2014 NORCECA WOLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFICATION, GROUP Q
LA HABANA, CUBA, MAY 12-18, 2014

to adjust their game performance to end the match without major difficulties by winning
the following three sets in row 25-3, 25-9 and 25-12.
“My teammates were surprised by the slow game, soft and low spikes. They were not able
to find the blocking height and the defense position. Nevertheless finally they rectified
their team performance and as a result of it I am happy now”, stated Francisco Cruz,
Trinidad and Tobago Head Coach.
For her part, Kelly-Anne Billingy, the captain who will be turning into 28 years old tomorrow, 11 of them dedicated to this sport, recognized they started to play too slowly. ”It is what usually happens when a team is starting a great tournament", said the player who is taking part in the French league”. Cuba defeated Curacao smoothly in three sets in a row
Havana, Cuba, May 14th, 2014. The host team made its debut with a win versus Curacao
in three consecutive sets in the closing match on the opening day of the NORCECA
Qualification Tournament of the Q Pool for the Women’s World Championship which took
place in the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum Arena.
Although among the participating teams Cubans have the youngest age-average, they are
taller than their today’s opponents and also showed a technical and tactical game more
harmonic which was obviously seen throughout the match: 25-5, 25-17 and 25-18.
The school player, Melissa Vargas, just 14 years old, became the best scorer both in the
match and on the first competition day by scoring 16 points. She was followed by her
teammate Jennifer Álvarez, with 13 points, the only ones players with double digit score,
jointly with the visiting player Chirstine Anthony (11).
Juan Carlos Gala, the Cuban head coach, stated “the first match is always difficult and
much more for a team so young. The service did not fulfil the expectations and it is
precisely our strength in order to meet the other teams. However, the victory is gratifying
and especially when it is in front of their fans for whom paradoxically they do not usually
play”.
The central zone player, Rosanna Giel, local captain, recognized the team lacked a bit of
motivation. “As match progressed, we gained confidence. However it must not happen as
the opponents may develop their game if given the opportunity”.
For his side, Henry Delfina, the visiting team’s head coach, did not hesitate to assess Cuba
as both a world top-level and strong team. “My girls got nervous in the first set when the
service was also a failure and particularly versus an opponent whose service is tough.
During the rest of the match, they improved their game but it was not enough to defeat
the local ones”.
Christine herself, the Curacao’s captain, said “we were really nervy, the tension
diminished afterwards, but we finally did not play as we have been able to perform in
other occasions. We were slow against an opposing team who in spite of being young will
have a great future”.
