    Seventeenth Sunday in

    Ordinary Time

    AVILAS

This coming Friday, AUGUST 3, is the First Friday of the month, when our parish branch of the Avilas meets for prayer. We go to 8:00 AM Mass, stay about 1/2 hour beyond to pray specifically for religious vocations and we pray a Rosary together. Please join us if you like—no reservarions necessary!

    PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS

This week, please pray especially for the following priests of our diocese, who have served and continue to do so very faithfully over many years….

Sunday, July 29 Bishop Anthony M. Pilla

Monday, July 30 Rev. Dominic Mondzelewski, OSB

    Rev. Robert Jackson

Tuesday, July 31 Rev. Anthony Suso

    Rev. Vincent Hawk

Wednesday, August 1 Rev. Joseph Piskura

    Rev. Victor Cimperman

Thursday, August 2 Rev. John Retar

    Rev. Michael Woost

Friday, August 3 Rev. Gary Hoover, OSB

    Rev. Daniel Fickes

    Saturday, August 4 All Priests

Kindle in their hearts a spark of love for

the Precious Blood and for souls. Precious Blood of Jesus, cover our priests and

protect them from the snares of the enemy...

Mother Catherine Aurelia, Foundress Contemplative Sisters

    Adorers of the Precious Blood

Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. When they had had their fill, He said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”

    John 6:10, 12

    ■ I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find;

knock and the door will be opened to you. Luke 11:9

Our God knows how to answer the prayers of his beloved creatures. It is our task to recognize the often unexpected ways He answers these prayers. While attending university in Rome, I always dreaded the biannual transatlantic flights between the seminary and my diocese. Routinely, I would pray asking God to provide tranquil weather for the journey. Unfortunately, and just as routinely, it would rain on the day of my departure. Sharing this situation with my spiritual director after a few years of this occurrence, I learned something quite unexpected. My spiritual director had been a pilot before becoming a priest. He told me that when it rains on the ground, the atmosphere above the clouds is relieved of its pressure. As a result, flying conditions are actually improved when it rains. When we seek and knock, it’s important that we remain open to the unexpected ways in which Our Lord always answers our prayers.

    SPAGHETTI DINNER

    FUNDRAISER

At our Planning Meeting this past week, we decided on an overall timeline for accomplishing various tasks in preparation for this happy and important fundraising event. Also decided: a few details about how to best publicize the dinner (within and outside of the parish), how and when to sell our Dinner Tickets, the exact type of food we will serve, and more details about our Chinese Auction and raffles. Remember the Spaghetti Dinner is on Sunday, OCT. 7, from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 PM. Please be sure to SAVE THE DATE! We’ll have lots more over the next weeks—watch your Bulletin for details!

    SOCIAL CONCERNS MEETING

Notice in the “Looking ahead” area that we have a meeting of the Social Concerns Committee here next week, on Mon., AUGUST 6 at 6:30 PM. Social Concerns looks at the needs of the poor, the ill, and all the marginalized around us, both inside of our parish and in the wider local community. We focus on finding ways to help these people to the best of our ability as a parish. Our Chairperson, Toni Johnson, and all the committee members invite you to join them at this next meeting. Come and listen, and/or come and share your thoughts with us!

Reminder: Fr. Gary will be installed as Pastor of St. Adalbert on Sunday, SEPT. 23, 11 AM MASS. Save the date!
