Women in Bahrain are not far from achieving

workplace equality to similar level in western countries, believe Bahraini women.

According to Bayt.com’s Working Women in the Middle East Survey, 52 per cent of women in Bahrain believe that the country has achieved workplace equality ‘to some extend’.

The question posed to the women was “Compared to working women in Western countries, to what extent have women in your country of residence reached the same level of workplace equality?” . To this the majority of women from Bahrain responded with ‘to an extend’, 24 per cent responded with ‘to a large extend’, 5 per cent said ‘not at all’ and the rest were unsure.

The survey was aimed at analyzing the perceptions of women in the region when it comes to equality at work, motivations for employment,

challenges faced at work, and life ambition.

50 per cent of the female respondents from Bahrain, however, reported they believe they work less than their male colleagues.

Only 5 per cent said they work the equal amount of hours as men while 40 per cent said they work more hours than men, others were unsure. Responding to another question, 55 per cent of the women from Bahrain stated that they are conformable with working in a mixed gender environment while 10 per cent said they were extremely uncomfortable, others were

neutral or ‘uncomfortable to an extend’.

“Financial independence emerges as the top reason for working (59 per cent) followed by the ability to support / financially contribute to the household (50 per cent),” the survey report stated.

“Data for the ‘Working Women in the Middle East and North Africa’ survey was collected online from October 26 to November 26, 2017, with 4053 female respondents living in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and the UAE,” Bayt.com stated.

The adoption of technological innovations in education is critical to promote 21st

century skills for a new generation of leaners that are labeled as digital natives. Educators are confronted with a challenge to cope with new learners that are attached to smart phones and who have access to open learning resources and social media. Therefore, new models and tools are to be developed by educators to attract the attention of new learners who suffer from short attention span. Innovative education for a new era need to address a set of key issues including instilling a culture of innovation, quality assurance and students’ testing, methods of teaching and curriculum development.

Unlike current teachers who may be labeled as digital refugees, young learners are defined as digital natives who have to deal with high-tech solutions and co-creation through combinations of solutions in the era of emerging technologies like gamifications, 3D printing,

green technologies, smart homes and cities, and self-drive cars. Standard students’ testing need to be re-thought to address new competencies beyond logical and verbal intelligence to address naturalistic and aesthetic intelligence. Moreover, new ways of communicating the curriculum is needed to enhance both logical and critical thinking. This implies learning by doing and emphasis on team work, experimentation and acceptance of failure.

As argued by Dewey, pragmatic models in learning are simply produced through collaborative teams working on real problems. This is in line with the concept of design thinking approach that emphasizes user-driven innovation, empathy, team work, experimentation, and prototyping. Harnessing design thinking which is developed by Stanford University, there is a focus on developing learners’ skills through hands-on case studies. Research shows that the implementation of

curriculum that integrates design thinking help students develop new skill set including team work and action learning.

The process of design thinking which may be framed as “slow” and “fast” thinking contributes to developing creative mindsets. In such a process, the instructor has a key role to encourage a climate of playfulness in the classroom. Moreover, the school is viewed as a microcosm in which students practice both experiential learning and problem solving. In reality, teams are exposed to real case studies such as to start a small business through walking the innovation journey as depicted in the innovation canvas to develop a business case.

In Bahrain, innovative education is manifested in the model schools and the adoption of problem-based learning in higher education as applied at the medical school in the Arabian Gulf University. This learning mode moves beyond problem solving and traditional instruction to nurture the multiple intelligences through design thinking. In essence, the design thinking process equip learners with tools and skills to solve wicked problems through system thinking and complex reasoning.

In sum, it is imperative to mainstream design thinking concepts in education in GCC to instill a culture of innovation and to unlock the human potential to meet the vision 2030 targets.

Manila

Rescuers in the Philippines searched yesterday for survivors of a storm

that triggered floods and landslides and killed about 200 people, left scores missing and thousands homeless, most of whom apparently ignored warnings to move to safety.

Misery in the largely Christian Philippines was compounded by the death of at least 37 people in a shopping mall fire, officials said on Christmas Eve.

The Philippines is battered by about 20 typhoons a year and warnings are routinely issued, but the level of destruction wreaked by tropical storm Tembin on the southern island of Mindanao from late on Friday came as a surprise.

“It happened very fast, the flood waters quickly rose filling our house,” farmer Felipe Ybarsabal, 65, told Reuters by telephone, saying he and his family had to run to higher ground.

“We weren’t able to save anything from the house. There was no help from anyone because it was so fast. Everything was two to three meters under water in less than an hour.”

Police and disaster officials said they expected the toll of about 200 dead to rise with more fatalities likely to be discovered in remote farm communities and coastal areas, as rescuers reached them and restored communication and

power links.Disaster officials said 159 people were

listed as missing while about 70,000 had been forced from their homes.

Soldiers and police joined emergency workers and volunteers to search for survivors and victims, clear debris and restore power and communications.

Disaster officials said many villagers had ignored warnings to leave coastal areas and move away from riverbanks, and got swept away when flash floods and landslides struck.

The storm was moving west on Sunday, over some outlying Philippine islands and the South China Sea toward southern Vietnam, at a speed of about 20 kph (12 mph).

It intensified into a typhoon with winds of 120 kph (75 mph) as it moved out of the Philippine area of responsibility, the national meteorological agency said.

The United Nations was ready to help the Philippines, a spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

Pope Francis offered his prayers for the people of Mindanao while delivering his weekly blessing to a crowd on St Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

“Merciful Lord, take in the souls of the dead and comfort those who are suffering as a result of this calamity,” he said.

Last week, 46 people were killed in

the central Philippines when a typhoon hit. In 2013, super typhoon Haiyan killed nearly 8,000 people and left 200,000 families homeless.

The south of the Philippines has been plagued by insurgencies by communist rebels and Muslim separatists for years, as well as often bearing the brunt of tropical storms roaring in from the Pacific.

The region was hit by another disaster on the weekend when fire swept through a shopping mall in the city of Davao, killing at least 37 people, most of them workers at a call center, city government officials said.

The vice mayor of the southern city of Davao, Paolo Duterte, said the chance of survival for any of the 37 people missing at the NCC Mall was “zero”.

The fire broke out on Saturday at a furniture shop on the mall’s third level and quickly engulfed an outsourcing business on the top floor, said a spokeswoman for the city government, Ma. Teresita Gaspan.

The cause was not known but an investigation was being launched as authorities searched for the bodies of the victims.

Kuwait signs LNG import deal with ShellKuwait City

Kuwait Petroleum Corp. signed a 15-year liquefied

natural gas import deal with Royal Dutch Shell Plc to help the oil exporting nation meet growing domestic energy demand.

The sales purchasing agreement with Shell International Trading Middle

East Ltd. will start in 2020, the companies said Sunday in an emailed statement.

Shell has supplied Kuwait with the super-cooled fuel since 2010 and declined to say how much gas is covered under the new contract. While KPC is working to boost local natural gas production, Kuwait  has a “pressing

requirement” to secure natural gas supplies in the meantime, they said.

LNG could help meet Kuwait’s domestic demand for power to run air conditioners during hot summer months and cut the amount of crude oil burned instead of exported for profit. The contract will cover 2 million to 3 million

metric tons of LNG a year, priced at 11 percent below a Brent benchmark, a person familiar said, asking not to be identified because terms of the deal are private.

“The big issue for Kuwait is they burn a lot of oil, most of their power generated is from oil, and so importing LNG for them is cheaper and

frees up oil for export,” Robin Mills, chief executive officer of Dubai-based Qamar Energy, said by phone.

Kuwait wants cleaner burning energy sources such as natural gas to reduce emissions and improve air quality, according to the Shell and KPC statement. (YahooFinance/Bloomberg)

Reliance aims to become big clean energy providerMumbai

India’s Reliance Industries Ltd will become a major provider

of clean energy in the country, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said, as the South Asian nation transitions to renewable energy sources from fossil fuels.

India is one of the world’s biggest users of coal, and renewable energy such as solar power is a priority for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

“Can Reliance become a leading provider of clean and affordable energy to India? Yes we can and yes we will,” billionaire Ambani said at a function on Saturday to mark 40 years of the company.

Reliance, owner of the world’s biggest refining complex and also a leading petrochemicals player, expanded its tie-up with BP earlier this year to meet India’s rising fuel and renewable energy demand. (Reuters)

Protect your information by creating a secure pass-word that makes sense to you, but not to others. Most people don’t realize there are a number of common techniques used to crack passwords and plenty more ways we make our accounts vulnerable due to simple and widely used passwords.

Make sure you use different passwords for each of your accounts.Be sure no one watches when you enter your password.

Always log off if you leave your device and anyone is around—it only takes a moment for someone to steal or change the password.Avoid entering passwords on computers you don’t control (like computers at an Internet café or library)—they may have mal-ware that steals your passwords.Avoid entering passwords when using unsecured Wi-Fi connec-tions (like at the airport or coffee shop)—hackers can inter-cept your passwords and data over this unsecured connection.

Don’t tell anyone your password. Your trusted friend now might not be your friend in the future. Keep your passwords safe by keeping them to yourself.

Depending on the sensitivity of the information being pro-tected, you should change your passwords periodically, and avoid reusing a password for at least one year.

Do use at least eight characters of lowercase and uppercase let-ters, numbers, and symbols in your password. Remember, the more the merrier. It’s okay to write down your passwords, just keep them away from your computer and mixed in with other numbers and let-ters so it’s not apparent that it’s a password.

Check your password strength. If the site you are signing up for offers a password strength analyzer, pay attention to it and heed its advice. (McAfee)

Baghdad

Iraq has reached an initial deal with China’s state-

run Zhenhua Oil to develop the southern portion of the East Baghdad oilfield, the oil ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

Iraq is seeking the help of Zhenhua Oil to increase production from East Baghdad oilfield to 40,000 barrels per day within five years as of the start of the development operations, Asim Jihad said in a statement.

Iraqi oil officials have estimated the East Baghdad field, a “super giant” with around 8 billion barrels of crude reserves, has

the potential to produce 120,000 barrels of oil per day.

Under the initial deal with Zhenhua Oil, which will be announced in formal ceremonies to be held in Baghdad on Monday, the Chinese firm will commit to building an “oil residential complex”, the statement said.

Oil Ministry officials said increasing East Baghdad crude production would help feed nearby refineries and power stations and free up more oil for exports from the southern region.

Iraq produces and exports the bulk of its crude from the southern region.

Kirkuk pipelineIraq has given foreign

energy companies a month to signal their interest in building a new export pipeline from the Kirkuk oilfields in the north of the country.

The new pipeline will replace an old and severely damaged section of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline. It will start from oilfields near Kirkuk and extend to the Fish-Khabur border area with Turkey.

Iraq’s oil ministry set Jan. 24 as the deadline for companies to submit letters of interest in building the new pipeline, the ministry said in a statement. (Reuters)

It may be hard to come to grips with your emotions today. You may be flightier than usual. Realize that this is to your advantage. Come out of the quicksand and take a breath of fresh air. An upbeat attitude is critical to making progress in anything you undertake. Find the answers you seek in conversations with others.

Your words may get you into trouble today, so be careful of what you say. Try to keep a lid on hasty comments fuelled by intense emotions. These comments may come out the wrong way and be used against you later. Bring your cheerful disposition to the group and leave your stubborn attitude at home. Goals and discipline may be major themes today.

You may be a bit confused today. Other people’s actions may send you into a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. You may be sensitive regarding your goals. Discipline is a key aspect of today. Stay true to the principles you hold most dear and you won’t go wrong. Friends are waiting in the wings to help you.

Communication is key today. Make your intentions known right away to avoid unnecessary confusion. The more you can settle now, the better off you’ll be down the road. You’re the missing piece of the puzzle, so step up to the podium in order to fill your very important role. The bridge you provide fills in a critical gap that will be of great aid to others.

Channel your energy into constructive tasks. Look to where you can make important connections. There’s a fine line between helpful suggestions and manipulation. Try to avoid the latter. There’s something holding you back. This restriction is probably for the best. You could get burned out by constantly going to extremes in every action.

Restrictive forces may come into conflict with you today. The good news is that you should be able to find a space of peace within your emotions. Seek a mediator who can help you sort out stalemates that may exist between you and others. Opportunities for freedom and autonomy are out there waiting for you to grab. Seek the bizarre and unconventional ways of doing things.

A planned, disciplined approach works best today. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s important to connect with others now. Trying to do things alone may seem like the right thing to do, but you’re much more efficient when you enlist the help of others. Don’t be shy about approaching people you don’t know very well.

This is a terrific day for you. Your emotional state of mind is wonderfully upbeat. Things should be flowing your way, and there’s an instinctual knowing that will help you navigate through whatever rough spots may come your way, if any. Take this opportunity to secure commitments from others and nail down plans that you intend to complete.

This is a great day for you. You should find that your general mood is excellent. You’ll have the perfect thing to say in every situation. Your adaptable nature will come in handy, as people around you will be quite rigid and unyielding. The more disciplined you are when it comes to emotions, the better off you’ll be. Feel free to be the social butterfly.

Things may be mentally focused today, which could conflict with your emotional nature. Strong opinions may crop up, and you should take the time to listen. Don’t force things to come out if they aren’t ready. If the apple isn’t ready to fall from the tree, don’t wrench it off. Wait until the apple is ripe and the fruit will fall to you effortlessly.

Communication is a big theme of the day for you. Every time you speak, a large audience is listening to every word. The stronger you are at expressing your opinions, the better. You’re flighty today, jumping from one thing to the next, but this is fine. You may get quite a bit done when you act in this fashion.

Your emotions may feel restricted today, but this could be for the best. Try to take a lighthearted approach to the situation, and don’t get too serious about anything. The more flexible your attitude, the better off you’ll be. Keep your feelings under control by not reading too deeply into the subtleties of things.

Moscow

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny

cleared the first hurdle on Sunday toward taking part in next year’s presidential election, even though the central election commission has previously ruled him ineligible to run.

Navalny, 41, is a fierce opponent of President Vladimir Putin, who is widely expected to win re-election in March, extending his 17 years in power.

On Sunday Navalny, a

veteran campaigner against corruption among Russia’s elite, won the initial support of 742 people at a gathering in a district of Moscow, above the minimum 500 required to initiate a presidential bid.

But Navalny now needs to be officially registered as a candidate by Russia’s central election commission, which has previously said he is ineligible due to a suspended prison sentence that he says was politically motivated. (Reuters)

The latest U.N. sanctions against North Korea are

an act of war and tantamount to a complete economic blockade against it, North Korea’s foreign ministry said on Sunday, threatening to punish those who supported the measure.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Friday for its recent intercontinental ballistic missile test, seeking to limit its access to refined petroleum products and crude oil and its earnings from workers abroad.

The U.N. resolution seeks to ban nearly 90 percent of refined petroleum exports

to North Korea by capping them at 500,000 barrels a year and, in a last-minute change, demands the repatriation of North Koreans working abroad within 24 months, instead of 12 months as first proposed.

The U.S.-drafted resolution also caps crude oil supplies to North Korea at 4 million barrels a year and commits the Council to further reductions if it were to conduct another nuclear test or launch another ICBM.

The North Korean foreign ministry said its nuclear weapons were a self-defensive deterrence not in contradiction of international law. (Reuters)

The world’s largest amphibious aircraft,

the China-made AG600, made its maiden flight on Sunday, and comes as the latest milestone  in the country’s efforts to modernise its military. State television showed live images of the AG600 lifting

off from Zhuhai airport in the southern province of Guangdong, which sits on the South China Sea coast. It returned about an hour later and taxied to its stand accompanied by martial music and greeted by crowds waving Chinese flags.

Do you think that the UN and world nations are doing the right thing by confronting North Korea with more sanctions?

Manila

Fire swept through a shopping mall in the

Philippines killing at least 37 people, most of them workers at a call center, city government officials said yesterday.

The vice mayor of the southern city of Davao, Paolo Duterte, said the chance of survival for any of the 37 people missing at the NCC Mall was “zero”.

“Let us pray for them,” said Duterte, the eldest son of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The fire broke out on Saturday at a furniture store on the mall’s third level and quickly engulfed an outsourcing business on the upper floor, said a spokeswoman for the city government, Ma. Teresita Gaspan,

The cause was not known but an investigation was being launched, she said.

President Duterte and his daughter, Sara Duterte, who is mayor of the city, visited the scene late on Saturday to meet anxious relatives of the missing and survivors.

Six people were rescued and taken to hospital.

The mall’s marketing manager, Janna Abdullah Mutalib, said the fire started Saturday morning at the third floor where clothes, appliances and furniture are sold, after a storm hit Davao and flooded parts of the city. Except for a grocery at the ground floor and the business outsourcing company at the top floor, the shopping areas were still closed to the public when the fire started mid-morning, preventing

a bigger tragedy amid the peak Christmas shopping season.

Duterte served as Davao mayor for many years before being elected to the presidency last year.

It’s been a difficult year for the tough-talking, 72-year-old leader, who faced his most serious crisis when hundreds of pro-Islamic State group extremists laid siege on Marawi city, also in the southern third of the Philippines. He declared martial law in the south to deal with the insurrection, which troops crushed in October.

The storm that blew out of the southern Philippines Sunday reportedly left more than 120 people dead with 160 others still missing. (Reuters/AP)

London Zoo has reopened, one day after a fire that killed

four meerkats and an aardvark. The zoo said on its website

Sunday it will operate normally, including visits with Santa. It says fire experts are confident the zoo can operate safely.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. It broke out early Saturday morning near a cafe and the meerkat enclosure.

Staff and firefighters tried to remove animals from the area as quickly as possible but were unable to rescue Misha, a nine-year-old aardvark, and the four meerkats.

The zoo in central London at the edge of Regent’s Park is a popular attraction that often draws heavy holiday crowds.

Some members of the zoo staff were treated for smoke inhalation and shock but there were no severe injuries.

In the heart of old Lisbon, there’s a “hospital” that treats patients who

are small and fragile, often mangled and battered, and sometimes more than 100 years old.

This rare facility mends the cracked head, broken limb or missing eye of many a child’s favourite toy -- their doll.

The loving care given at Lisbon’s doll hospital has been going on for five generations.

“We have clients from all over the world and all ages. There are museums which ask us to restore pieces, also private collectors, but the vast majority of our clients

are individuals -- people who are sentimentally attached” to their dolls, says Manuela Cutileiro, 72, the hospital’s owner.

The dolls all have a patient file and are painstakingly restored by the skilled hands of three women “surgeons”, who give them a new body part or hair, chosen from drawers full of pieces of dolls, a macabre collection of heads, limbs and eyes.

The establishment, known as Hospital de Bonecas, was founded in 1830 and is described in the tourist guides to Portugal’s capital as one of the oldest doll hospitals still in

operation.“They say we are among the last

in the world to do this work,” says Cutileiro, a former school teacher.

But she shrugs off accolades. “We do our work in our little corner, without worrying about records or statistics.”

Some 4,000 dolls can be found inside. There are 100-year-old dolls with porcelain heads, along with dolls dressed in costumes from different regions of Portugal, as well

as some modern Barbies.“For us a contemporary doll

is 20 or 30 years old. The old ones are those which are already centenarians,” says Cutileiro, carrying on the family enterprise.

Its origins go back to the 19th century when “a little old lady”, Carlota da Silva Luz, would make rag dolls, sitting in front of her herb shop in Praca da Figueira, where there was a large outdoor market.

Over time, the aromatic and medicinal herbs gave way to shelves of dolls, which today fill a window display at the entrance to the hospital, with a museum dedicated to them on the first floor.

And it seems as if the pace of times past continues at the doll surgery. No rush procedures here.

“We make sure that time passes less quickly here than it does outside,” says Cutileiro. “People have to wait.” (AFP)

India complete series whitewash

Mumbai, India

It was far from a dominating batting display after young

bowlers’ inspiring show but India managed to inflict a 3-0 series whitewash on Sri Lanka with a tense five-wicket win in the third Twenty20, yesterday.

Sri Lankan hopes to end the miserable tour on a high were raised when India struggled in a 136-run chase but eventually the hosts crossed the finish line with four balls to spare.

Sri Lanka will go home with just one ODI win from this tour while India would head to South Africa with convincing victories in all three formats.

Supremely confident Indian

bowlers came out firing with Jaydev Unadkat being outstanding yesterday even as the Lankans appeared to be in dilemma as if to attack or stay patient.

In a hurry to collect runs, they ended up playing poor lofted shots on good balls, resulting in tame dismissals and put on board a modest 135 for seven.

India lost in-form openers -- captain Rohit Sharma (27) and KL Rahul (4) -- early, which

affected their run-rate badly as Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey found the going tough against a fired-up Lankan attack.

No boundary was scored for more than six overs at one stage during India’s chase with scoreboard moving at snail’s pace with runs mostly coming in singles.

Iyer broke the shackles with a long-off six off Dasun Shanaka but was soon run out in an unfortunate manner after

ahead of MS Dhoni this time but did not last long and was caught behind off Shanaka, whom Pandey had smashed for two consecutive fours in the same over.

Paceman Dushmantha Chameera cleaned up Pandey (32 off 29 balls) with a faster but straight delivery, bringing Dhoni at the crease with India requiring 28 from 23 balls.

Boundaries were still hard to come but Dinesh Karthik (18 not out) tilted the match in India’s favour by hitting a massive six off Nuwan Pradeep’s full toss in the last ball of the 19th over. (PTI)

South Africa talisman AB de Villiers has declared himself

fit for the challenge of day-night test ahead of the one-off match against Zimbabwe at St George’s Park from Tuesday.

It will be the first test appearance in almost two years for the 33-year-old, who had taken time off from the longer version of game while continuing to dominate bowlers in limited overs.

“I pride myself in the fact that I can adapt to certain conditions

and formats,” he told reporters as the Proteas prepare for the first ever-four day match, also the first test to be played under lights in South Africa.

“I have worked hard on my game over the last six months. I started in July facing red balls at the University of Pretoria, getting some technical stuff sorted out, I feel more ready than ever to take it on.

“I faced a few pink balls here last night on a spicy wicket, it was really tough. Then again it’s a great challenge, it’s the ultimate

form of the game, it’s the greatest challenge to come out on top when the ball is moving around a bit.”

De Villiers did not see much difference between the formats.

“It’s a mindset, a little tweak here and there. You have to have more patience with the red ball but you still have to play cricket strokes, it’s not like you are playing rugby, it is still cricket.

“As long as you respect the conditions, sum up what is going on in a match situation, you can make it work.” (Reuters)

BRIEF SCOREIndia 139 for 5 (Pandey 32, Chameera 2-22, Shanaka 2-27) beat Sri Lanka 135 for 7 (Gunaratne 36, Unadkat 2-15, Pandya 2-25) by five wickets

England tail ready for more bouncer barrage

London

England fast bowler James Anderson expects Australia to continue peppering the touring tailenders with short-

pitched deliveries in the remaining two Ashes tests and says he has no problems with that.

Former England captain Michael Atherton has urged umpires to invoke cricket’s laws and protect England’s tailenders from Australia’s relentless “bodyline” bowling Down Under.

Anderson was struck on the side of his helmet in the third test, which Australia won convincingly to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, and was seen talking to umpires after the game.

“I have actually chatted to the umpires about it during this series and they say at test level you should be able to handle short balls. That is a clear message to get in the nets and practice against bouncers,” Anderson wrote in his column for the Telegraph.

“I was not quizzing the umpires or asking them to stop it happening. I was just interested in their opinion. I guess we just need to get better at playing them. I have no problem with that. It is part and parcel of the game.” (Reuters)

Nadal out of season opener

in Abu DhabiAbu Dhabi

Rafa Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s season-opening

exhibition event in Abu Dhabi due to ongoing fitness problems, the world number one has said.

The 16-time grand slam champion, who won the French and U.S. Opens earlier this year, withdrew from the ATP Finals in November after struggling with a knee injury during his round-robin defeat by Belgian David Goffin.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, who has previously played at the tournament on eight occasions, will be replaced by compatriot Roberto

Bautista Agut.“It was a tough 2017 and I need

to take my calendar in a different way in order to be ready,” Nadal told the Mubadala World Tennis Championships website.

“For this reason, I have sadly announced to the organisers and now to you fans that I won’t play this time in Abu Dhabi.”

Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic have also withdrawn from the tournament, which is held from Dec. 28-30.

Serena Williams will return to tennis in Abu Dhabi next week, almost four

months after giving birth. The American, 36, will play world

number seven Jelena Ostapenko in an exhibition match on 30 December during the Mubadala World Tennis

Championship. Williams said she was “delighted to be returning to the court”.

She gave birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian in September.

Former world number one Williams has not played since winning the Australian Open in January. Coach Patrick Mouratoglou said in November

that no decision had been made over whether Williams

would play in the season’s first Grand Slam.

Australian Open director Craig Tilley has said Williams is “very likely” to defend her title at the 2018 tournament. (BBC)

Marquez would win titlesLondon

Marc Marquez would have won the 2017

MotoGP title even if he was riding for Ducati, according to Max Biaggi.

Honda rider Marquez saw off a stern challenge from Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso

this season to claim a fourth premier class title in only his fifth season at the top level of grand prix motorcycle racing.

Biaggi believes that Marquez would have been able to win the title even had been riding for the Italian manufacturer, as MotoGP’s top marques are now so close to each other.

“Nowadays the top three or four riders are split by very few tenths, so I think the bikes are pretty even,” Biaggi recently told Motosprint.

“Therefore, I think that if you took the world champion and put him on another bike, he would still win. So, Marquez would surely win also with a Ducati.

“How can you not be impressed by what Marquez does on the bike? The way he manages it when he makes it skid, it leaves you speechless, or when he nearly crashes but saves it.

“It’s not just luck; it’s his ability to manage the bike. He does things only he can do.”

At 24, the Spaniard became the youngest rider to achieve win four top-class titles, beating Valentino Rossi - who took his fourth 500cc/MotoGP crown at age 25 - by a year. (autosport)

I have to pursue

my goals: Landa

London

Movistar have yet to confirm the full race programmes

of their triumvirate of team leaders, but Mikel Landa has listed the Tour de France and Vuelta a España among his aims in 2018 and said that the time has come to pursue his own objectives.

Landa has left Team Sky to join Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde at Movistar for 2018, and it remains to be seen how they will dovetail their interests over the course of the season, particularly at the Tour, where all three riders could feature in Movistar’s eight-man

line-up. After sacrificing his own chances in the Grand Tours for those of his leaders during his stints at Astana and Team Sky, the 28-year-old Landa is eager to seize any opportunities that arise at his new team.

“That time as a domestique is behind me,” Landa told AS. “They stopped me at both Astana and Sky when I had the legs to win. If they tell me to stop again, I will not. I have to pursue my goals.”

Landa insisted, however, that there would be no problems of coexistence with the established leaders Quintana and Valverde. (cyclingnews)

Man City’s forwards are hungry for more goals

London

Vincent Kompany claims all of Manchester City’s attacking players have developed

Sergio Aguero’s appetite for goals.Aguero struck twice as City moved 13 points

clear at the top of the Premier League, and extended their record run of successive victories to 17, with a 4-0 thrashing of Bournemouth on Saturday.

That double chalked up yet another landmark for Aguero, who became City’s record goalscorer earlier this season, by taking his tally of goals in games at the Etihad Stadium to 101.

But with City also reaching 101 goals in Premier League games in 2017, and 60 for this campaign alone, it is not only the prolific Argentina striker who is delivering.

Most notably Raheem Sterling is enjoying the season of his career, with another strike against the Cherries lifting his total for the campaign to 16 in all competitions.

City captain Kompany said: “These guys are just hungry for more. ‘Kun’ has always been inclined that way but I think everybody else now up front has a feeling of scoring goals, what it means to be the main man. It is something that doesn’t go away.

“Everyone is working hard in training, you can tell, to improve whatever they can to score more goals. That helps the team ultimately. We are in a good position with a lot of guys that want to do well.” (eurosport)

Leicester

Manchester United will spend Christmas an eye-watering 13

points behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City after Harry Maguire secured Leicester a draw with a last-gasp goal.

Already reeling from their shock midweek Carabao Cup exit at Bristol City, the need for Jose Mourinho’s men to get back to winning ways was heightened by Pep Guardiola’s team racking up a 17th successive league win earlier in the day.

Juan Mata’s brace looked to have done just that as United responded to Jamie Vardy’s 50th Premier League goal, only for Maguire to strike at the death as 10-man Leicester secured a 2-2 draw.

It was a remarkable end to an entertaining encounter that United started brightly, only for the Foxes to catch them cold on the break as Vardy became the club’s first player to reach a half-century of Premier League goals.

Mata coolly drew United level and put them ahead with a second-half free-kick that the visitors threatened to add to, with Jesse Lingard hitting the post and Marcus Rashford seeing a penalty claim ignored as substitute Daniel Amartey saw red for two bookings in quick succession.

But United would receive a gut punch at the start of a run of four matches in 10 days as Maguire ghosted in to snatch a point.

Chris Smalling was limping as the Foxes levelled proceedings at the end of a night that started with the United defender powering a header just over.

Kasper Schmeichel did well to tip over a deflected Lingard attempt and then denied stand-in captain Paul Pogba, with Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial also attempting to find the opener.

Leicester were creating little early on and pinning their hopes on catching United on the break.

It was a simple plan that bore fruit in the 27th minute as Wilfred Ndidi turned defence into attack by aiming a superb -- if hopeful -- volleyed effort up the field to send Riyad Mahrez scampering.

The Algerian had City’s first attempt on target shortly before and this time refrained from shooting, holding up the ball smartly to shake off Smalling’s attention and playing in the overlapping Vardy to fire home.

Phil Jones was out of position for the England striker’s milestone goal, which was swiftly followed by the King Power Stadium faithful chanting, “Just like Leicester, your city is blue.” (espn.in)
