I’m sure most of you already know the results of the Special Election just completed October 20th. This was a significant election in that we saw a 10% turnover of our Board of Directors. There were 61 ballots cast. That’s nearly an 80% voter turnout !! I want to

thank and congratulate the voting body of the Reno Rodeo Association for taking part in this important election. WELL DONE !!

The voter turnout and the results of the election indicate to me that our Association is alive and well. We are moving forward into the future all the while being respectful of our heritage. The slate of candidates that the Nominating committee put forth was exceptional. Those of you, who were not successful in this election, please run again in the April election. Congratulations to Lightning Williams (Treasurer) and Directors Doug Nicholson, Michael Buis, Spencer Downie, Michael Efstratis, Ken Minor and Chelsea Sidener-Mitchell.

The month of November brings the Wilderness Circuit Finals in Heber City, UT. The officers and Miss Reno Rodeo, Alex Rayppy, will represent the largest rodeo in the circuit in presenting the Champion Bull Rider with a trophy saddle sponsored by Reno Rodeo.

As the Thanksgiving Holiday comes to a close, the Executive Committee will be headed to Las Vegas for the PRCA

Convention and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. This will definitely be a working trip as there are a number of contracts that need to be negotiated and signed. I have charged the Executive Committee to actively participate in the convention meetings and return with ideas to improve our rodeo. Additionally, we will be working to improve relations with the

PRCA, other PRCA rodeos and marketing the Reno Rodeo with a booth at Cowboy Christmas.

Reno Rodeo is alive and well. It’s not broken – and doesn’t need fixing. However, I am proud to tell

you the Officers, Executive Committee, Directors, Members and Wranglers, along with our staff are working together to fulfill the goals established in our Strategic Plan; to distinguish Reno Rodeo as the best rodeo in the world.

I hope to see everyone on November 18th, at the Atlantis Hotel and Casino for the Reno Rodeo Association Holiday Dinner.

The Marketing/Advertising Committee is conducting a fall “housecleaning” and updating of Reno Rodeo’s website. To ensure that we catch all areas needing updating, if you encounter any errors, outdated information, or corrections needed, please contact Teresa Lindsey at (775) 722-7567 or [email protected] with your suggestions.

Reno Rodeo is alive and well.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

George CombsGeneral Manager

I hope every one of you have been enjoying the luncheons this year. It is a challenge to keep the event fun, fresh and worthwhile. If you have any suggestions, please drop us a note. Remember this month of November is a dinner, not lunch, to be held on the 18th at 6:00. Another change to keep it fresh. If you were at the last luncheon you know the results of the October

elections. Most of you may be aware of the new directors by now; I hope you will embrace them and get to know them well!! We are excited about new blood bringing new ideas and out of the box, ‘not the norm’ way of thinking.

If you haven’t been by the office lately, please come and inspect the changes here. My wife has been painting and sewing again. Plus we have been tearing cabinets out and moving safes around. All this so we can add an office in the

back along with a new face coming very soon. Be on the lookout.

The first of this month will be the circuit finals in Heber City Utah. We will be representing Reno Rodeo plus sponsoring a saddle for the bull riding Champion. This is a great event to be noticed at because we are the largest rodeo in the Wilderness Circuit and need to show our leadership. Of course the Thanksgiving weekend will see myself and Shannon heading down the road to Las Vegas for the NFR. Many of you may not be aware, that in addition to the hospitality suite Reno Rodeo hosts at the South Point hotel, this year we have been invited to join in at the convention center. We will have a vendor booth space set up in the Cowboy Way row to promote and spread the word about Reno Rodeo; our past, present and future.

The budget is completed, new directors elected and the Heber City trip a success. The NFR flights and hotels booked, meetings to schedule all done. All that seems to be left:

“We wish all of you a very wonderful Thanksgiving!!”

I AM THE RENO RODEO - DANIEL BYBEE

Mark Sutton

Growing up on a farm in the San Joaquin Valley, Dan Bybee was familiar with the western way of life from an early age. “Two of my uncles owned a 2,000-acre cattle ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and I spent time up there feeding cattle, branding, doctoring, and hunting,” he explained. Dan also spent several summer vacations with his uncles

and many of his cousins on horse pack trips in the high Sierras during his high school years. With so many great childhood experiences and memories, it is easy to understand how Dan came to love the western lifestyle and the sport of rodeo.

In fact, Dan had aspirations of becoming a rancher, but the family sold the ranch while he was at college studying Forestry at Humboldt State. Dan continued his education and received his MBA from Cal State Fullerton. Next, Dan worked at a sawmill in Foresthill, CA for nine years followed by 23 years in Sacramento, as a controller for a local real estate developer.

Despite numerous trips to Reno to watch the rodeo, Dan didn’t move to the area until 2009 when he relocated to be with his fiancée, Donna. They married in October of 2010 and now make their home in South Reno. Once here, Dan learned about how much the rodeo supported the youth of Northern Nevada

and wanted to be involved. “I coached youth football for 22 years and I thought to help disadvantaged children through the Reno Rodeo was the perfect combination of cowboy culture and community involvement,” Dan explained.

Dan’s first personal interaction with the Reno Rodeo came in 2011 when he participated in the Cattle Drive. “It had been on my bucket list for years, and I was thrilled to be a part of it,” Dan advised. He rode into town, got off his horse, and served his first year as a Wrangler working on the Contestant Parking Committee. Since that time, Dan has Co-Chaired the Contestant Parking Committee along with working several years on the Team 355 Committee. He was appointed Chairman of the Team 355 Committee in 2015 and has been continually leading that group with new activities and challenges.

Dan counts the personal interaction with all the contestants as one of his favorite parts of volunteering each year. “I take pride when we hear the contestants state that this is their favorite rodeo because of how well we take care of them.  I also love working with the Foundation and helping make life a little better for so many children,” he said.

Bybee currently works as a controller for Wilson Sporting Goods in Sparks. “We manufacture a variety of pitching machines that are used by high school, college and professional baseball and softball teams. It’s an interesting operation,” Dan claimed.

In his spare time Dan also enjoys visiting family in California, studying ancestry, and writing cowboy poetry. In fact, be looking for one of his poems in the 2017 Reno Rodeo Magazine!

LETTER FROM THE QUEEN

Alex Rayppy Miss Reno Rodeo 2017

With the weather starting to change in the beautiful city of Reno, Nevada so has my Rodeo schedule. Fall is upon us and I couldn’t be happier, it's one of my favorite seasons. Seeing the leaves change and getting a feel for the cooler weather is a breath of fresh air. The month of October has been slow and steady for this Rodeo Queen, but I know it’s always calm before the storm hits. I have been able to focus on school, working towards my Kinesiology degree. Once I graduate, I plan to apply for Physical Therapy School in hopes of becoming a Physical Therapist one day. Coming up with my Rodeo schedule, we have our Nevada Day Parade on October 29th starting at 10:00am. I can’t wait to be a part of this parade supporting the Reno Rodeo with the Rodeo Officers joining me. I’ve been going to the Nevada Day Parade since I was a little girl and I’ve always loved seeing the festivities and dozens of activities that they have at this event. Getting to celebrate the state I was born and raised in on its 77th year in Carson City will be one event I will never forget. I hope to see you all there! Following the Nevada Day Parade I will be packing up my Rodeo Queen closet and heading to Heber City, Utah. It’s going to be a weekend full of athletes, champions, and livestock. The Rodeo starts November 3rd, ending on November 5th, each evening event will start at 7:00pm. This Rodeo is pretty special because someone will get

a chance to call himself the PRCA Wilderness Circuit Rodeo Finals winner. World Champion Kaycee Field and the Wright boys will be competing along the top Wilderness Circuit pro rodeo contestants. I cannot wait to write to you all how my trip went and all the amazing athletes I hopefully get to meet. My goal for this trip is to represent the Reno Rodeo the best I can and promote the sport of Rodeo to inspire someone to eventually want to become a part of this amazing sport. I want the Reno Rodeo to be bigger than ever in the coming 2017 year, so I will be promoting our Rodeo in hopes that we get out of state fans coming to watch our Rodeo for the very first time. I hope everyone reading this is enjoying this fall weather and my next article coming soon will be the conclusion of my Utah adventure and my preparation for the National Finals Rodeo coming up in December.

COUNT DOWN TO 100

The stories for the Count Down to 100 are excerpts from “A History – The First 80 Years” by Guy Clifton.

Gerald Roberts won six championships at the Reno Rodeo between 1948 and 1951 – none of them in his favorite event.

“Saddle bronc riding was my favorite, but I rode all three,” said the 80-year-old from Abilene, KS. “I’d win in all three of them. I was kind of like the Ty Murray of my time.

Roberts, a two-time world all-around champion and member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, did particularly well at the Reno Rodeo, winning the all-around titles in 1948, 1959 and 1951. He also won the bull riding in 1949 and 1951, and the bareback in 1951. His six championships were the second most in the history of the Reno Rodeo, trailing only Casey Tibbs, who won nine.

“It was one of my favorite rodeos to go to and I won a lot of money there,” Roberts said. “They had lots of good bucking horses back in those days. Harry Rowell was the stock contractor. He always had real good stock.”

Roberts cut back his rodeo schedule in the mid-50s for a career as a Hollywood stunt man.

“I doubled for guys like Glenn Ford and Jack Lemon,” he said. “If I hadn’t fooled around with the movie, I would have won the all-around three or four more times. But I don’t regret it. It was a good experience for me.”

Roberts passed away on New Year’s Eve, 2004.

Kudos to Sandi McKee for the recognition of her lifetime service to the Dolan Auto Group.

The Reno Rodeo has been selected as the Rodeo of the Year for Nevada in the Wilderness Circuit. Great job to Scott and the entire Reno Rodeo Association.

On sadder notes, our condolences go out to Director Emeritus Stan Stoll who lost his wife, Doris, after a lengthy illness. Stan has been a fixture in the President's Room for the last several years.

We also lost Annie Britten, the wife of Past President Bob Britten. And long-time Director Emeritus and museum benefactor Ken Dennis. Ken was a member of the association for close to 60 years.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of their families.
