FIRST LESSON: Acts 10:34–43 Pg. 1710 in the red pew Bible Peter crosses the immense religious and social boundary that separates Jews from Gentiles in order to proclaim the good news of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, so that God’s forgiveness in Jesus’ name would reach out to the Gentiles just as it had to Jews.

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusa-lem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him re-ceives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. PSALMODY (from Psalm 118) Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation (LBW #367) SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 15:1–11 Pg. 1789 in the red pew Bible

The core of the Christian faith and Paul’s preaching is the death and resur-rection of Jesus Christ. As the crucified and risen Christ appeared to the earliest of his followers, so we experience the presence of the risen Lord in the preaching of this faith.

1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

4

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he ap-peared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apos-tle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11 Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *GOSPEL PROCESSIONAL Easter Song (Hear the Bells Ringing) by Herring and Wilson

Alleluia Choir *P: The Holy Gospel according to John, the 20th chapter. *C: Glory to you, O Lord. *GOSPEL: John 20:1–18 Pg. 1685 in the red pew Bible

This morning began with confusion: the stone was moved and the tomb was empty. Disciples arrive, then angels, and finally Jesus him-self. Out of the confusion, hope emerges, and a weeping woman be-comes the first to confess her faith in the risen Lord.

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.

5

8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes, 11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15 “Woman,” he said, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her. *P: The Gospel of the Lord. *C: Praise to you, O Christ. *GOSPEL RECESSIONAL Easter Song (Hear the Bells Ringing) by Herring and Wilson

*HYMN OF THE DAY Come, Christians, Join to Sing (insert) *NICENE CREED (LBW Pg. 64)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

*PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH L: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people

according to their needs. A brief silence.

Then each petition ends: “Lord, in your mercy,” Response: “hear our prayer.” P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your

mercy; through your Son, our risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. C: Amen.

7

*SHARING OF THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.

(As God has blessed us with peace, hope & joy—we gladly share those blessings with one another.)

*THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (LBW Pg. 68, sung) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right and salutary... we praise your name and join their un-

ending hymn: C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow’r and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

*WORDS OF INSTITUTION (LBW Pg. 69, #31) P: Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Through Abraham you promised to bless all nations. You rescued Israel, your chosen people. Through the prophets you renewed your promise; and, at this end of all the ages, you sent your Son, who in words and deeds proclaimed your kingdom and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: Therefore, gracious Father, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered for us. And, believing the witness of his resurrection, we await his coming in power to share with us the great and promised feast. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P: Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, the spirit of our Lord and of his resurrection, that we who receive the Lord's body and blood may live to the praise of your glory and receive our inheritance with all your saints in light. C: Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. P: Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all.

9

*THE LORD'S PRAYER (LBW Pg. 71) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Missions April Mission of the Month: Lutheran Bible Translators During the month of April, Calvary lifts up & supports Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT). LBT is a long-time partner of our congregation, working to bring God’s word in the appropriate vernacular to smaller, remote populations. The translators and their families live for extended periods amongst the people, learning the language and gathering the information needed for the translation & publication of the Bible. Your financial contributions to Calvary’s Mission of the Month during April go to sup-port this important work of spreading God’s word to the world. Use your weekly of-fering envelopes or a white pew envelope to contribute and note “Mission of the Month” on your check and/or envelope. Guest Speaker from LBT Next weekend we welcome guest speaker, Jonathan Burmeister (along with his wife, Nancy), representing Lutheran Bible Translators. Jonathan and Nancy have been members of Wycliffe Bible Translators and associate members of Lutheran Bible Trans-lators since 1971.
