Presidents Message Colombo Club Auxiliary Presidents MessageFratelli,

October is Italian American Heritage Month. It is a time to rediscover the importance of the traditions that our charter members wanted to share. It is a time to remember who we are and where we came from. My grandfather, Pietro Puppione, was born in Torino, the industrial capital of Italy. He traveled to America with my Nana, my dad, and my aunt in the early 1900s. He and 33 other Piemontese paesani gathered at the Lovisone residence on Pleasant Valley Road and discussed forming an Italian social club. That is how the Colombo Club started. In celebration of Italian Heritage Month, visit the Isabella/Ed Basso Room and take a walk down memory lane in our history room. I encourage you also to connect with your own personal Italian heritage.

Dinners have always been the center of the Clubs gatherings, and pasta has always been on the menu. Sophia Loren once said, Tutto quello che vedete lo devo alla pasta. (Everything you see I owe to pasta.) This month we owe our pasta menu to head cook John Tandys wife, Anna. The pasta for our birthday dinners is Pasta a la Anna. It is a very special dish that pairs well with our Italian roast beef dinners. Anna Tandy is also the artist who painted the mural in the rear of the dining room. Grazie Mille, Anna, both for your art of cooking and for your painting.

Columbus Day, October 9, is the date of our annual golf tournament and dinner. If you were not able to get into the tournament but would like to celebrate Columbus Day at the Club, call the Club and make a reservation for the ravioli and prime rib dinner. The cost for the dinner is only $30. All proceeds for the tournament, dinner, and raffle benefit our scholarship fund.

October is also a special month for our children and playful adults at our Halloween family dinner and costume contest on Saturday October 28. The menu is pasta and roast chicken. Join us for a night that is always filled with fun and laughter.

Plan on voting at the Club next month at one of the three birthday dinners, the family dinner, or the assembly dinner. We are offering these five different times in November for you to cast your vote for Club officers and board members in an effort to be more inclusive. Look for our voting booth in our Club Room from 5 pm to 7 pm at each of the birthday dinners, from 4 pm to 6 pm at the family dinner, and from 2 pm to 7 pm on the day of the assembly meeting. Read about each of the candidates in the Heritage section of next months newsletter. Mark your calendar to attend the dinner and Assembly Meeting on Tuesday, November 21, at 7 pm. We welcome your ideas and input about running the Club.

A fun way to celebrate Italian Heritage month is to watch the free San Francisco Columbus Day Parade. The parade begins at 12:30 pm on Sunday, October 8, at the corner of Jefferson and Stockton Streets and ends at Washington Square Park. The parade includes handcrafted floats and local high school marching bands. You will find some great wine and food deals at restaurants along the parade route in North Beach.

On September 5th the CCA had a lovely reception in the Isabella Room for a group from Isola delle Femmine, Sicily sister city to Pittsburg, California. Several of the hosts along with about 20 visitors arrived after touring San Francisco, and North Bay. Italian club presidents and representatives took a few minutes to tell about their clubs. The Mayor Stefano Bologna, gave a brief talk and thanked everyone for the hospitality and presented Colombo Club President Rich Puppione with a lovely ceramic plate and a copy of the marriage certificate of Joe DeMaggios parents. These will be displayed in the Isabella Room. Following toasts and treats the guests were given a tour of the Colombo Club building. Thanks to the officers, board and CC members who made this evening possible.

The Auxiliary sends its thanks to Jean Inferrera and Geri Tochet for chairing our tasty Back To School dinner. October is here and were closing in on the end of an unusual year for the CCA. Our meeting on Oct. 18th will include nominations for officers and board. As I said in my previous letter please check to see if you qualify to run for an office all positions for officers are open and some board positions. You also need to check if you qualify to vote at our November meeting. Think seriously about running for an office - IF YOU MEET THE REQUIREMENTS we need members willing to work for the Auxiliary.

Keep an eye out for further information for an event on Sat. Nov. 4th. We will be having a HOLIDAY HOME-MADE BAKE SALE, Luncheon of salad, raviolis and dessert, with raffle and baskets to buy. Start baking your favorite cookies, cakes, breads, etc. to help make someones holidays special.

As I wrote before, Dec. 2nd will be the CCAs 80th anniversary and I would love to hear from any founders families or Past Presidents families with memories or pictures. My email address is below.
