Combining Sunday Masses? Changing Sunday Mass Time?

Over the past several months there have been many discussions among Staff, Pastoral Council and

interested parishioners about consolidating the two Sunday Masses. ln most parishes one major

reason prompting such changes is a priest shortage. That is clearly not the case at SPN. Ours is a

people shortage.

Another major reason prompting Mass consolidations where attendance is sparse is the quality of the

Sunday liturgy. How well does a particular liturgy promote not only the sense of the sacred, but alsoof importance, a sense of belonging, a sense of community, among participants? There is little senseof community generated when rows of empty pews separate participants or when pews with two othree or four people in them are spread out throughout the Church.

Over the past year (July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013) the average attendance at the 8:30 AMMass has been 57 people, and an average of 105 people for the 10:30 AM Mass. (The average for althree weekend liturgies has been @260 people.)

In a Church that seats 500+ we are currently celebrating two Sunday morning Masses for a total o

@162 people on any given Sunday.

A current suggestion before the Staff and the Pastoral Council is that we move to a singleSunday Mass at 9:30 AM. lt is also suggested that any change begin on Sunday, September 82013. The current Saturday 4 PM Mass would continue as scheduled.

A plus side of consolidation is that it would enable us to better plan both Children's and Adult FaithFormation offerings on Sundays, as well as build such offerings around a monthly breakfast ooccasionally follow them up with a parish wide brunch.

The downside of course is that you always lose some people whenever Mass schedules change. Weneed to consider in our already small congregation, how great those losses would be.

lt is very important that we get as much feedback and input from as many people as possible since adecision such as this affects all of us in many different ways.

Please let me, members of the Parish Staff, Pastoral Council or any others in various parishleadership positions, know your feelings and your reasoning concerning the particular suggestionthat we consolidate to one 9:30 AM Mass on Sundays, as well as your feelings about consolidation ingeneral and what time you feel would be best if we did consolidate.

Sincerely yours,

PASTORAL CORNER

"Go, and do likewise"

It is all as matter of perspective. This photograph, “Earthrise,"was taken from the moon on December 24, 1968. It was therst time we could see ourselves as one, one planet, on eaith, one people. This photograph changed forever how we answer

the question, “Who is my neighbor?" My heart skipped several

beats when I saw this photo. Scriptures have hinted at thepossibility of this photograph for millennia.

One photograph allows us to see as God sees. There are no borders, no nations, no divisions — only one beautifulcreation. This photo brings us to the heart of God and the heart of God touches our hearts and makes them skip

a beat. The command of the Lord in today's rst reading from Deuteronomy isn't so much a command as aninvitation. The Book of the Law, the Torah, is an invitation to return to the heart of God, to see as God sees.

Moses tells the people that the journey into the Heart of God is not a lone one, not above the sky or across thesea but swells within our own hearts; that God meets us where we are, right here, right now.

We humans seem to love to complicate things, even life itself. Over the millennia, the Torah became a list of do’sand don’ts rather than a life-giving Word bringing unity and peace. The Torah, the Law, became an end in itselfrather than a pathway into the very heart of God. Over millennia, we collectively forgot who our neighbor is.

Seems that we'd rather belong to religions and nations, political parties and special interest groups than tobelong to the human race as neighbors and friends living out the dream God has for all of us.

Such is the dilemma the scholar of the Law has in today's Gospel. All goes well, “love the Lord your God,: check,

“with all your heart,” check, “all your being,” check, “all your strength,” check, “and your neighbor as yourself.”Ah — there's the rub. Jesus not only wants to have us see as God sees, but to do as God does.

Jesus goes on to describe the plight of the man who fell into the hands of robbers who left him half dead. Thescholar sees that the one who treated him with mercy did the right thing and Jesus tells him to “go and do

likewise." We don't know if he did or not, but hopefully he did go

and do likewise.

I took the photo at the left two weeks ago in the downtown SeattleMall. Does your heart skip a beat when you view this? Are you

motivated to take action? Are we willing to see to it that we provide

shelter and food so our brothers and sisters don't have to sleep on

the street or in a shopping mall? If we are moved by images such as

these, we are on the path to seeing as God sees and doing as God

goes. “Go and do likewise.”
