Transcript of BULLETIN - Amazon S3 · Max Balbot Clara Berns Joseph Kodish ... Bella Zetzer David Sapp June 18 -...
This month we
celebrate one of the
Torah’s major holidays
– Shavuot. Shavuot
commemorates
the historical event of Matan Torah,
the revelation at Mt. Sinai and the
giving/receiving of the Ten Command-
ments and the Torah. According to
Jewish tradition, every Jew who has
lived or will live experiences Matan
Torah and stood at Sinai along with our
ancient ancestors.
While this was a monumental event
in Jewish history many of us were alive
to recall another major historical event
that occurred 49 years ago in June of
1967. It is celebrated each year in Israel
as Yom Yerushalayim-Jerusalem Day.
This day in Israel is a national holiday
commemorating the reunification of
the city of Jerusalem during the Six-Day
War.
After the 1948 War of Independ-
ence, the city was divided between Israel
and Jordan. The old city with the Kotel
and the Jewish quarter was off limits to
the Jewish world. Jewish residents
were forced to leave. One half of the
synagogues were demolished and the
Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives
was desecrated and plundered and its
tombstones used as paving stones and
building material.
That all changed forever on June 7,
1967, when Jerusalem was reunited
This year we are
celebrating Beth El’s
70 years and have just
done this officially on
May 20 along with the
installation of our new officers and
board members. Looking back we have
had years of dedicated leadership that
have brought us to the present. Working
with Marty and the members of the
Executive Committee and Board has
been rewarding over the last two years,
and Marty deserves our praise and
thanks for his exceptional stewardship
through our continuing transitions
beginning with exceptional leadership of
Gary and Andrea as we have moved to
our new home. There are so many who
have contributed to our transitions, and
we cannot thank them enough.
We continue to be in transition as
we begin the process of the search for
our new Rabbi. Jerry Nelson and I will
be co-chairing the Advisory Committee
that will facilitate the planning,
development and process for selecting
our next Rabbi. We are very fortunate
that Marty Belsky and Marvin Shapiro
have agreed to be co-chairs of our
Search Committee that will be
responsible for conducting the search
process. It is our expectation that the
Board of Trustees will approve the
selection of our new congregational
leader. If you want to be involved in the
search process, we are now asking for
volunteers to fill many different roles.

Search Update The Advisory Committee for the Rabbi
Search has met three times with our two
Search Committee Co-chairs, Marty Belsky
and Marvin Shapiro. Marty and Marvin have
interviewed representatives of the Rabbinical
Assembly, the successful Search Committee
for Temple Israel’s new Rabbi, and the
Search Committee for Cleveland’s Shaarey
Tikvah.
The co-chairs, with the help of the Advisory
Committee, have almost completed the
Questionnaire (application) to the Rabbinical
Assembly and will be putting together a
subcommittee structure. The document will
propose a method of staff assistance for the
search, developing a budget for the search, setting up timing and a method
for application reviews, screening, and
visits. It is expected that the process will
continue over the summer, with more intense
effort in the early fall, and a proposed
candidate in January or February.

under Jewish sovereignty for the first time
in 2000 years. United Jerusalem became
the undivided capital of modern Israel and
for the Jewish people. General Moshe
Dayan wrote at that time, “We have
returned to the holiest of our places, never
to part from it again.” On May 12, 1968,
Israel declared 28 Iyar (this year on
Sunday, June 5) as a new Jewish holiday,
Yom Yerushalayim.
While mostly observed in Israel, some
congregations in the Diaspora will recite
Hallel and other special prayers to
highlight our special city of Jerusalem.
Each year this modern day holiday
should be a reminder to every Jew who stood/stands/ will stand at Sinai that
Jerusalem was and is the eternal
capital of Israel and of the Jewish
People. It has been so for 3000 years.
As the prophets Micah and Isaiah
declare in our Tanach, “Kee mitziyon
tatzay Torah ud’var Adonai mee-
yerushalayim”-Torah shall come from
Zion. The word of the Lord from
Jerusalem.”
May the holy city of Jerusalem
continue to thrive and prosper.
Shalom and Blessings,
Rabbi Stephen Grundfast
This will be one of the most important contributions that anyone can
make to Beth El’s future. Please contact us to join in the enterprise.
One of our first steps in the process was participating in focus
groups to discuss key issues that were important to our congregation.
The results are being used to fill out the congregational questionnaire
that will be sent to the Rabbinical Assembly as part of the search
process. The development of this document is now taking place and
will be shared with the Board and committees when it is completed.
There will be an opportunity for review and comment. Mindy Block
Gordon, District Kehilla Relationship Manager, Central District
United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, is serving as a consultant
and will come to Akron to meet with the Steering Committee to assist
us as we develop our process We will publish progress reports in
future issues of the Bulletin as we move ahead. We expect that we
will submit our application in June.
On a personal note, Ronni and I with our children, Anthony and
Randy Rose, moved to Akron in 1971 when I joined The University
of Akron. Our youngest son, George, was born in Akron. We have
been members of Beth El since that time and were welcomed into the
Beth El family. I have been involved in board activities for most of
these years. My three children have all had Bar or Bat Mitzvahs here.
All my children have attended Camp Ramah with the help of Beth El.
My granddaughter has had her Bat Mitzvah at Beth El and two of my
grandchildren have attended Camp Ramah with help from Beth El.
Our synagogue has been an important part of my family’s life. In
my role as President, I hope that I can contribute to providing the
same opportunity for others to feel involved and part of the Beth El
family. Feel free to contact me at any time if you have suggestions to
facilitate our present and future.
My best,
Harvey

Our Hebrew School year has come to a close. During the year, we focused on prayer, Hebrew, current events, and values. This year also had some new program opportunities with other synagogues such as Havdalah night in November, Hanukkah at Home Depot in December, and Skyzone in May. I wish you all a great summer and thank you for sharing your children with me!
