Dear Friends,

My May Ramble -

The bright sunny spring weather over the Easter holidays is

definitely beckoning me to get outside and enjoy the garden and country-

side around. Every year that miracle of spring is amazing when the trees

burst again into leaf and flower after the dark days of winter and the birds

sing in chorus to defend their territories.

‘Butterfly Conservation’ have sent me some information (page18) about

how the weather has affected butterflies and I don’t see many bees on the

fruit blossom this year. So we could all be more butterfly and bee friendly

and give them a bit of help in our gardens - they are currently needing

some help.

Also I see that the spring is getting Dennis out bird-watching on the

marshes (page 4) with anyone who would like to join him.

As usual in May, I like to remind people about Christian Aid Week

(page 9) which is 11th—17th May when local volunteers will be calling

door to door in the villages to ask for your donation for the work of

Christian Aid.

Christian Aid says: ‘It is an agency of churches in Britain and Ireland that

works around the world with those in need. They work with anyone who

needs help, regardless of faith or nationality. Supporting work that

empowers individuals and communities and fighting injustice and

inequality. It has an integrated approach to poverty eradication – working

on humanitarian relief, long-term development, specific advocacy issues

and campaigns for change and influence. War tears lives apart and for a

growing number of people across the world, the horror of war is part of

daily life. You can help put them back together in Christian Aid Week and

give people a future without fear.

The good news is that individuals, communities and churches can make a

real difference this Christian Aid Week. Last year 20,000 churches across

the country helped raise £12m during Christian Aid Week. Thanks to your

efforts and generosity, many more people can look forward to a future free

from poverty and fear.’

Last year in Burham and Wouldham we raised over £1100!

Hope you can enjoy the great outdoors over the Spring Holidays.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

OLDFIELD DRIVE ROUNDABOUT – The Parish Council would like

to thank County Councillor Peter Homewood for approving the KCC

grant for the new planting scheme on the roundabout. This has certainly

enhanced the area here. The Parish Council would like to remind some

residents that this is a roundabout and the Highway Code must be

followed when using this at all times. Most drivers are very sensible but it

has been brought to our attention that some drivers are approaching this

roundabout at a speed that is over the speed limit. For those drivers, we

would like to remind you that this is a residential area where children are

out and about playing so PLEASE SLOW DOWN. If residents see any

vehicles driving at speed here or the wrong round the roundabout, please

either report to the Police directly or to the Parish Council. Your call

would remain confidential.

DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING – We are organising free defibrillator

training in the Village Hall. If you have not done so already, please put

forward your name to the Parish Clerk if you are interested. Thank you to

Cllr Richard Stone for installing the new defibrillator cabinet next to the

village shop. The cabinet does have a code to open it which the

ambulance service will pass onto anyone calling 999 in an emergency

situation.

BUS SHELTER – Due to recent the vandalism here, the Parish Council

is currently seeking quotes to tidy the shelter up and make some repairs.

RECREATION GROUND CAR PARK – It was disappointing to note

the lack of residents who turned up to help with the pot hole filling in the

car park last month but a big thank you to those residents who gave up a

hour or two on a Saturday morning to help out; Keith Churcher, Fred

Callow and Chloe Adams along with Parish Councillors Richard Stone,

Ken Savage, Dave Adams and James Gore. NEW AND OLD VILLAGE HALL – A new ‘Fundraising Sub-

Committee’ is being set up with interested residents to look at fundraising

for the new village hall. Residents are welcome to attend their meetings.

Watch the parish notice boards or website for meeting date information.

The Parish Council is looking for volunteers to become Trustees on the

existing Village Hall. This would greatly assist with the success of any

Village, please contact the Clerk who is currently collating a list of any

unanswered questions on behalf of the village which she will pass onto

Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.

DOG FOULING – It was reported at the last Parish Meeting that there is

problem in the High Street with dog fouling. At the request of residents,

the Council is looking into having stencils put on pavements in the High

Street to remind dog owners to be responsible. We have also received

reports of dog bags being thrown into the gardens that back onto the

recreation ground. Please be considerate to your fellow residents and use

the dog bins provided in the village at all times.

As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about Wouldham please

email, write or telephone the Clerk. Everyone is welcome to attend our

next Parish Council meeting on Tuesday 6th May in Wouldham Village

Hall, which will start at the slightly earlier time of 7pm as this is the

THE BUTTERFLY FIGHTBACK BEGINS

A study by the UK Butterfly

Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS) has

revealed that UK butterflies rallied

last summer but their numbers

were still below average as this

followed their worst year on

record. Washout 2012 took a toll

on butterflies with populations of

rare species such as Duke of

Burgundy becoming locally

extinct.

Dr Tom Brereton, Head of

Monitoring at Butterfly

Conservation, said: “The recovery

of butterflies in 2013 was highly

welcome but there is still a long

way to go before butterflies return

to former glories. “Our ongoing

monitoring efforts will be vital in assessing whether we are on track to

reverse butterfly declines and rebuild a healthy countryside.” UKBMS

has run since 1976 and involves thousands of volunteers collecting data

every week throughout the summer from more than 1,000 sites across the

UK.

Some 46 out of the 56 species studied in 2013 recorded an annual

increase compared to 2012. Common species such as the Small, Large

and Green-veined White, all of which had their worst year on record in

2012 bounced back to above average numbers in 2013 with all three

increasing by more than 100%. Garden favourite the Small Tortoiseshell

also rallied after years of decline. The butterfly was up by more than

200% on 2012 as last year’s warm summer saw it record its best year for

a decade. The warm weather saw a huge influx of some migrants with

numbers of Clouded Yellow butterflies from the Continent up by 4,373

sightings from 2012.

Page 21: Burham & wouldham parish magazine may 14

19

The very cold spring of 2013 saw some of our most threatened habitat

specialists suffer. The endangered Pearl-bordered Fritillary was down

22% compared to 2012, whilst Grizzled Skipper numbers fell by 45% to a

series low. Several rare species

revived following 2012 with the

Lulworth Skipper up by 162% and

the critically endangered High

Brown Fritillary up 133% as both

responded to conservation work.

Many UK species need a warm

spring and summer this year to give

them the best chance of sustaining a

recovery.

CEH butterfly ecologist Dr Marc

Botham explains that annual

changes to butterfly numbers are

largely associated with the weather.

However, the data shows that a

number of species have been significantly declining over the last years.

This highlights the

importance of maintaining

long-term habitats and

monitoring.
