Keiran reflected that it had been 20 years since he had sat at the Brighton Rotary head table and on that occasion he was President of Brighton Beach.

He went on to thank all members for the warm

welcome he had received from all club members since moving from Brighton Beach to Brighton.

Keiran was one of 6 children, grew up in East Brighton, went to St Finbars Primary School, then Christian Brothers College in St Kilda, and then a partly completed Bachelor of Business.

He met his wife Anne 44 years ago and like Damien she went to Star of the Sea. She was just 16 years old and he was 18. Picking her up from school in a Panel Van often caused a slight problem with the nuns. Anne’s now a retired Primary School Teacher having spent most of her teaching life at Brighton Beach Primary.

They have 2 married daughters, one with 2 children who he baby sits solo on a Monday and the other has 1 child, Harry who is 8 months old, and he baby sits him on a Wednesday. Harry was born 3 months Premature, weighed just 700 grams, and spent the first 6 months of his life in Intensive care at Monash Children’s hospital. Harry was on all the TV news and in the Local paper 2 months ago when he finally came home.

Keiran enjoys Bike Riding for fitness with some of Hampton’s road groups, and has organised many bike groups to Europe and Asia. The highlight of his riding achievements was his team winning a 1,500 km Solar/Human powered bike race from Adelaide to Broken Hill and then to Melbourne.

In Rotary Keiran was a Charter member of Brighton Beach Rotary when it was formed by Brighton 22 years ago. Having been approached by Ted Wall-Smith & John King to join.

Over that time he’s been Charter Secretary, Secretary, President, Treasurer, and organiser of a significant number of events for that Club and also District. He, along with Julie Avery, also played a significant role in the organising of the 2011 District Conference in Adelaide.

He is a long-time supporter of the Every Rotarian Every Year Program, and also the Cambodian ‘World of Difference’ Program which Brighton is involved in, and he has a Paul Harris Recognition with 2 Sapphires.

Keiran’s professional background was originally Computers (Information Technology) and managed systems at RMIT, then various councils including Moorabbin, Glen Eira, Bayside, South Gippsland and Brimbank. He also ran his own IT consulting company for 15 years.

He met Julie Avery through Rotary in 1995 and in 1999 they purchased Brighton Travelworld. Since then his career has transitioned to travel where he looks after all the ‘non-consulting’ part of the business. Brighton Travelworld has had a strong connection to the club being the only organisation that has Sponsored Brighton Rotary events since the day this our club was chartered 45 years ago.

Keiran went on to explain that some sponsors like Brighton Travelworld receive almost no business from the public who attend club events or purchase club raffle tickets. He is therefore grateful to members who support him and the other sponsors.

He also reminded members that generally Internet prices in the case of travel are the same as those in a Bricks & Mortar travel agencies. So why support Internet companies who never provide sponsorship.

Much of Keiran’s time is now taken up as President of the Church Street Traders Association which he recently relaunched after 5 years of inactivity. They’re spending a great deal of time getting, street furniture repaired and repainted, investigating ways of improving parking, promoting the street, and ensuring Rotary Place is returned to its former prominence.

But Keiran’s biggest project is the Rapid removal of Graffiti and installation of CCTV systems to improve community safety in Church Street. Council has given the Association $15,000 this year to help achieve the Anti-graffiti and community safety projects. If people walk along Church Street thinking it doesn’t have a graffiti problem, then Keiran’s project is succeeding.

At right: Before and after graffiti removal.

Chairman Brendan Kierce introduced President Damien Hellard and he welcomed everyone to the meeting. Damien started by thanking Brendan and said it was good to have some Geelong people on the front table. Damien welcomed the guests including John Wheller a former member of the Rotary Club of Brighton Beach who said that he wasn’t still in Rotary but now is now on garden leave. Tony Naughton had a guest in Craig Beaver who was welcomed.

Damien said that the previous week we had a guest speaker in Dr Elisa Hill who was a neuroscientist in the Medical Faculty of Melbourne University and Damien admitted that he didn’t understand much of what she spoke about but realised that a lot of people who attended the meeting did by the number of questions they asked. He also mentioned the AGM which we had at the previous meeting and thanked all involved including PP Bill Howley, PP Arthur Hubbard, Secretary David Finney, Eddie McGarry for filling in for David while he was away and Geoff Shaw.

Damien then said they we would have two Rotarians Behind the Badge speakers in Keiran Cromie and PP David Grodski. He also said we would have a presentation from Norm Thomas about the RCB Community Grants Program.

David Finney: David mentioned the RCB Christmas Lunch on Sunday 3 December and said that bookings had closed. He said well done Geoff Cunningham for organising the event and thanked those who had registered to be there (see a summary and photos back cover). He said that while he and Stuart had been travelling around in Cambodia the previous week we did some really good work. A write up and photos are on page 9 of this Bulletin.

Stuart McIntyre: Great Australia Day Swim 2018. Stuart said they are on track with this event and gave us an update on a couple of items. He said that Swimming Australia had come on board as a sponsor and they along with Optus are running a big campaign in January with Australian swims. He said there are various iconic events and they will promote the theme “Get out and Go Swimming” and we will get some publicity out of that and some money from Swimming Australia.

Norm Thomas: Norm spoke about Rotary Club of Brighton Community Grants Program. He said that applications are now open for this Program which supports humanitarian projects internationally, nationally and locally. Further details and an application form are attached on the club website.

Mac Chapman: Senior Citizens Lunch, Wednesday 6 December.Mac said everything was ready for this event but parking might be a problem. There is limited parking on site so best to look in the neighbouring streets. There will be entertainment, a raffle and it should be a good day. A write up and photos will be in the Bulletin next week.

David said he had a very privileged and a very interesting life. He grew up in East Brighton and was born a twin at the end of the war. His mother who was only 4 foot 10 inches tall, didn’t know she was having him as she was pretty timid with the doctor

and she didn’t allow herself to be properly examined. His sister was born first and the doctor didn’t know there was another baby coming. His father at that time had just come out of the army and he had joined up in 1938 in the Ambulance Corps and at the time they only had horse drawn ambulances. At the end of the war his uncle was unfortunately killed in New Guinea crossing a rope bridge and around 8 other Australian army personnel were lost and never found. As a result of that the Australian Government gave his aunty a 100 pounds. She went back with her daughter to live with his grandmother and she gave his parents the 100 pounds for a deposit on a house where Dendy Street meets the Nepean Highway. They lived there for a while and moved to Coles Street Brighton where David spent most of his life. He was one of 4 children. He has been married to Helen for 48 years and they have two daughters and 8 grandchildren. David said he is very lucky guy.

At school he was encouraged to stay with the sciences. None of them knew what they wanted to do and they looked at all their options and he chose to study medicine which he did at Monash University and he managed to graduate 50 years ago at the Alfred Hospital. He said would be believe that at the time he had black curly hair and it was a very dangerous time for young doctors. Once the young nurses found out that you had a car you became very, very popular. He had a red and black Austin Healey and it was hot said David. He finished his time at the Alfred and he remembered one night that they had this very wild party with some of the young unmarried people at the hospital and the next thing he remembered was being woken up by a Greek cleaner at 6am and she screamed and ran out of the room. He got up and decided to go home and went to bed. He was the only one home of the 4 siblings and his father called him down for lunch and as he sat at the table. His father asked him where was the other half of his moustache. He had only had it for 6 months and he was really proud of it. Anyway some nurse must have taken it off and he rang his mates and he said that they had promised to look after each other. They said that he shouldn’t worry about the moustache but rather the tattoo he had on his butt. But of course there wasn’t one there but they were wild times.

He decided to go and become a registrar in Launceston, Tasmania and his father had lived there as a young boy and left there in 1929 after a flood. He said he had the best year of his life there and there was a very cute nurse there. He asked the outgoing registrar did he have any challenges with this lady and he said that Helen didn’t like doctors. About a month later they were looking after a burns patient together and he thought to himself that here

only chance that he was going to have. They were both wearing masks and he was too nervous to ask her out for as date because guys at that time hated rejection. So he just took control and said “You know that I have been here a month and it was about time I took you out”. She said that she couldn’t go out with him that night but she was free that day so he rang his consultant and said he really wanted the day off which he agreed to. They went swimming all day. Helen went overseas a month later which was a bit of a shock to him as she had planned that. Cutting a long story short David said that a two years later he was in London and Helen who had not gone any further than South Africa arrived in London and he picked her up in Southhampton and that night he said to her that they should just go and get married. She said yes and they went to get married but she couldn’t as she didn’t have residence in the UK but on then fifteenth day they got married.

When he left the Alfred he knew that he didn’t want to be a consultant looking at bottoms for the rest of his life he said with no intended disrespect. He wanted to be either a physician or a family practitioner and while he was in London waiting for Helen he got in touch with the post graduate community and he told them he was very interested in why people get sick and how you actually deliver medical service. They said there were two courses one in Edinburgh and one in London but he won’t get in as he doesn’t have the 5 years qualifications. He applied and was accepted into Edinburgh University and he and Helen had their first year of marriage there. He was studying all about those people who were seeking medical care and don’t need it and those who need it don’t get it and how to identify that group and turn their lives around. He said it was a fantastic year. His father always said he would help support him when he was studying but when he got married his father said the ‘Grodski bank’ had just closed down. So he came home back to Brighton and he had always been a patient of the New Street Medical Centre and they invited him to join them but he didn’t want to at the time but worked there for 20 wonderful years. He said it was an absolute privilege being a doctor in Brighton. He wanted to deliver babies and look after the whole family. After 20 years of being there he was basically selling time. He asked the people there what would happen if they had to compulsory have to pick up children from school once a week? What would happen if they took their wife on a proper holiday? What would happen if they had compulsory study every year. They all agreed and he planned this enormous conference and he was very excited and he was driving the concept of change. But it didn’t work out as they didn’t want change and nothing happened. He wrote a letter to them and thanked them for the best 20 years of his life and he said he was retiring. This caused absolute chaos as he was the busiest partner but he gave 6 months notice and left the practice. In the meantime Helen had started a nursery and he was handy with construction and had experience on a farm. He realised that because he understood latin through medicine he could apply that to Horticulture. He also found that he was artistic and started doing landscape gardening. He has been 20 years in gardening and his centre has won an award 3 years in a row. He now works there one day a week and gives more time to his senior years and his family. He said that he was very honoured to have been President of the Rotary Club of Brighton.

Cambodia Revisted

David Finney and Stuart McIntyre recently spent a week visiting our Cambodia project near Siem Reap. The 75000 cubic metre dam work (75m litre) has been completed and is nearly full.Next item is to build the tank stand and install the solar pump and filter, for the provision of a communal clean water supply. This is starting now Then, starting in January, we commence the cattle and crops program. We have sorted out the micro finance rules and these have to be endorsed by the commune chief in conjunction with the local civil governor. We have also arranged for the employment of a teacher for one year after which the current villagers will take over the teaching. This is all in stage 1 and with the benefit of RI grants, the budget is USD96250.We are in the process of applying for further grants with a similar budget, where the “club’ contributions are from RC Balwyn and RC Darwin ($25k x 2) plus $10k from us.This will fund the fish farm and more agricultural (crop) works. The project follows the initial plan developed by Erik Vandenberg and PP Barry Hickman in 2016 and is progressing as planned. It has the backing of the local governor, police and monks, and of course the people of the villages who are to benefit and who will take control. Needless to say the work of “our man on the ground” Rithy Lay, is an essential ingredient to the success of the project and he is doing a marvellous job on our behalf.

The wonderful setting of the Royal Brighton Yacht Club awaited 95 attendees last Sunday for the

annual RCB Christmas Lunch and Chairman Geoff Cunningham opened the proceedings by welcoming

everybody and introducing President Damien Hellard who was outshone by daughter Amelie

who insisted on joining her dad at the mike. Damien said he was very pleased to see how many people

had come and thanked Geoff for his marvellous organisation of the event. He also acknowledged

PP Dale Hoy’s birthday and the presence of Sandra Banks, Karen Joel, Helen Ward and Yvette Ward.

Damien said we can make the world a better place and said that Christmas was a time for everyone to come together. He also mentioned the Great

Australian Day Swim and that there would not be a meeting on Thursday 25 January prior to the swim. He said Anthony Langley would like to hear from

anyone interested in volunteering for the Swim. Richard Thomas then sang several numbers from

the shows as well as a few Christmas songs. Superb! Damien presented several awards which are shown

below. All in all a great day was had by all with great food and wine served by the friendly Royal Brighton

Yacht Club staff.
