Cuba Wins Battle with Barbados TULSA, USA (July 15, 2014) – Barbados showed it can play with the top teams of the tournament, but Cuba came away with the 25‐13, 25‐21, 25‐17 Pool B victory on Tuesday at the NORCECA Boys’ U19 Continental Championship at the Cox Business Center Arena. Cuba (2‐0) will conclude pool play on Wednesday against Mexico (1‐0) at 4 p.m. CT. Barbados (0‐2) will look for its first victory against Guatemala (0‐1) at 2 p.m. Barbados’ passing was improved on Tuesday and the team looked more comfortable running its plays. “We worked on our passing,” Barbados Team Captain Andriy Stapleton said. “We came into the game and used what we learned in training. The passes were a lot better. Once the passing got going the sets got going and we got some kills. It did feel good.” Cuba was focused on Wednesday’s match against Mexico. “Tomorrow’s match against Mexico is very important,” Cuba Coach Roberto Garcia Garci said. “Mexico is a strong team because they are good mentally and have good preparation.” On Tuesday, Cuba led in kills (38‐28), blocks (8‐6) and aces (4‐2). It also took advantage of 25 Barbados errors while committing only 15. Stapleton led all scorers with 17 points on a match‐high 13 kills, two blocks and a match‐high two aces. However he didn’t get much help as Barbados’ next two leading scorers, Carlos Cyrus and Ahkeem Mayers each scored five points. Cuba was paced by Miguel Gutierrez and Ismel Pelayo, who each scored 11 points. Each player scored on 10 attacks. Pelayo added and ace while Gutierrez had a block. Quotes Cuba Captain Daikel Fernandez: “We didn’t start the match with much excitement or enthusiasm. It doesn’t matter what team we play, we should start really tough. It doesn’t matter the level. Puerto Rico Holds off Nicaragua TULSA, USA (July 15, 2014) – Puerto Rico overcame a second‐set challenge from Nicaragua to defeat the Central American side, 25‐14, 30‐28, 25‐18 on Wednesday in a Pool A match at the NORCECA Boys’ U19 Continental Championship at the Cox Business Center Arena. Puerto Rico (1‐0) will face the United States (1‐0) in the final pool play match for both teams. Nicaragua finishes pool play at 0‐2. Nicaragua was trailing 17‐12 in the second set, but outscored Puerto Rico 11‐6 to tie the score at 23‐23. Puerto Rico reached set point first at 24‐23 on an attack by Francis Robles, but had an error on the next attack. Puerto Rico reached set point four more times, but was thwarted each time either by an error or by Guatemala’s attack. Finally, Puerto Rico reached set point at 29‐28 on a kill from Ivan Fernandez and won the set on a block by Robles. “They played very good,” Puerto Rico Team Captain Luis Ocasio said of the second set. “Our defense was weak. We did not play as well as we could have.” “We tried to play with our hearts,” Nicaragua Team Captain Alejandro Barrios Gabriel said. “We tried to honor our country, especially in the second set. We played our best the entire match, but the second set was the best.” Puerto Rico led in kills (43‐22), blocks (7‐3) and aces (8‐5). Nicaragua scored 30 points on Puerto Rico errors while committing 22. Jonathan Rodriguez led Puerto Rico with 10 points on seven kills and three aces. Ivan Fernandez and Ocasio each added eight points. Nicaragua outside hitter Juan Reyes led all scorers with 11 points on eight attacks, one block and two aces. Freddy Vanegas added seven. Mexico Beats Guatemala; Sets up Showdown with Cuba TULSA, USA (July 15, 2014) – Mexico improved to 2‐0 on Tuesday with a 25‐16, 25‐15, 25‐12 victory over Guatemala in a Pool B match at the NORCECA Boys’ U19 Continental Championship at the Cox Business Center Arena. Mexico’s win sets up a showdown with undefeated Cuba (2‐0) in the Pool B finale on Wednesday a 4 p.m. CT. The winner will advance straight to Friday’s semifinals, while the loser will have to play in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Guatemala (0‐2) will try to pick up a victory on Wednesday against Barbados (0‐2) at 2 p.m. “We know that tomorrow is going to be a very tough match, but we are getting prepared and we will be ready to play tomorrow,” Mexico Team Captain Ridl Garay said. Mexico never struggled against Guatemala, leading the statistics in kills (30‐20), blocks (11‐0) and aces (7‐3). Mexico scored on 27 Guatemala errors while committing 20. Garay and teammate Bruno Cruz led the scoring with 10 points each. Garay scored on nine kills and one block. Cruz scored on nine attacks and one ace.
