Burcham Beacon
Back to the Beacon
We are excited to get back to the monthly publication of our Burcham
Beacon. This newsletter provides details on the upcoming events and
programs that will be offered throughout the month. We encourage you
to dive in and check out all the new programs as we continue to reopen
our community in a safe manner.
If you have any questions about the programs offered or would like to
suggest a program, please contact the Recreation Office at
(517) 827-1061.
Our First Outing We were thrilled to offer our first outing on the bus again! It was a
lovely day for a scenic drive and checking out
the local sights.
We are eager to offer more outings in a safe
manner as we continue to move forward. See
page 8 for upcoming outing opportunities. At
this time, social distancing is required on the
bus which does limit the capacity. Once capaci-
ty is filled, we will have a waiting list to help
us determine future outings.
Additionally, a signed Liability Waiver is re-
quired to attend outings. See page 8 for contact
information to obtain these forms. Note: if
you have already signed a Liability Waiver and
we have it on file, you do not need to sign another one.

Welcome back Your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back To that same old place that you laughed about
Well, the names have all changed
Since you hung around But those dreams have remained
And they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead you Back here where we need you?
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back Welcome back, welcome back
~ Song by John Sebastian
Welcome Back to the Burcham Beacon! The song lyrics above keep playing in my mind as we continue our return to nor-malcy. This month, we will have our first “event” – one of our infamous BBQs under the comfy shade and breeze of our carports. We are eager to get back to our lifestyle and entertainment, and we know we can do it well and safely.
“Step back in perspective, open your heart and welcome transition into a new phase of life.”
~ Linda Rawson Although challenges continue, we remain positive and confident in our approach to reopen our community and reengage all, as we are accustomed to, the Bur-cham Way! Our hearts are open, and we are ready for this new phase of life in our community. We look forward to seeing many of you at the end of this month, enjoying Chef’s amazing food, Kimber’s excellent entertainment and having some fun in the sun! This aspect of our lives we have all missed so dearly and we are all ready to
WELCOME it BACK!

How Seniors Can Protect Themselves from Identity Theft Identity theft occurs when a criminal gets his hands on your personal identifying information without your con-sent. Unfortunately, this personal information can be found in countless places – from your Social Security card to your driver's license to the labels on your prescription bottles. And according to the Federal Trade Commission, seniors may be especially vulnerable. Although the Target data breach received much media attention due to its massive scale, identity theft remains a fairly commonplace occur-rence. In fact, according to Javelin Strategy & Research studies, an identity theft occurs once every three seconds.
Why are seniors targeted? There are several reasons why seniors are often targeted specifically in identity theft scams. For one, older Americans tend to have more money saved up than younger adults who are just starting out, making them espe-cially lucrative targets for identity thieves. Seniors are also more likely to be staying in hospitals or nursing homes, where their personal information passes through the hands of many different people on a regular basis. Furthermore, older adults may be more trusting and less likely to suspect malicious intent when they receive unusual emails or phone calls. Many seniors already depend on relatives, friends, neighbors and even strangers for caregiving and support, so they may not be suspicious of unsolicited help or other offers that come their way. Finally, seniors may also be less likely to report identity theft once they suspect it has occurred. They may be worried that if they report identity theft, family members will assume that they are no longer capable of living independently and handling their finances on their own.
How seniors can protect themselves from ID theft Although there is no way to completely prevent identity theft, seniors can take steps to lower their risks of be-coming victims. For one, older adults should be sure they operate safely online. Phishing attacks often come in the form of emails, appearing to be from a business or other legitimate source. They may trick victims into supplying their personal information or clicking on a link by saying things like, “Your account is about to be canceled!” or “You have won a large cash prize.” Seniors should remember that legitimate businesses will not ask for person-al information through an unsecure source, like an email. Older Americans who use social media sites like Facebook should avoid sharing certain types of personal infor-mation in their profiles, such as exact dates of birth. Some thieves have used details like these to forge birth cer-tificates and create false identities. Offline, seniors can increase their physical security against ID theft by keeping close tabs on important docu-ments, like bank statements and benefits statements.
Professional help is widely available Because many older adults have reached a point of financial stability in their lives, they may be less likely than younger adults to monitor their bank accounts or credit reports on a regular basis. Fortunately, identity theft pro-tection services can be extremely helpful in these areas. Identity theft is most easily resolved when detected ear-ly, so vigilance is the key to effective identity theft protection for anyone – including seniors. Pet Adoptions
Last month, some of the residents were able
to adopt a new furry friend. This opportunity
was made possible through a generous grant
from the Michigan Long Term Care Ombuds-
man Program Companion Pet Adoption Pro-
ject. We are thrilled to provide this opportuni-
ty and have developed the Magic Paws Clinic
to help maintain them and provide check-ups
on a quarterly basis. Residents really enjoyed
interacting with the pets and getting to name
them! Here are a few pictures.

Monthly Wellness Focus:
Spiritual Wellness is related to your values and beliefs that help you find meaning and purpose in your life. Spiritual Wellness may come from activities such as volunteering, self-reflection, meditation, prayer or spending time in nature. Signs of strong spiritual health include having clear values, a sense of self-
confidence and a feeling of inner peace. To improve your spiritual health, it can help to create a quiet space for solitude and contemplation or a place of curiosity and
playfulness. Maintaining a playful, curious attitude can help you find experiences that offer hope, purpose and meaning.

From Down the Hill . . . By Sylvia Rundquist, Clusters Board of Directors
‘NO GATHERINGS’ has been a tough mandate for the Clusters residents to follow this past year. Prior to the pandemic, many residents frequently attended programs and activities at the main building. When the pandemic caused the Community to close to visitors, residents found themselves with time on their hands and no planned activities they could attend.
However, as of April, they have begun to gather under the Sycamore tree for their weekly coffees, masked and social distancing, once again enjoying one of the many benefits of this Community: the opportunity to know people from many different locales.
The vacationing residents have returned. We are happy to announce we have five new families who have become residents during the past year.

We want to take this time to honor and remember those we have loved who passed away during the month of March and April. We express our sincere thoughts and prayers
to their families and friends.
