Dear Friends,

The Magazine wishes you a happy, healthy and successful

New Year.

Spirits can feel a bit low over the cold, wet, dark days of winter but

we can find plenty of activities inside the magazine for getting

together with others and keeping spirits up. It’s traditionally a time of

course for new resolutions so its a good time to make plans for the

spring and summer. Lovely plans can be made for summers holidays

and Sue (page 19) helps us to think about planning the garden for

spring and summer. It’s certainly lovely to think of spring arriving.

Of course this is a landmark year for Burham and Wouldham villages

and the valley. (page 8 ) The first residents will start to move into

Peters Village and new routes will open to us when the new road link

and Medway bridge open. This Magazine of course will be printing

more copies and so I shall be on the look out for people who will

deliver the Magazine and also welcome the new residents to the

community.

It’s exciting to see the plans proposed for the new school in

Wouldham. I can see that a purpose-built, modern building would

bring so many opportunities for the children’s education and of

course increase the intake of pupils. (page 4) I know that the

curriculum at the schools is very exciting and the children are having

lots of fun learning. I saw that for myself the other day when I went

into Burham School and saw what the children were doing. It’s great

to see. (page 11)

We’ll take the year month by month with the Magazine. I’m thinking

that 2016 is a year of change. Mary Davis

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School

2016 has started in earnest and we have enjoyed an active January with

many exciting challenges. Our current themes are ‘Chinatown’ for our

juniors which has been very popular and has seen the development of

greater understanding of a different culture along with a little

introduction to the Chinese language! We will be ending the term with a

Chinese New Year celebration and possibly a chopstick competition!

The younger children have been ‘On the Farm’ with their learning about

animals and where our food comes from. They have enjoyed trips to the

Rare Breeds Centre near Ashford as well as visits from different ‘animal’

related people.

We hope you have seen the proposed designs for our new school building

to be located just off Hall Road. If not, these are available on the school

website. It looks very exciting and we are hoping that we will be able to

progress to a formal planning application in the not too distant future.

The school team are very excited at the prospect of having purpose built,

modern facilities to help improve what we do even more! The School

Parliament had a good discussion around the plans and made some very

good suggestions as well as raising important questions. We appreciate

that there are several uncertainties still to be worked through and we are

working in partnership with the local authority and other groups to make

sure that these are considered appropriately. The statutory notice for the

expansion of the school, subject to relocation approval, was published on

the 8th January The complete proposal is available on the KCC website at

www.kent.gov.uk/schoolconsultations. Any person may send in a

response supporting, objecting or commenting on the proposals to Jared

Nehra, Area Education Officer by email to

[email protected]. The closing date for objections and

comments is 5 February 2016.

PETERS VILLAGE COUNTDOWN FOR 2016 – MEDWAY IS BRIDGED AGAIN AFTER A GAP OF SOME 70 YEARS

Peters Village developer Trenport has confirmed that it will step back from

onsite construction there later this year, as planned, and a little over two

years since work began on the £50million project.

This year will also mark the return of a crossing at Wouldham: the

Medway’s banks were temporarily linked at that point by a Bailey Bridge

during World War II.

“Major infrastructure works on Peters Village by ourselves and our onsite

contactor BAM Nuttall will have been completed by late summer this year

and, without tempting providence at the 11th hour, have gone smoothly and

to schedule,” said Trenport Director Chris Hall. But he added that

remaining work this year did include some of the biggest elements in the

creation of the new 1,000-home community on the River Medway’s east

bank near Wouldham.

Largest of these is the all-new road bridge over the river – grander and

more permanent than the wartime structure. It is due to open to traffic in

late August and bears a new carriageway, linking with the Snodland-

Halling roundabout of the A228 west of the river. continued .....

Page 11: Burham & wouldham parish magazine feb 16

9

continued ....

“But this route also depends on completion of a new rail bridge spanning

the north-south rail line between the river and the A228, one of the last

elements able to be put in place.

Trenport’s project manager Paul Morris explained: “There is an ageing

brick and steel bridge over the railway, built simply for access when the

old cement industry was active, but inadequate for a modern day road link

carrying the sort of volumes needed here. “However, with the train

timetable taking priority, ‘windows’ of opportunity for building a

replacement were few, but BAM Nuttall now has an agreed programme

with Network Rail and has started building embankments and boring

holes for piled foundations needed to bear the new rail bridge.

“Work should then be completed at around the same time as the Medway

crossing and allow demolition of the old bridge over the railway. Both

new bridges will include footways and cycleways.”

He added that another major job in hand is completion of the east bank

riverside walkway: “It will be a showpiece landmark for the entire

development, with timber and composite riverbank cladding and block

paviors for the walkway/cycleway. A crane is needed to manoeuvre the

cladding into place, so the walkway surfacing itself has to come after that

element is completed or risk damage from the crane’s movements.

All work on services – water, gas, electricity and telecomms – are nearly

complete and the footpaths programme in Court Road is a priority, due to

finish soon.”

Looking ahead, Chris Hall said: “We are delighted that our first house-

builder, Bellway, is now onsite and due to start construction this month.

“We anticipate announcements soon also for other housebuilders taking

up the further phases on what we believe is perceived as a premium

development, offering excellent jobs and communications potential for

residents and a high quality of life, with its own village centre and shops,

school, playing fields and other recreation facilities.

“The new Medway crossing is, of course, key to its success, offering easy

access to the Medway’s west bank and on to London and other important

destinations via rail and road.

“When completed, around 2024, Peters Village will mark a dramatic

transformation and improvement of a derelict eyesore, a brown field site

that once housed the former Peters Lime and Cement Works.”

BURHAM C of E

PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY,

In the absence this month of our usual report, I put my reporter’s hat on to

find out about what pupils are doing at Burham School. I was able to make

a brief tour and get some interviews in between all the activities.

Of course this winter so far has been relatively warm and it is pointed out

to me that many of the children have never experienced snow. The

reception class have been wishing for a white Christmas and beyond but

there is still no snow to play in. In the meantime though they are really

enjoying some ‘wintery’ stories and learning about Iceland. Also I found

myself amongst some cheery snowmen mobiles that they’ve made which

definitely add to the ‘chilly’ theme in the classroom.

I sense the excitement of Year 1 and 2. They have been exploring the

world. In Year 1, I find myself discovering and marvelling again at ‘The

7 Wonders of World’ in the work that the children have done. Year 2

children have been off to the USA in their studies. Here to be seen is work

on the great symbols of America: the Statue of Liberty and of course

Uncle Sam. At the moment they are finding out about the Apache tribe

Indians and part of this has been having lots of fun making Indian tepees

on the field.

Year 3 were excitedly writing descriptions using all the senses of familiar

places for others to work out where they are. I see it as learning disguised

as a game! Also I was impressed by their comparing and contrasting a

written passage of Harry Potter with a clip from that part of the film.

Clever stuff!

It is explained to me that each year group plan and run daily worship at

assembly. Year 4/5 have been researching the inspirational life and work

of Mary Seacole which they intend to use at their worship time.

The Year 6 classroom is sporting some beautiful artwork of Stone Age

cave paintings as part of their Stone Age studies. I’m also told about the

science lessons and learning about electricity and how light bulbs work,

French conversation sessions (so we could exchange some formal greet-

ings) and some fun in maths ‘rounding’ figures. I was certainly impressed

by their ‘Enterprise’ in which they must come up with ways of raising

money to fund their end of year theatre trip to see Lion King.

Well, thank you very much for having me. I came away thinking that it is

exciting and fun being at school. Mary Davis

Recycling: Please remember to squash up your cardboard recycling,

so that more can be placed in the container. The Parish is now

much in as possible and to keep the number of uplifts to a minimum. The Parish Office has a small quantity of kitchen caddies available for

food waste. These are free of charge. They come complete with 5 liners

(further liners will need to be purchased). The Caddies are available from

February in Your Garden

Blossom by Blossom, the Spring begins

As the promise of Spring being just around the corner

brings the hope of another successful year in the garden, it

is likely that spring bulbs are starting to put on their show.

The unusually mild weather in December has encouraged

some early growth, and the following cold snap may have

had an affected those early flowers, but hopefully it will correct the

seasons for the remainder of the year. The wet weather may have also

taken its toll on bulbs so if you have gaps where you should have flowers

then perhaps infill with a few spring bedding plants such as Bellis or

Primroses. Now is also the time to be potting up or planting out Allium

and Lily bulbs for early summer colour.

By now the Hellebores are also in full bloom, and their leaves can be cut

back to show them off to their full potential, and winter pansies can be

dead-headed to promote a fresh flush of flowers.

To keep the garden tidy for the forthcoming season, and if the weather

allows, then now is the time to prune winter flowering heathers by

removing the old flowers – a quick trim over with the shears should

suffice, and also removing old growth from ornamental grasses ready for

the new growth to emerge. Shrubs such as Cornus, Willow (Salix) and

Winter Jasmine can also be cut back to allow fresh growth ready for next

winters display. Hardy Fuschia can also be cut back to two or three buds

from the base to allow for new season growth.

In the vegetable garden it’s time to plant out onion sets, get early potatoes

chitting, and prune back autumn fruiting raspberries. Bare root fruit trees

and canes will also be available, and should be planted immediately so

make sure you have your spot ready for them to go straight in.

Other things to be doing this month:

Mulch fruit trees

Review seed supplies for summer annuals, and stock up

accordingly – there are often new varieties available

Wash empty pots so they’re clean & ready for new plants

Check over your shed and water butts for any damage to pipes &

guttering etc. & repair where necessary. If the weather is fine and

dry you can also spruce up the shed with a fresh coat of paint.

Keep bird feeders topped up, & hang fat balls in quieter locations

WINCHESTER HOUSE, WOULDHAM We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, it was very busy

here at Winchester House with lots of shows and festivities!

Residents were delighted when children from both Burham

Church of England Primary School and also Wouldham All Saints Primary School

came to sing carols. After their performances, the children spent time chatting with

residents and everyone enjoyed refreshments.

Our annual carol service was a truly amazing event thanks to Rev. Mike Hayes

and the All Saints Church Choir and also our wonderful guests, the Mayor and

Mayoress of Tonbridge and Malling, Owen and Christine Baldock who joined in

with the carol singing. This year’s pantomime Beauty and the Beast was performed

by Tickled Pink Productions, it was a huge success with families and friends

joining residents for fun and laughter, made all the more special by all the children

that attended! We would like to thank Gwen and Dennis Worcester and all the

volunteers for all their help and support throughout the past year and we look

forward to more exciting projects and events planned for the coming year.

On behalf of Sue Simmonds and all the residents and staff at Winchester House,

we would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year!
