2 Easter Show
2
Well another great show is over. Attendance was only slightly down on last year which was a record. What a great team effort with so many members contributing to the success.
Even the rain held off. And more champion trophies for our members: Noela and Italo Frizzo took out Champion Species, Champion Specimen and Reserve Champion. Congratulations Noela and Italo John and Beverly won Champion Foliage for their Tassel Fern. Congratulations J&B.
And it was pleasing to see a good number of plants benched by our new growers. See all the results at pages 13-15 There are really too many people to thank individually and to attempt this would risk forgetting someone
and causing offence. However, Maureen has particularly asked me to thank all her team who worked so hard during the show preparing and serving hundreds of morning and afternoon teas and meals for the judges and others, and all
those who baked beforehand and donated items or money for the multitude of catering items required for an event like this. Maureen tells me she even managed to persuade one of our male members to join the team. Well done John.
Let me also give you some idea of all the other functions that had to be covered and thereby hopefully thank most of those involved and congratulate them on a job well done: Pre-show publicity and organising of vendors, signs, layout, fencing, marquees, raffle selling etc etc
Set up and pull down in both halls and area between( for 2 days before and one after).
Manning during the show of raffle booths, craft stall, entrance, administration (incl database), Treasury
duties, security, cleaning and bins, potting demos, spot raffles, plant sales, supervision of both halls,
parking etc etc
We also owe a debt of gratitude to our wonderful sponsors: Mitre10 who very generously donated two wheelbarrows full of goodies. Wyatt Roy M.P. who made a monetary donation.
Our Show Marshall Alan Savage from Glasshouse stepped in fairly late in the piece and did a wonderful job. Many thanks Alan.
Thanks also to : The orchid judges from STOCQ and the foliage judges from Banksia Beach Garden Club.
The Boy Scouts who were on hand again to run the BBQ and keep the premises secure at night. And all our wonderful and loyal vendors.
A big thank you to all from your President and the Committee.

4 Cultural Meeting

It was great to see so many novice plants on the bench. Probably as many as I’ve seen and one sign of a healthy growing club.
A few announcements were made at the meeting: The Council has kindly granted our request for an all weather path between The Orchid House and the Indoor Bowls Hall (which proved a Godsend at our show). John Hopgood has constructed a light stand for better viewing of the champion orchids at our shows
and Judges’ Choices at our meetings. We have received a donation of new chairs for the hall. We have acquired two new large marquees for use at our shows and these were supplied at a very reasonable price.
The guest speaker was Ann Sales who gave us some really good practical advice from her experi-ence on how to grow show standard orchids. She then went on to win Champion of the Show at our
Easter Show. Congratulations Ann.

6 March New Growers and Other News
New Growers Unfortunately the Editor was unable to attend this meeting as he was attending the STOCQ meeting in Gympie but from reports received it seems it was well attended. Discussion centred on the forthcoming show and preparation of plants for benching. Judges’ Choice went to Sharry Baby owned by John Grubb.

R.I.P. Ethel Mills
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of one of our past members, Ethel Mills.
Ethel joined the society in 1995 and was greatly involved until the last couple of years. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this sad time.
Message from Maureen our Providore
“I would like to thank all the girls & guys who assisted in both kitchens, from the very
successful Thursday night meal, right through the weekend until the closing on Saturday. We had heaps of people washing dishes, cleaning up, baking & bagging all sorts of cakes & biscuits, making sandwiches, coffee & tea. Thanks to Bob Lloyd & John Grubb who made sure the bins were emptied.
The numerous great comments we had from members of other orchid societies & the public were all due to the hard work put in by all those who helped. I’m sure new friendships were made in the kitchens. “

Cultural tip of Month Taken from John Atkins Autumn Cultivation Notes on
our website.
CYMBIDIUMS These are coming into their peak flow-
ering season and in fact many of my miniatures,
practically those with “Sarah Jean” in their parentage
are finished for another year. Many plants new
growths are still developing. Now is the time to be
busy with your cymbidium collection removing dead
leaves and the remains of old leaves or dehusking
older bulbs as these are a harbour for snails and have
them come out and find those developing spikes be-
fore you do. Remove any weeds and turn your pots so
that spikes develop a straight, upward habit rather
than twisting around for the sun. At this time of year
I like to top-dress my plants with a dry mix of equal
parts blood and bone and sulphate of potash and wa-
ter in with an application of Seasol. Watering should
only be carried out when the mix starts to appear a
little dry. Should you experience above average rain-
fall, and this seems to be the case in many parts it
may be a good preventive measure to give all your
plants a good drenching of ANTI-ROT or FONGA1UD
at the rate recommended on the packet and repeat
every two weeks whilst the rainy weather is about to
guard against bulb and root rot, these can even be
applied whilst it is raining, it is also a good idea to
incorporate a wetting agent to improve the absorp-
tion. Also be on the lookout for spider mites under the
foliage and treat with white oil or eco-oil as a safe
method of control.
I like to pot up young seedlings now so they are es-
tablished before the summer heat and after potting
give a good soaking with a mix of liquid seaweed and
fish emulsion. I also give a monthly application of sul-
phate of magnesium or “Epsom Salts” as it is com-
monly known; I use this on all my seedlings. Start
staking spikes once they are long enough.
New Members A big BIOS welcome to the following new members: Michael & Yvonne Crowley (Sandstone Point), Marcia & Bob Saunders (Sandstone Point), Loraine Blaney (Beachmere), Jim Westhead (Sandstone Point), Anita Cooper (Burpengary),
Jack and Dawn Worley (Banksia Beach), Fred and Noela Logan (Bongaree).
Library Corner
Congratulations to the show committee for
another successful show despite the weather. Many old magazines which had been donated to the club library were distributed to orchid
enthusiasts who attended the show. Although these magazines were very old there was lots of interesting and still relevant
information in them. The library has all current
orchid magazines available for anyone wishing to borrow them. Stephanie

The humour of Red Skelton
1. Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, good food and companionship. She goes on Tuesdays; I go on Fridays..
2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in California , and mine is in Texas .. 3. I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back..
4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said. So I suggested the kitchen..
5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.. 6. My wife told me the car wasn't running well because there was water in the carburettor. I asked where the car was. She told me, "In the lake."..
7. She got a mud pack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.. 9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling, "Am I too late for the garbage?" The driver said, "No, jump in!"..
10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce..
Two beat cops call the crime branch on telephone to give feed back on a homicide case....
Cop : Hello. Crime branch? CB : Yes
Cop : This is Sgt John. We have a case here. A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just mopped. CB : Have you arrested the woman?
Cop : No sir. The floor is still wet.
Does this sound familiar?
MONROE, Mich. -
For 50 years, Ron Ciesinski has been doing his part to help mother nature and preserve some of her most delicate and beautiful flowers. As the owner of Taylor Orchids near Monroe he purchased his first orchid at a neighbourhood market. It started a life-long love affair.
But Ciesinski is packing them up and packing them in. He's in his 80s, his bones hurt, he’s tired, his wife is sick, and growing nature's most delicate prize is hard work and time con-suming -- no one wants to do it. So he’s calling it quits. Time can grow a beautiful flower, but it bows the legs and hurts the back of humans, and so this human daddy must leave
his flower children behind.
