European Societies (ES) is the official, peer reviewed journal of the European Sociological Association (ESA). It is developed as an international platform for sociological discourse on European developments. European Societies' editor-in-chief and the ESA Research Network Sociology of Religion invite the submission of abstracts for a special issue on The Social Dynamics of Religion in the Public Domain. This issue intends to continue the latest debates on the contentious role of religion in the public sphere of contemporary European societies from various sociological perspectives. Beyond debates on secularization, scholars have begun to analyze the shared perception of religion's reemergence in the public domain as a social phenomenon that is intertwined with politics, law, culture and society. As a result of that reemergence, religion has assumed various new roles in the social organization and the political life of many European countries that are fostered by diverse social dynamics and the particular influence of the growing transnationalization of European societies. This pluralization of religious reality leads to the question of how sociological conceptions of European societies can account for and analyze the social dynamics and functions of religion in the present. Understanding the social dynamics of religion is vital in contexts where the reappearance of religion in the public domain is a socially, politically, legally and morally contested issue. ‘Post-secular’ societies, Jurgen Habermas argued, have to adapt themselves to the social reality of religious groups, organizations and individuals in the public sphere and to their involvement in civic debates about the problems of late modernity, i.e. individual rights in relation to the right of religious freedom, neo-liberalism and social security as well as questions of belonging and post-national identity. Religion has now become an influential factor, not only in the political sphere, but rather in the public domain at large (e.g. Calhoun). Against this background, European Societies and the ESA Research Network Sociology of Religion call for papers on The Social Dynamics of Religion in the Public Domain. We encourage papers that are both theoretically sophisticated and focused, and empirically grounded, ranging from broad comparative studies to micro-level examinations of religion ‘on the ground.’ Those who are presenting papers at the mid-term conference in Belfast, 3-5 September 2014, on Religion in the Public Domain, are especially encouraged to submit an abstract. Theoretically, we are interested in approaches that critically address modern distinctions between the public and the private, the secular and the religious, the profane and the sacred. We invite research on the (socio-historical) shaping of such categories – in the social sciences and modern cultures alike – and its relation to social conflict and cultural power (e.g. Assad). We also invite research on the social effects of religion in selected contexts – whether

ostensibly secular or post-secular – where religious beliefs and practices contribute to the masking or unmasking of power structures and social stratification. Furthermore, we welcome submissions that research the following topics:

− The social dynamics, functions and significance of religion in the social, institutional and public domains, i.e. the role of Islamic, Christian or spiritual beliefs, practices and experiences in social life, politics, voting, banking, business life and other domains of activity.

− The role of religious-spiritual narratives in popular culture, i.e. their meanings, commercial and commodified manifestations in books, music, film, computer games, advertising, marketing and branding.

− The role of the media, i.e. the way in which religion is framed on television, radio and in newspapers, and the appropriation and use of (social) media by religious individuals, groups and organizations.

− Social conflicts between secular and religious groups and public debates about integration, religious fundamentalism, terrorism, women’s rights, headscarves, abortion and other issues of that nature.

− The public value of the sociology of religion, including how insights about the social dynamics and functions of religion can be of significance to policy makers and grassroots activists.

Instructions to authors and deadlines: Please submit an outline abstract of about 500 words (plus bibliographical references; in .doc and .pdf format) by 15 November 2014 to the editor-in-chief ([email protected]) as well as to both guest editors ([email protected] and [email protected]) including the following: • Title of proposed paper • Contributing author/s and contact details • Significance and interest of the research question • Key concepts, research framework, aim and methodology For abstracts initially accepted, full papers (under 7,500 words) are to be submitted by 30 June 2015. The papers will be reviewed in line with European Societies' guidelines. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. Submitted papers will go through the journal’s usual peer-review process. Authors will not receive any payment. Conference Announcement

The Decline of the Middle Classes

Around the World?

Segovia, Spain

September 28–30, 2014

Conference website

In the wake of the 2008/2009 financial crisis have come increasing concerns that we may be witnessing the decline of the middle classes around the world. The forces underlying this uneasiness, of course, were at work before the crisis, but it seems to have hastened and aggravated their impact. Is the decades-long period of relative middle-class affluence at an end? Or will current difficulties pass as national economies strengthen?

In order to explore these and related issues, the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), the University of Maryland School of Public Policy (UMD), and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) will hold a conference in Segovia, Spain, September 29–30, 2014. An opening reception will take place the evening of September 28.

The conference is designed to attract a worldwide audience, including academics and professionals from universities, think tanks, government agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector.

The Worlds of Violence

9th Pan-European Conference on International Relations

Wednesday 23-Saturday 26 September 2015, Giardini N axos, Sicily, Italy

Organised by the European International Studies Association and the University of Catania

Violence is a prominent feature of world politics, and has been the subject of sustained reflection in specific sub-fields within and beyond international studies literatures. Indeed, the range of scholarly discourses on ‘violence’ shows it to be both a multifaceted object of study and an appealing concept. Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic expansion of these diverse approaches to violence, which have enriched our understanding of the many ways wherein violence can be invoked and used to illuminate global phenomena and processes, ranging from military conflict and post-conflict peacebuilding, to accumulation by dispossession, terrorism, environmental destruction, human rights abuses, popular uprisings, and resistance movements. This scholarship is itself only a fraction of a much wider body of work that inscribes violence in a multitude of societal and global structures and dynamics. ‘Violence’ is no longer restricted to physical or psychological characteristics and relations, but extends to all aspects of our biological and social life – from ‘natural’ to ‘military’, ‘political’, ‘economic’, ‘cultural’, ‘racial’, ‘gendered’, ‘epistemic’, ‘ethical’, and ‘symbolic’ violence.

Page 8: Bulletin August 2014 - ssa-rss.ru · Gdansk, March 6- 7, 2015. - Call for Papers: 4th European User Conference - Microdata from Eurostat, SILC, LFS, AES, ... organizations and individuals

8

We are interested in rethinking and interrogating violence as an object and a concept, in light of this proliferation of meanings and problematics across the social and human sciences, but also in parallel with the development of complementary or antagonistic worldviews grounded in discourses on ‘norms’, ‘international society’, ‘social order’, or ‘civilizing process’ (among others). We invite contributions that can speak to the ontological, interdisciplinary, political, and epistemic dimensions and implications of research on violence.

While participants are especially invited to respond to the conference theme, proposals on all aspects of the worlds of international relations will be considered, and accordingly we invite contributions from within all areas of International Studies scholarship (such as, but not only, International Relations, Global Political Economy, Political Theory, policy-oriented research). Moreover, given the rich and innovative debates taking place across the social and human sciences, we welcome sections that draw on cross-disciplinary and collaborative scholarship beyond International Studies.

We are also keen to include reflexive interventions that address how violence and/or violence-based narratives impact on scholarship itself as a social practice, and on academic disciplines as social orders.

Call for Section Chairs

The academic programme for the conference will be organised in the usual format of sections composed of panels. A section may consist of either five or ten 105-minute panel sessions during the programme. Each 105-minute panel should comprise five papers plus chair and/or discussant.

The tasks for a section chair include: - proposing a section around a theme; populating some panels at the proposal stage; maintaining a balance between established and emerging scholars, and postgraduate students;

- composing the rest of the section’s programme, by selecting papers that were proposed in response to the call for papers;

- identifying panel chairs and discussants;

- taking overall responsibility for the actual execution of their section’s contribution to the conference programme.

Proposals for sections should include:

1) Name, institutional affiliation and email address of the proposed section chair(s) – maximum two chairs per section.

2) Proposed section title and summary of its theme(s) and rationale(s) (no more than 250 words). Please state here if your proposed section is to contain 5 or 10 panels.

3) Tentative indication of possible panels. We do not require a full list of panels, but we would like at least 3 suggested themes for a 5-panel proposal and 6 suggested themes for a 10-panel proposal, which would show what the Section convenor(s) hope would be covered by the section at the conference. Section convenors, if they wish, can also substantiate these themes with suggested paper titles or roundtable participants.

Proposals should be submitted to [email protected]

The closing date for section proposals is Sunday 12 October 2014.

After the authors of accepted section proposals have been notified, a call for papers and panel proposals will be issued in December 2014.

The International Conference on Gender, Culture& Migration (http://migrationnavigator.org/info/?page_id=1105) is a meeting organized under the auspices of Polish-Norwegian consortium PAR MIGRATION NAVIGATOR, coordinated by University of Gdańsk.

This conference is an annual event organized under the main theme of Woman in culture that brings together researchers from multiple disciplines (psychology, sociology, gender studies) along with gender equality practitioners and policy makers, to consider how gender issues are represented worldwide.

The conference themes covers issues relating to gender issues, with special emphasis on social and cultural changes influencing gender equality. Gender (in)equality is established and maintained at different but intersecting levels, from the more proximal family level to the more distal society level. At the cultural level it can be well-observed in the rituals and practices of individuals and couples who struggle to achieve work-life balance. Certain societal facts and psychological phenomena influence men’s and women’s adopted work-life balance strategies and how gender equality is maintained or not maintained within theirfamily and professional life. The goal of the meeting is to analyse how the content of gender roles and egalitarian norms vary across cultures and which cultural and contextual factors lead to support of gender equality. The focal questions of the conference concern the following issues: How can social change in values and attitudes toward gender equality be fostered? What is the role of the culture in forming gender equality within couples, families, organizations and societies as a whole? And finally, how can we investigate the mutual influences of individual motivations and cultural change, when individuals/couples migrate to more egalitarian countries than their home country?

We welcome individual papers, posters as well as whole symposiums from both researchers and practitioners from different disciplines doing cultural and cross-cultural research relating to gender issues, culture and migration (psychology, sociology, education, gender studies).

Call for contributions to the following edited book

Working title:

“Workplace integration, Healthand the Welfare State . International perspectives”

Editors Dr. Thomas Geisen, Professor of Workplace Integration and Disability Management, University of

Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, School of Social Work, Switzerland Dr. Henry Harder, Professor, School of Health Sciences, University of Northern British Columbia,

Canada Benedikt Hassler,University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, School of

Social Work, Switzerland We invite you to participate in this proposed book which seeks to discuss different forms and concepts of work integration in the international context. General Parameters The editors seek contributions which describe the development of activities and programs of workplace integration and health in a specific country with a special emphasis on the relevance of welfare state issues. As well, comparisons of different forms of workplace integration between countries and theoretical approaches to workplace integrationand health are most welcomed. The gathering of different perspectivesand concepts of workplace integration and health in one book will

help to picture better understanding of workplace integration in different countries which will facilitate further research in this area. Background Workplace integration and health are the most important factors for social integration in modern societies. Research in this area is highly relevant and up-to-date due to the rising numbers of ill or injuredworking-age people. Furthermore, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities from 2006 reinforces the rights of persons with disabilities to work on an equal basis with others. However, there exist various forms and concepts of workplace integration in social sciences as well as in social policy around the world. Some people perceive sheltered employment as a form of workplace integration; others only considerintegration into the first labour market as workplace integration. OECD comparisons show that different forms of workplace integration (for example sheltered employment, supported employment, social firms, or integration in private companies) appear in quite diverse magnitude in developed economies. Nevertheless, research on workplace integration froman international perspective is still rare. This book presents theoretical issues of work integration; it seeks to collect empirical data of workplace integration (with regard to their different forms and objectives) in various countries; it seeks to explain different notions of workplace integration; and it discusses specific problems in the process of work integration. Content Description With this book the editors hopeto improve knowledge about different forms and concepts of workplace integration in various countries. Thisinternational perspective will help to understand the connectivity of workplace integration with the welfare state and social security systems. The international picture of different practices will establish a new view on advantages and drawbacks of specific forms of integration into the labour market. The proposed chapter will deal with the following subjects:

− Theoretical view on work integration − Empirical view on work integration in various countries (a historical perspective is highly

welcome). − Global perspectives and comparisons of work integration between countries − Disability Management − Perspectives on the relevance of indigenous, minority and migration issues in work integration

and reintegration − Mental health and mental illness in the workplace

The First Annual Amartya Sen Prize Contest

For essays on the theme of illicit financial flows and their implications for global poverty and inequality

November 7-9, 2014, Yale University, New Haven, CT

Submission Deadline: October 5, 2014

The Yale Global Justice Program, Global Financial Integrity, and Academics Stand Against Poverty invite submissions of original essays on illicit financial flows to the first annual Amartya Sen Prize Competition. All prizes are named in honor of Amartya Sen, whose work has shown how the rigor of economic thinking can be brought to bear on normative and practical questions of great human significance.

Illicit financial flows are international movements of funds that have been illegally earned or are being illegally transferred or utilized. Such flows may involve proceeds of corruption or other crimes – or may be associated with efforts to evade corporate or individual taxation. According to Global Financial Integrity, developing countries are especially damaged by illicit financial outflows, losing some $6 trillion in the decade ending in 2011 and about $1 trillion per annum more recently. Illicit financial flows are thought to perpetuate poverty and forestall equitable development by depriving societies of tax revenue and investment capital that could be used to promote economic growth and alleviate deprivation. The 2014 Amartya Sen Prize Competition is soliciting original essays of ca. 7,000 to 9,000 words on how illicit financial flows relate to global poverty and inequality. Such essays could be empirical, analyzing for instance the distributional impact of illicit financial flows on the evolution of poverty or inequality. They could be normative, reflecting perhaps on who bears what responsibilities for the adverse effects of illicit financial outflows from the developing world. Or they might be practical, defending for example a feasible and politically realistic reform idea that would help curtail such outflows. The best entries will be presented at an international conference, November 7-9, 2014, at Yale University and subsequently published in a special issue of a prominent journal. In addition, at least two of the winning essays will receive a monetary award: a first prize of $5,000 and a second prize of $3,000. Professor Sen hopes to join us for the conference presentations.
