Danielle Nicolas School Secretary who brings this Bulletin together each week had told me of the hundreds of photos we have from Sunday. Once you start browsing through them it is a great temptation to keep going. One thing strikes you about each and every shot of our students battling it out in their green, gold, red and blue coloured tops. In every photo is captured an absolute and complete focus and absorption in the moment: on the faces of every competitor there is the sense of striving to win, the spirit inspiring each team, as well as the humour which accompanies some of the moves in the ball games. There is hardly a posed shot among the hundreds whether as groups or as individuals. Thanks to our staff and parent photographers. If anyone has a movie film we would love to get a copy. While the weather kept us guessing about whether we would survive the forecast heat, it was very kind down at Somerton and so we were able to see the program through to completion. As you know we enjoyed the splendid upgrading of the new facilities at Sacred Heart College. Sincere thanks to Mr Steve Byrne Principal of Sacred Heart College, Peter Mc Cabe, Operations Manager and Liam Crocker for their welcome and hospitality. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SIENA TEAM. They have been waiting for this day and no other team would begrudge them the fantastic result of their efforts as they took off the Guerin House Shield as winners on the day. Congratulations to GUZMAN on winning the Discipline Award and to AQUINAS on the House Spirit Award and to SIENA and COLUMBA on the House March. All results are printed inside this newsletter. LITERACY Comprehension Skill: PredictingMany of the comprehension strategies we wish to encourage overlap with one another. We are going to take a brief look at the strategy of predicting. This process is closely related to making connections and questioning which we have covered in previous bulletin issues. Making predictions helps students stay engaged with the text and is a way for them to monitor their understanding. It will also help them to have a deeper understanding of the text and help them retain this for longer. When we make predictions, we are not just guessing. Readers use information from graphics, text and personal experiences to anticipate what will be read and to actively adjust comprehension while reading. This is often subconscious for us but we can make this process more explicit for our children.First of all, model how to look at the text and visuals. Start with the front cover and title and make a prediction about the content. Pause to review your prediction and see if you would like to revise it in the light of what you have read.As you read, continue to make and review predictions, using the illustrations for support. For older children, you could record these predictions, making notes of the clues and evidence which led them to make or review their prediction. To develop this skill, you don’t always have to read narratives. You can use films. Make a prediction from the title and picture on the box. Then pause the film to review the predictions. Try to encourage your child to give reasons for her predictions as this will encourage a deeper engagement with the text.

Primary News from Ms. Cate O’Leary Primary School Coordinator

“Don’t let failure be an ending. Make it a beginning.”

Sunday’s sports day was a great success. We celebrated the achievements of our mighty athletes. We watched

students participate actively in their events, work together as a team, and show resilience if things didn’t go to plan. We are grateful to the many parents who helped with scoring, judging and encouragement on the day. The positive feedback from many of you was welcomed as our staff work very hard in the lead up to Sports Day. It doesn’t just happen! We also thank Mrs Richter and Mrs Heggs for organising many of the behind the scene tasks. Well done to all teams and congratulations to the Siena team.

All students in Year 3 are asked to be at friday morning mass this week by 8:10. There will be tea and coffee for parents in the Red Room after Mass.

Week 10 assembly is on Tuesday at 2:30 pm in the Hall. It will be hosted by the Year 2 Class. All welcome.

St. Dominic’s will be offering auskick football coaching clinics here for R-6 students in Term 2. We are excited about having SANFL support the program at our school for our students. Enrolment forms are available from our Primary office. The first session will begin Week 2, Monday the 8th of May after school, on our oval 3:20- 4:20pm and conclude Monday Week 9. You will need to register online.

The Year 3 Class had a fantastic HARMONY DAY. A huge thank you to Karen, Sue, Leanne, Loan and Nicole for generously donating their time, cultural expertise and lots of food for us to enjoy! The girls created Greek Easter Eggs and Sand Mandalas, tasted some Aussie foods such as damper and Vegemite, tried a Vietnamese sweet, did some Lebanese dancing and had their names written in Arabic. It was a really enjoyable day. Oh, and did I mention we ate LOTS!!! Here are some of the girl’s comments about the activities we did –

Jelena – We did Lebanese dancing and we also tasted food and it was very yummyZuhuur – I really liked the Vietnamese cake that Loan madeLauren – Leanne and Sue taught us some Lebanese dancing and we got to see where Lebanon is on the mapJudy – We made Mandalas out of sand. We all had different patterns.Lysha – With Nicole there was an Australian tasting plate. I loved the damperLily – My favourite activity was the Greek Easter with Karen. We made Greek Easter eggs and coloured a bookmark. I loved Karen’s biscuits. They were very tasty

Why do we celebrate Harmony Day – Ameesha – It doesn’t matter what your skin colour is, we all belong hereAlissa – It is always good to make everyone feel welcomeSophie – Everyone can celebrate because everyone is allowed to be friendsMontana – It’s a day to bring peace to the world. Everyone belongs no matter what country they are from. God loves each and every one of usVictoria – Harmony day is meant to celebrate all the different people from different cultures of the earth

Do you want to hear what the Year 5 class has been up to? On Friday 24th March, the Year 5 class walked the perilous journey to the Migration Museum. We stopped along the way at a peaceful park to eat our yummy recess and play some games on the grassy hill. When we arrived at the museum we were split in to two groups. One group learnt about a school that the early English settlers built for the Kaurna people to learn English, while the other group learnt about the 350 different aboriginal tribes that once occupied the land and how now only 50 remain. In the Museum’s courtyard, there were a variety of bricks that had the names of different Free Settlers. The earliest arrival in SA was in 1836. Next to the courtyard stood a building that once housed children with disabilities and orphans. It was a very informative excursion.

Sports Day turned out to be a great day and the St Dominic’s school community joined together to make it another great

community event at the beautiful upgraded Sacred Heart complex. An amazing day that is completely prepared and run by volunteers. We were very grateful to all of the volunteers who assisted on the day to make it such a success.Catering for the day ran smoothly thanks to the tremendous effort of the convenors, who provided sustenance for the community with the assistance of many enthusiastic helpers. Thank you to all who donated their time to help out on stalls on Sunday and in the days and hours prior to the big day. Also a big thank you to the parents and businesses who donated the goods for use on the day. Well done to those who came early to set up, stayed late to clean up, or who spent hours slaving over a hot BBQ, cutting up the fruit for fruit salad, preparing the Vietnamese salads, making coffees or serving the large crowd that was present. Your time and team spirit made all the difference. To the convenors of our stalls, we extend our special thanks for donating hours of your time on the day, and in many instances, many hours in the lead-up to the event. Each year we put aside some time to reflect on the previous year, in a bid to consider any worthwhile enhancements that might result in the event being just that little bit better, but most of all to ensure that it continues to be an enjoyable time for all. A great deal of thought and effort is contributed by many parents and staff and we would welcome any new feedback either by contacting us direct or by your attendance at the next P&F Meeting.

On behalf of the P&F, we would like to extend our gratitude of thanks

to the fantastic office staff, Loretta, Danielle, Lina, Helen and Noreen for help with bulletin notices, the raffle, sorting messages, collating the rosters, and putting up with our many phone calls and interruptions: To Gavin & Michael, the school’s behind-the-scenes workers, thank you for your help in packing & unpacking the big trailer with all the many items required for the day.

We would also like to acknowledge Sr. Jillian and Muriel Noujaim for all their support, along with all the Sports Department staff for organising a very successful day.

An extra special mention goes to Kathryn Hudson, who spent many hours gathering our provisions together in preparation for the big day, and has the mammoth task of sorting through what has been returned. Kathryn defused countless potential emergencies on the day and took copious notes on how to do things better next year.To anyone e lse we may have accidentally forgotten we thank you!

Huge Thanks to the BBQ A-TeamWhat a fantastic day we had on Sunday but of course this success would not be possible without the amazing support we receive from the dedicated parents and helpers who gave us their valuable time on the day. There are too many to mention in person, but please accept our most sincere gratitude for your time and effort – you are all superstars! Thank you to those parents who stayed longer than allocated or just came up and lent a hand when they saw we were busy.

Many thanks once again Mark Hawkins & Scott Coombe

Fruit Salad StallThe fresh fruit and yoghurt continues to be a crowd pleaser and we sold out by early afternoon. As always, we must acknowledge and thank the generous donation of the entire fruit supply by the Schinella Family of Adelaide Fresh Fruiterers, Prospect. To those with weary feet, and tired arms and legs at the end of the day your help was so much appreciated to get everything back the way it was, and everything back to school. Vocare Leadership DayOn the Wednesday the 15th of March, we (Year 12 SRC Executive) went to Sacred Heart College for the Vocare Leadership Day run by the Catholic Office for Youth and Young Adults (COYYA). Vocare was the theme of the day which is a Latin word and it means ‘to call’, and is the base word for ‘vocation’.

We started by getting to know the student leaders from many other colleges, then broke off into smaller groups to talk about what leadership truly is, and what it means to us in a Christian perspective. We were also lucky enough to hear from Peter, one of the COYYA representatives, who shared his stories about moving to Australia and deciding on what he wanted to do with his life, making the day engaging and intimate.

Archbishop Wilson also joined us for lunch, discussing the important connection between leadership and faith. Later we broke off into our school groups to discuss how we could translate what we had learnt into our own school; coming back with some great ideas about Gala Day for later in the year.

This was a memonrable experience, giving all that went a clear insight as to what it means to be a Christian Leader, and how to play to your strengths when leading.

Harmony DayMany s tudents ce lebrated Harmony Day (21 March) by placing their coloured hand print to show their support for the cultural diversity that is prevalent in and outside our school community. These hand prints show that we all bring something different and beautiful to the College and it is these unique qualities that provide a rich space for learning. This event was organised by our Student Represent Council (SRC). The theme for 2017 is ‘everyone belongs’ and the community at St Dominic’s Priory College certainly identifies strongly with this theme.
