Thanks to the incredible generosity of a large group of individuals and businesses from Tzaneen a Christmas gift bag was donated to each child at the Hope for Life day care centre at Nkowankowa. In addition, an extensive range of supplies, including food and stationery was donated to help the

centre when school kicks off again in the new year. All of the children who will be moving to Grade R in 2014 were given extra books and

stationery to start them off at their new school. Special thanks must go to Spar, BF Distributors

and the team from the Happy Ethan Project, who generously donated stationery, food, soccer balls and two much needed full size bookshelves.

The owner of the school, Ms Rose Mboweni, the teachers and parents of the school extended their sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this Christmas very special for their little ones, who definitely will treasure this year’s Xmas.

One of the most devastating pests ever to hit forestry and Eucalyptus plantation owners in Tzaneen brought widespread damage over a large area, causing losses of millions of rands.

It is called the Blue Gum Chalcid or Gall wasp (Leptocybe invasa) and has already caused indefinite damage to plantations around Tzaneen, Politsi and Magoebaskloof.

The nasty wasp has spread to many countries around the world and was discovered in South Africa in June 2007. Infested plantations was only discovered in 2010.

Seedlings and trees of less than three years appear to be the most severely affected by attack of the wasp, originating from Australia. It is a big threat to the eucalyptus forestry and

biological agents are now released on a wide scale to control the pest.

A parasitic wasp (Selitrichodes neseri) was discovered by prof Stefan Neser of the University of Pretoria in Australia in 2010. This minute wasp was imported into the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) in the UP where a rearing colony was established.

After nearly two years of studies it was released on more than 300 locations across the most highly infested areas in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

Mr Willem Hollestein of Komatiland Plantations said the pests attack the leaves and branches of young Eucalyptus Grandis

(widely grown in SA) and limit the

development of the trees immensely. Chemical pesticides are applied on a limited scale, as there are restrictions on certain products to protect the bee population.

Ms Sonia du Buisson from Research and Development at Merensky said many people and organizations were involved in the release of the parasitic wasp, including the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Forestry SA and the team at FABI. They were all part of the Tree Protection Cooperative Programme (TPCP). The releases will be ongoing.

Du Buisson said Merensky (Westfalia) also takes part in the release programme and has done so extensively for the benefit of all neighbouring plantation owners.

These are the first releases outside of Australia. Consequently, the expected rate of establishment and spread of this biocontrol agent is not known and will require investigation.

Expectations are that, in time, parasitism rates will increase to over 70% as obtained in contained in release sites in Pretoria, said dr Brett Hurley, researcher in UP’s department of Zoology and Entomology.

Reconciliation has been reached between AgriLetaba and the SAPS on issues that were threatening the safety of the farming community in Tzaneen and Letsitele.

A special meeting was convened last Friday between senior members of the police and representatives of

AgriLetaba as well as the cluster CPF to unravel a series of complaints regarding police services in the area.

Mr Uwe Kroh, chairman of the CPF, said most of the problems were sorted out and the groups undertook to work together in the future. Certain strategies were agreed on and the police will cover the farming communities for 24 hours per day with safety and security over the festive season and thereafter.

The meeting was chaired by the cluster commander in Tzaneen, gen Maggie Mathebula, who promised full cooperation from the police.

Farmers in sector eight, comprising of farms around Tzaneen, will be issued with new CB radio’s and it is recommended that this service should be extended to the Letsitele area, where the community policing forum (CPF) will be restructured. The Miami satellite branch of the police, which was a matter

of concern for the farmers of Letsitele, will be in full operation in the future and can be reached on a new cell number 082 729 0231.

Kroh said the discussions will be followed up early in January to determine if the new strategies were successful.

SAPS commits to farmers’ safety

Ms Tsakani Ophelia Mushwa-na, the mother of 17 year old Jamela Mushwana of section A at Nkowankowa, is pleading with anyone who knows about her daughter’s whereabouts, to come forward with informa-tion which could help find her daughter.

Ritavi Police have confirmed Jamela’s disappearance on 22 November, when she was re-ported as not having returned from her school trip spent for a weekend at a local lodge.

Since then, Jamela’s phone has been said to be on voicemail.

Anyone who can identify her or with information about her disappearance can contact the investigating officer captain Hlengani Maswanganyi on 015 290 6135 or Constable Tsietsi Lamola 083 390 6212.

Haar ontmoeting met Tzaneen was tydens ‘n kuiertjie by ‘n niggie. In haar eie

tiese groep gewerk. In 2010 is hul ‘wonderwerk’ Janco gebore.

“Ja, ja, ja, ek is ‘n entrepreneur.”

“Hy hou my op my tone,” sê sy.

Page 8: Bulletin_131213

Limpopo Deputy Provincial Po-lice Commissioner, Major Gen-eral Lesiba Mashilo, has warned that police would no longer allow people to cancel cases against criminals who commit-ted abusive acts, because of their relationship with the victims.

Mashilo addressed hundreds of people who attended a Six-teen days of Activism against the abuse of women and children campaign at Rapitsi, Modjadjiskloof.

He said such ac-tions make criminals to continue abusing women and children and then plead with the victims to drop charges against them.

According to Mashilo most of the cases on the increase are abuse of women and children in a form of rape, assault, emo-tional interrogation and others, where the perpetrators are in most instances fa-thers, husbands or uncles to the victims.

“We appeal to people to work with police and expose crimi-nals who live amongst them and abuse them unnoticed,” he said.

Ms Norma Ngobeni, a pros-ecutor at Bolobedu Magistrates Court, said the issue of rela-

tionship in the Bolobedu area disrupts the law, as sometimes families make use of cash to con-vince the victim to drop charges.

Meanwhile, the chairperson for the Lesbian. Gay, Bisexual. Trans-sexual and Intersexual (LGBTI) association, Ms Mpho Molefe, said they were also disturbed by the treatment of their members

in communities.Molefe said mem-

bers of the LEGBTI, are subjected to all sorts of abuse like rape, assaults and that they are be-ing called names by members of commu-nity, especially men.

She said they are sometimes stabbed with all sorts of in-struments in their private parts. She ap-pealed to members of the community to ac-cept members of the LGBTI in their neigh-bourhood, as they are also human beings.

“We are mostly sub-jected to hate crimes from people who call

us names and hate us for no ap-parent reasons”, Molefe said. She called for unity in communi-ties irrespective of sex, gender or religion.

What do you have to say about the passing of Madiba and how do you feel about the future?

Lebogang Dorcus (25)

I feel very sad, but it is the way everyone goes. I am grateful for what he has done for us, because now we know how to love and respect each other. For the future I hope we continue in the way we are living

now.

Tshego Machimana (24)

I feel confused and I still need a president who treated us like Madiba did. I wish he could still be alive. May his soul rest in peace, I love you Madiba. In the future we will still treat each other as we do now.

Antonette Pienaar (18)

Joel Modapo (21)

I am so sad. It was something we were expecting, but we wish didn’t happen. Although the future will not be the same without him we will try to keep him alive in our spirit. We will live his dream– in unity.

Denicke v/d Merwe (7)

Didi Ramaila (25)

I am very sad, I will miss him. His soul must rest in peace. I don’t know what to expect of the future, but let’s hope every-thing will work out.

MJ Alam (40)

He was a great man, good example and a leader. It is sad! The future is compli-cated because some people have bad at-

titudes.

Melissa Ramphadi (19)

I feel pain because he did so much for us. He gave us free-dom! In the future ev-erything will go well because of him and his doings. We love

you Tata Madiba.

Sasol TzaneenWould like to thank our loyal

customers for their support and patience during the revamp.

We are excited to welcome all clients to our new look store.

A happy, safe Festive Season for all!

“He who pays the piper calls the tune.” – English proverb

ongelooflike pragtige nuwe perseel.

The Dance Place presented their first showcase, Out of Asia at Tzaneen Country Lodge. People were dressed up in a theatrical manner, feasting on delicious snacks and drinks while they were entertained by characters standing around setting the atmosphere. An

opening ceremony followed where the guests were invited in by an Asian-like guru, geisha and ninja and it was showtime!

A prize giving followed where all the dancers of the dance place were rewarded with a medal and certificate. Furthermore seven dancers that proved themselves through the year walked away with a floating trophy; the best overall boy dancer: Marthinus Grobler, the best overall girl dancer: Eyre Koekemoer, The best overall junior: Emily Smith, the best Acrobatic dancer: Jessica Duguid, the best Modern dancer: Stefani Swart, the best Hip Hop dancer: Verné Boshoff and the most Improved dancer: Mckayla Lauterbach.

A couple of the Hip Hop dancers represented The Dance Place at the annual Dance Art Festival in Pretoria earlier this year to showcase their routines. They had to compete against 22 dance schools, all affiliated under the International Dance Federation. Eyre Koekemoer took home a third place with

73%. The trio ‘Trouble’ by Nina Rudman, Nicola Brink and Eyre Koekemoer placed third with a percentage of 78%. Just swing your rag duet by Marthinus Grobler and Raymond Bonniwell finished in third place too with a 78%. Marthinus Grobler also did a solo routine and was rewarded a second place with 80%.

The Dance Place is a new dance school in Tzaneen that opened in February 2013. Dancers from the ages of three years and up can enrol in different dance genres such as Acrobatics, Modern Jazz and Hip Hop.

It was a magical evening spent with a great venue, fantastic support and a successful first showcase. The Dance Place has now cut its opening ribbon and is only moving forward. They give thanks to all the sponsors for contributing to a successful dance year.

Achievers in 2013Continued from last week

Celia School of Dance is gevestig by Merensky. Celia Duvenhage, onder andere ‘n moderne dansinstruktreur, het haar jaarkonsert in Oktober suksesvol afgesluit.
