Vlieg

Molebatsi Masedi That’s the right thing to do.Stephanie Devereux-Quicke Baker Is there any one out there that can actually cure a smoker for ever?Zelna Esterhuizen take the alcohol out fi rst then bodder with the smokers we do not take lives in accidents on the

Jolandi Gravett Ek stem 100% saam.

Asook ander nie-rokers.

Linda Reiners Concentrate on making our Country crime free and stop wasting time on self-infl icted choices we

make. I choose to live in a country where I can consider other people and be considered.

Pat Patterson For once, good thinking, have consideration for others, especially children and yes I am a smoker.Susan Ettmayr Yes crime is rampant, yes alcoholics cause accidents and relationship problems, yes corruption is

rife, but the issue under discussion here is a total public ban of the inhaling and exhaling of nicotine. This ban is not just being imposed in SA but throughout the world. Wake up South Africans.... smoking is bad for your health and second hand smoking is even worse for everyone around you.

Dis my oppinie.

Vone Rad My man het jare lank gerook.

Sê jou sêThe opinions/statements made herein are that of our readers and does not necessarily refl ect the views and opinions of the Bulletin. The comments of people are given verbatim. We appeal to all who take part in the debates not to use hate-speech

or to be insulting toward others.

• With all the misery that we deal with every day (poverty, corruption, welfare, unemployment, homelessness, alcohol abuse, etc.) there is now being focused on smoking. The new smoking legislation prohibits smokers from smoking in or close to any public places or close to non-smokers or children. What is your opinion about this?

Miskien was oorle oom Albert Einstein

reg: The diff erence between stupidity and ge-nius is that genius has its limits!

Is ons so dom, of is dit onverskilligheid?

Augustusmaande was daar stofstorms.

Mooi naweek!

HypocriticalSoviet Lekganyane, 072 645 9876, writes: Two or more of yesterday’s daily papers carried a story of Mr Julius Malema’s inten-tion to establish a new party. Those I have seen are the Star and the Pretoria news.

I do not wish to react to his initiative or make a commentary on the exercise of his rights. What compels me to write is the in-

stance of mentioning my name and those of other ANC comrades on separate incidences that happened in the aft ermath of his expul-sion from the African National Congress.

He mentions the dissolution of the AN-CYL National Executive Committ ee, the suspension of Comrade KabeloMataboge in the North West and the statement released by the then Limpopo Provincial Executive Committ ee under Soviet Lekganyane. These are among those he chose as his personal grievances against the ANC and why he feels a new platform should be created.

First and foremost, it should be under-stood that it is almost nine (9) months that Mr Malema has not been a member of the ANC. It is therefore a factual manipulation and historical distortion of the worst form to enumerate the instances I selected above as at that time he was disaff ected by develop-ments in the African National Congress.

Secondly, we have accepted the decision of the National Executive Committ ee of the ANC to uphold the ruling of the NDCA and also not to review it. For him to hallucinate that we released a statement renouncing him in order to propitiate favours with the new leadership and stave off any possible dissolution of the PEC is as infantile as it is parochial.

It is a statement of a nostalgic hypocrite reminiscing of his halcyon days in the Af-rican National Congress. The PEC released the statement as a matt er of principle. We would not allow any person, especially

from the province to insult the lead-ership of the ANC leadership, the 53rd National Conference and the collective

wisdom of the delegates who gathered in Mangaung in such a historic occasion.

When we met with the leadership of the ANC in February 18 2013 we said we will abide by any decision the meeting arrived at. To this day we have done exactly that without any qualm.

Thirdly, it is of paramount importance for him to dissociate our names from his libertine initiatives. He cannot be quali-fi ed to speak about our names when he has not been in the ANC for the period stated hereinabove. We are members off the ANC with an unblemished record of loyalty, obe-dience and subordination to the decisions of the majority. We are unfaltering in our membership and support to the leadership. The immiserations of a contumacious, recal-citrant and recusant conduct can never be in our names.

Research has shown that techno-wise children, who are bom-barded by a fl ood of digital in-formation every day, are fi nding it increasingly diffi cult to read texts of a more traditional kind such as those in textbooks.

They can fl ash through bits and pieces of information on social media but are not as well equipped to cope with more

complex reading where they are expected to follow arguments logically and see the links be-tween facts.

Most learners have a limited att ention span, fi nd it diffi cult to study for any length of time and a do not retain the information learnt.

Braam Brand from Smart Brian, a literacy institute based in Cape

The presentation will be made in both English and Afrikaans. The course is open to learners from Grade 6 to 12 as well as to students and other interested parties. Participants will be taught advanced reading and

b u l l e t i n .

‘n bekende in konstruksiekringe, gewerk.

“Ek wou kyk of ek op my eie voete sou kon staan. Ek

al le a f d e l i n g s

This is what the containers that Castro Oil has donated to the GTM for the mechanics to put old oil into, look like. It will be handed out to the backyard mechanics in Claude Wheatley Street, wokring on the southern bank of the Leta-ba River. This is a means to stop pollution of the river’s water by the oil that flows into it. Later on bigger drums will be put there as well. The big drums will be removed and emptied on a regular basis. Photo: Beaunice Mnisi

At last something has been done to try and prevent the dumping of old motor oil in the Letaba River.

The Bulletin sat down with GTM mayor Dikeledi Mmetle and municipal manager Masiye Mankabidi to discuss the issue of the pollution and contamina-tion of the Letaba River which fl ows be-side Claude Wheatley road in Tzaneen.

The Bulletin has for many years re-ported on the growing dangers of pollu-tion to the river aft er the sangoma who calls himself “King Maphungubwe” and the backyard mechanics took permanent residence on the river bank.

The danger of old drained oil from the vehicles being repaired fl owing into the river, has been cause for grave concern for residents — more so for farmers down stream, where citrus is irrigated from the river.

Mmetle confi rmed plans to fence off the river, once the construction of Claude Wheatley is completed. In addition the GTM made an application at the end of May to the department of environmen-tal aff airs to have the area turned into a park. They are still awaiting a response to the application and said they will fol-low up with the person in charge.

Meanwhile Castro Oil has donated spe-cial containers that the GTM will hand over to the mechanics to dispose of the oil as a temporary measure, said Manka-bidi. The long term plan is to have oil drums strategically placed alongside Claude Wheatley. They have also se-cured a deal with Oil Corp to collect full oil drums and dispose of the old oil.

They are also looking at an alternative space to move the motor mechanics to, to ultimately solve the problem of pollu-tion.

Partnerships should be fostered — Land Reform SummitThe Greater Tzaneen Municipality hosted a land reform summit last week, where repre-sentatives from diff erent organizations gath-ered in Tzaneen.

The purpose of the summit was for diff er-ent participants to discuss issues pertaining to land reform, agriculture and forestry sec-tors.

Among those att ending were offi cials from the departments of agriculture, forestry and fi sheries, rural development, Limpopo LED, SEDA, Greater Tzaneen Development Agen-cy, ZZ2, Bosveld Citrus as well as other small scale farmers.

Fostering partnerships was a message that was constantly reiterated at the summit, and farmers were encouraged to network and learn from one another. Diff erent ways of establish-ing this were highlighted by several speakers.

The att endants were broken up into diff er-ent groups and discussions on several topics took place.

The outcomes of the discussions were then announced and adopted as resolutions of the summit.

Farmers also got the opportunity to show-case and sell some of their produce, ranging from free range eggs to fresh produce such as tomatoes, cabbage, spinach and avocado.

• The farmers identifi ed a need for gov-ernment to setup one big facility like a pack house to service a group of farmers in a par-ticular geographical area.

There was also a proposal for farmers to form a coop that could run a processing plant.

Among some of the infrastructure challeng-es that were raised were a need for a pack house facility, packaging material, agro pro-cessing facilities, refurbishment of industrial sites at Nkowakowa, access to water, fen-cing, access to electricity, access roads and agro processing facilities for dried fruit.

Participants also pleaded with commercial banks to support development of farms in terms of a variety of products such as acqui-ring land and fi nance up to 90% with no se-curity needed (assets to serve as security).

The DA in Limpopo has released a survey suggesting that poor schools in Limpopo are short-changed, in that they are being allocated funds that are far below the national set standard amount that schools are supposed to receive. According to the report “schools across Limpopo are struggling to stay afl oat fi ve months into the school year, because the education department has not sent them basic funding as required by law.” The report claims that schools serving the province’s poorest learners are receiving as litt le as R30 per child from the department, which is far below the national standard set by minister Angie Mot-shekga of R1 010 per learner.

Short-changed…

There was ululation, hugs and bold smiles when the members of the Motlhago and Sharplyn Community Development Pro-gram were handed over the keys to a brand new bakkie.

Through generous donations from various donors, the program could invest in their very fi rst set of four wheels.

Ms Margret Mason, one of the founders of the program, said they used to struggle with transport and had to hire private vehicles to transport their products to various sales points. She said in one instance she remem-bers they had to pay R1 000 for transport from Lenyenye to Kgapane.

The Motlhago and Sharplyn Community Development Pro-gram was established in 1995 to help allevi-ate poverty by teach-ing people sewing skills.

The women make comforters, school uniforms, dog bas-kets and various oth-er household items.

Once they complete the sewing process, they sell their pro-ducts from the com-munity centre at number 2294, Main road, Lenyenye (Ku-wait section). They also transport the products to various bus stations where they will be sold.

The women said they felt a sense of accomplishment and were overjoyed at their donors’ genero-sity.

They pleaded for more donations as the funds they had gathered were not enough to purchase a canopy for their new bakkie. They how-ever vowed to keep doing good work re-gardless.

We want to thank our social partners in media for their role in assisting us to curbcorruption in various municipalities and communicating decisions of our union.

Twee nuwe nywerheidsgebou verrys tans in

Hier staan Ianiovanni, Marlonio, Ilisiani, Willisto-

fani, Karinialini en die godfather homself, Christianiovani... Hmmmm.

HANDELSNUUS • COMMERCIAL NEWSMr Kobus Pienaar and Ms Natalie Moss are seen here with the new bus that will be used. They represent the two families who own Tzaneng Shuttle Service. Photo: Beaunice Mnisi

A new shutt le service between Tzaneen and Pretoria has been introduced this week. The proud owners are Tzaneen locals André Pienaar and Natalie Moss, in as-sociation with Kobus and Kathy Pienaar

The owners had done some proper research and found that there was a clear need for a reli-able shutt le service.

They use a new sixteen seater luxury bus, as well as a big Chal-lenger trailer providing more than enough room for luggage.

Moss and Pienaar are the dri-vers. They are well-known faces in Tzaneen as they were both members of the SAPS’ Tzaneen detectives branch.

The shutt le leaves every Friday and Sunday from Tzaneen to Pre-toria via Polokwane and returns on the same day. Passengers can expect to pay R300 one way and R550 for a return ticket. If you are travelling from Polokwane to Pretoria you can expect to pay R250 for one way tick-et and R450 for a return ticket.

The shutt le stops in Pretoria at the Gateway Centre in Pretorius Street as well as at the Gautrain Station in Hatfi eld.

Tzaneng Shutt le Service also has daytrips to Polokwane with their fi rst mall run (Tzaneen to Mall of the North and Meropa Casino) scheduled for 15 June. The shutt le will leave from Tzaneen at 09:00 and return at 16:00. Tickets will be R150 per person for a return trip.

Exciting prospects for day trips to the Kruger National Park with a special discount for pensioners are some of the great things planned for Tzaneng Shutt le Service.

They’ve already had requests for a regular run from Tzaneen to Pre-toria and back on Wednesdays.

The bus can also be rented for functions and trips, with merely a call for a quotation.

Prospective passengers are en-couraged to book to visit a day longer in Pretoria or Tzaneen. This is as a result of today’s run (Friday 14 June) to Pretoria that will only be returning to Tzaneen on Monday aft ernoon 17 June, be-cause of the long weekend (Mon-day being a public holiday).

Jacaranda FM will during June and July launch an oppor-tunity for talent who want to get their ‘foot in the door’. The initiative will coincide with Soup Kitchens that the station will be rolling out with Spur Steak Ranches across Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo.

Lekker to Give: Jacaranda FM will be doing two major projects this year in line with the desire to build commu-nities for good. In order to make winter more bearable, soup kitchens are being arranged across the station’s broadcast footprint. The station will be calling upon its entire audience to join in and give a helping hand. Additionally, Spurs’ 110 chain restaurants will also be collection points for the educational books which will

The boys and the girls soccer teams from Blue Mountain College at Alôn played a few matches against di erent high schools during the season and performed well. The boys took part in a six-a-side tournament at Merensky High School and performed well against the bigger schools. The BMC girls were triumphant and have won all their games this season. Well done to all for a successful soccer season.

Two very t young athletes from Unicorn Primary School, Jack Stewart and Yvonne Botha, each managed to receive a gold medal during a cross country meeting in Nylstroom recently. Unicorn is exceptionally proud of both these children. The school is looking forward to many

more outstanding results.

Stanford Lake College can boast fi ve hockey teams that made it through to the Limpopo hockey league semi-fi nals. The boys fi rst team, the boys second team and boys u.15’s will travel to Polokwane tomorrow, to play the following teams: fi rst team versus

Groblersdal Academy, the second team versus Groblersdal Academy and the u.15’s versus LTT in the fi nals.

The girls fi rst team and the u.14’s will travel to Groblersdal on 20 July to play in the semi-fi nals.

“Oh, what a scrum! Ou Vett ie, what a scrum!”‘Tja, Oubal en sy vrinne het Saterdagaand

vermink.” — Richie McCaw

Bulletin

This year’s Comrades left two marathon athletes thankful towards a local congregation.

Dog (Christopher) Noel and Mientjie Els wish to express their

gratitude to the parishioners of the Tzaneen Catholic Church for their support given through prayers, thoughts and a open heart in raising funds for the

Tzaneen Cathedral. It was a tough race and their thoughts and prayers

were experienced as expressed by Dog Noel: “It felt like God was carrying me the whole way, protecting me against the wind and terrible heat, and only put me down at the final 100 metre mark to claim my part of the race.

“What a team effort when you run with God in your heart!” said Noel. * Noel is also the Bulletin’s cartoonist, whose work is seen on our letters page every week.

Slabber.

The annual derby between Stanford Lake College and Beaulieu College was once again a huge suc-cess. Stanford could be seen as the overall winner, once again.

All the hockey teams performed well. Beaulieu is a very strong hockey school and their players only play and train on astro — which does work to Stan-ford’s advantage for their home games.

The u.15 girls played with determination and drew 1-1. The u.15 boys came out playing hard and com-pletely dominated the game. Mfumo Mongwe was the star player, assisting Adam McGaffin with two goals and scoring one himself (final score 3-0).

The girls first team was well contested by both teams. SLC came out good winners at 2-1. The boys second team dominated and won 3-0 in a display of coordinated team performance where everyone played a part in the convincing win.

The girls second team had tough competition and their 1-0 loss was a good reflection of the game. The boys first team were expecting a very tough game as they were dominated last year by Beaulieu, who came out strongly. They controlled possession in the first half, but Stanford turned the game around in the second half, due to some good passing and team work. In the end both teams were unable to convert their chances and the final score of 0-0 was again a fair representation of a very good game of hockey.

Mountain biking: The SLC Mountain bikers were completely dominant against their Beaulieu counterparts and enjoyed a great early morning ride. Jason Stroud won the senior boys’ category, Benno Prinsloo won the junior boys’ and Sarah Pogrund won the junior girls’ categories.

Netball: The netball girls rounded off a very suc-cessful season with some exciting fixtures against Beaulieu.

The u.14s went out with a ‘bang’ and dominated on the court. They started off slowly, but after the first half, they proved they were clearly the stronger team as they pulled away to end the match 14-4. Shikara Janke was on form with her shooting and Anke Vaughan and Funi Thovhakale had a phenom-enal game, defending their shooters, constantly

preventing the ball from going near their goal. The u.14s have had a great season, playing well

as a team combining strength and support to each other.

The u.15s and u.17s both had good games, but they allowed their opponents to take advantage of their seemingly tiredness and take the lead in both games. The second team once again played some great netball. Their defence was solid with Mmampi Mangena and Chikho Majuba showing exceptional skill in the circle. After a tight first half, the teams were even. The team showed their solid determi-nation and managed to end the game two goals ahead.

The first team ended their season with a tight game. Beaulieu play a very high standard of net-ball and have had a successful season. Stanford’s girls came onto the court strongly and with grit and purpose. Amber-Lee de Villiers and Lalla Shipalana put pressure on their opposition’s attacks and made some super interceptions in the circle. Cassie Mc-Gaffin held it together in the mid-court and as al-ways, brought some calm to a tense game. Michelle Pilusa and Roelien Prinsloo played well together and moved the ball cleverly around the circle to get some great goals. In the end Beaulieu managed to clinch a victory.

Rugby: All three SLC Teams showed some great heart and represented the school well. The u.15’s played really well and earned a victory. The Second XV faced a good opponent in what was a closer game than the score reflects, losing their fixture 7-0. The First XV, however, did all at SLC proud, and for a second year in a row beat the Beaulieu First XV con-vincingly with a 17-7 victory.

The boys battled to find their rhythm in the first half, and defended bravely to keep the visitors from scoring any points, despite them enjoying almost 80% of the territory and possession. They then pulled together in the second half and put enough pressure on Beaulieu in defence to force mistakes, which Thabang Mathale turned into two great tries. Brandon Wright showed great strength and skill in both attack and defence, and shared the man of the match award with Thabang.

Elf langasems is Tzaneen se trots

Sipho Sello, Herman de Bruyn, Tomothy Nkuna, Paul Zaayman, Mientjie Els en Johan Thiart het die Comrades suksesvol voltooi.
