Rotary Informer: Michelle Kendall Michelle spoke about the Rotary Club of Honolulu which has been around since 1915. They meet regularly at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and have been instrumental in making a number of changes to Rotary – including a redesign of the ‘wheel’ – back in 1923. They currently have over 200 members and have sponsored some 10 other clubs, including the Esso Club in Russia.

Michelle is hoping to visit the Rotary Club of Honolulu, when the 3 Kendalls’ head there later this year.

Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians – to be

held in April 2017.

Our aim is to raise sufficient funds to

send an Interplast team overseas.

GUEST SPEAKER TODAY: - Peter Warren Topic: Mukti Mission in India

Peter is the current WA and NT Director for the Mukti Mission in India. Founded by Pandita Ramabai in the late 1800’s it was created to assist women and girls create lives for themselves that got them out of the poverty cycle. The statistics about women and girls are somewhat frightening: - Most of the world’s poor are – women and children - 70% of all the world’ poor are – women and children - One in 5 girls in developing countries don’t complete

Grade 6 - One third of girls in developing countries marry before

they are 18, and one in 9 are married before they are 15. - Girls living in poor households are almost twice as likely

to marry before 18 than girls in higher income families. - In almost every case child brides are trapped in poverty. - Women work two-thirds of all the working hours;

produce half of the world’s food and earn 10% of the world’s income.

Pandita wanted something better for women and children so set up Mukti because she believed that women should be given an equal chance to get ahead in life. Today they provide facilities and resources so that women who need it can be rescued from poverty or oppression. They can engage in the many and varied educational activities to restore their self worth; and then are supported to be released back into their local community where they are self-sufficient and can live confident and independent lives.
