for 10 – 15 minutes. Makes 15 to 20 medium scones When cooled, ice with a light,
white icing (optional.)

From Janet Hunt – Haddock (Poor Man’s Lobster) 1 tsp. paprika 1 bay leaf
1 lb. thawed haddock 1 tsp. salt
¼ cup butter
Pan with enough water to cover fish.
Bring water, salt and bay leaf to a boil. Add fish. Boil for approximately 5 minutes. Remove fish
from water. Pour melted butter and paprika over fish. Broil 2 minutes.
Quilters Top Ten Tips:
Fool your Feed Dogs
Trick
If your machine doesn’t
allow you to drop the
feed dogs for free-
motion quilting, tape a
business card over them
to prevent them from
grabbing the fabric
beneath the presser foot.
Ideal Storage Spot
An unused bed
makes an ideal
storage spot for
quilts!
Press & Rest
Works Best
Once fabric pieces have
been pressed, let them
cool in place. It
prevents distortion of
bias edges.
Mistake Proof Trimming Method
When you want to trim the batting, but NOT the backing, on a quilted piece, slip the edge of your
rotary cutting mat between the backing and batting before you begin. This will prevent you from
inadvertently cutting into the backing fabric.
See Before You Sew
Experiment with your
arrangement of blocks
by positioning them
on a bedsheet until
you are satisfied.
Once you’re pleased,
pin them to the sheets
before carrying them
to your sewing
machine. See It To Believe It
To decide if your quilting thread contrasts or
blends the way you wish, practice your quilting
designs on quilt sandwiches made from the same
fabrics used in your quilt. If
the color is not right, experiment with thread a
shade lighter or darker.

Quilters’ Chatter – February 2017
February Therapy Day
New Members Welcome Tea on Monday, February 13th at 10AM.
February Meeting, February 27th
, 10AM
Patricia Lackey will present a program about Patterns and Picture Quilting.
Windows Work Wonders To see what a medium – or large print
fabric will look like when it’s cut into
smaller pieces, make a template window
to carry with you when you’re fabric
shopping.
Seam Alignment Secret
When two seams will be joined together, press
the seam al
lowances in opposite directions. This helps
distribute the bulk and ensures the seams will
align.
Disguise Ugly Bearding
If you’re working on a dark
colored quilt, consider using
black batting. The bearding
will blend more against dark
fabric than if you used
white.
