SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Make & Do Activity Kit

The much loved Royal Doulton Bunnykins collection began in 1934 with the drawings of Barbara Vernon, a young nun. Barbara’s drawings were inspired by her idyllic childhood and feature the fun and innocent adventures of a family of eight bunnies in the village of Little Twitching. Her father was Cuthbert Bailey, the manager of the Royal Doulton factory, and he saw the potential for his daughter’s drawings as a range of nurseryware.

The success of Bunnykins saw the range expand into light-hearted Bunnykins figurines of which the Powerhouse Museum has a wonderful collection. Today, 80 years later, Bunnykins continues to delight the young at heart the world over.

The story of Bunnykins

Australian themed Bunnykins at the Powerhouse Museum

Royal Doulton have so far released over 300 different Bunnykins figures in countries around the world, with Australia being a very enthusiastic market.

The first figure with an Australian theme was the 1984 ‘Olympic Bunnykins’ in green-and-gold produced exclusively for Australian distribution. It was also the first example of Bunnykins to enter The Powerhouse Museum’s Collection. It was followed by ‘Australian Bunnykins’, another sport-loving rabbit in a green-and-gold sport uniform, launched in 1987 in anticipation of Australia’s bicentenary in 1988. ‘Surfer Bunnykins’ and ‘Eureka Bunnykins’ were added in the 1990s - examples of these were part of a large collection of Bunnykins figurines donated to the Powerhouse Museum by the Sydney collector Robert Walmsley. Inspired by an early Bunnykins porridge bowl, a treasured memento of his childhood, Walmsley started building his Bunnykins collection in the mid 1970s.

Designed in Australia to commemorate the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games, the ‘Bunnykins games’ set was the next design with an Australian theme and it consisted of five ‘sporty’ Bunnykins depicted as playing sports characteristic of five continents: soccer (Europe), basketball (USA), running (Africa), swimming ( Australia) and gymnastics (Asia). The limited edition ‘Federation Bunnykins’ figure soon followed, and during the next decade new figures were added such as ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘Digger Bunnykins,’ ‘Captain Cook Bunnykins’, ‘Centenary Scout Bunnykins’, ‘Surf Lifesaver Bunnykins’ and ‘Flying Doctor Bunnykins’.

‘Victa Bunnykins’, ‘Bush Fire Fighter Bunnykins’, ‘Howzat Bunnykins’, ‘Billycart Bunnykins’, ‘G’Day Mate Tableau’ , ‘Outdoor Dunny Bunnykins’, and ‘Queensland SES Bunnykins’ are recent Australian additions to the series. Like many of the figurines that preceded them, these were designed in Australia by Wendy Boyce-Davies.
