SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Public Act #13 of 1875 created the Bureau of Agriculture, Mines, and Statistics with the defined duties of examining the agriculture, soils, mines, and the State’s manufacturing capacity. The commissioner was to report quarterly to the governor on his progress and was to “…use every means to attract capitol and incite immigration to this State.” The record group contains only one volume that details, county-by-county, the manufacturing capacity of the State, giving the name of each manufacturer, when the company was formed, capital invested, employment, wages, annual production value, and type of product. The quarterly reports to the governor cover the years 1875 through 1881 and give the operational expenditures of the bureau by quarter. It is interesting to note that the salary of the commissioner during this time period was $750.00 quarterly. The geologic soil and ore samples were analyzed by Professor J. B. Britton of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and are recorded by mine and county, giving the composition of the ore and the percentages of its component parts.
