UNFORGIVABLEA patient did in fact die as a result of the Letaba Hospital’s generator running out of diesel during a power outage in June. This was confi rmed by National Health Minister dr Aaron Motsoaledi on Tuesday.

Limpopo’s MEC for Health, Ms Phophi Ramathuba, vehe-mently denied this and her spokesperson at one stage even said that post-mortem results will show that the death (also of another patient) couldn’t have been as a result of a pow-er outage.Bulletin reported in detail on the incident on 18 June

Towards the end of 2014 members of the National Council of Provinces visited the hospital and stated that they were not happy with what they found and saw there.

Dr Motsoaledi also confi rmed some other disturbing facts about the situation at Letaba. He has (at least) taken strong action and suspended the hospital manager, Mr P T Matod-zi. Some of the fi ndings that the Health Minister confi rmed were:

• Matodzi went home on the night when the power outage occurred. “A hospital manager may not do so,” Motsoaledi stated in a press conference.

• The hospital’s fi nancial manager used his own money to buy diesel for the emergency generator. Matodzi was warned a number of times to buy diesel for the generator, but he failed to do so.

• The number of vacancies at Letaba is unacceptable and immediate action must be taken to fi ll the vacancies.

A number of other questions have remained unanswered since 18 June’s tragic incident. A senior Police offi cer con-

fi rmed then that an in-quest had been requested and promised to “look into the matter and report back” to us. This, however, never happened.

We asked the Minister’s spokesperson on Wednesday for a copy of his announce-ment about the situation at the hospital, but he said it couldn’t be done and put the phone down without saying good-bye!

Joe Dreyer Just spoke to George from the company that owns the truck and they have just contacted the driver

and he is turning around. They were not aware of this and have sorted it out. Thank you to the community who are our eyes and ears.

Sue Ettmayr This happened yester-day Joe. You mean he’s not returning up the Pass? I question why the truck

driver was on the Kloof in the first place. We, as a community, have to stop it. Thank you for phoning that number.

Liz Mcgaffin Sue...we must bear in mind that most of the trucks use GPS. ..and if not from here, the signs to re-

direct these poor drivers are shocking! The odd few are not enough. As the R71 is now a nation-al Rd. ...the really need to be INUNDATING the way with signage. Our yuppie crowd in their gti’s are more of a threat. .. they have no regard for speed, solid lines ...blind corners etc etc....signage needs to display...tractors...heavy duty timber trucks etc etc

rakke vol is. Charl Hattingh Daar is mos groot ken-nisgewings langs die pad. As jy jou gps aansit sê hy duidelik jy moet alle pad-

Homo imperfectusVlieg

Last Thursday a Facebook user posted this image on the Bulletin’s Facebook group and wrote:“Heavy vehicles continue to use the Magoebaskloof Pass. It is illegal and trucks are supposed to use

the Mooketsi road where there is a weigh bridge. This out-of-town truck was on the Kloof at 15:00 on Thursday last week. These truckers are a danger to themselves and fellow motorists. Report trucks that

in hul plastiekskuilings.

What makes us see redTraffi c jams, queue jumpers and people who think rules don’t apply to them have emerged among the list of thirty things that gets South Africans’ blood boiling, according to a just-released health survey.

More than 1 300 South Africans were polled by the country’s leading heart and stroke treatment provider, Pharma Dynamics, to divulge the things that most get their goat, with taxi drivers topping the list.

People cutt ing in line, folk who ignore the rules, forgett ing to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and load-shedding complete SA’s top fi ve rage-inducing annoyances.

Commuting in SA evidently also shoots our blood pressure through the roof, espe-cially when motorists and/or cyclists jump red traffi c lights, when busses or trains don’t stick to schedules and get cancelled at the last minute, drivers ignoring zebra crossings or when Cocky Joes rip through suburbia or housing estates at supersonic speeds.

Other temper-triggers highlighted in Pharma Dynamics’ poll include anti-social behaviour such as when someone pays more att ention to their electronic device(s) than to you, along with having to go through endless automated phone options and then being kept on hold.

Money also leaves us fuming with high pet-rol prices, having to pay a fee for withdraw-ing money from an ATM, paying for parking when you only intend to pop in to the shops

quickly and seeing salaries disappear in fees and taxes all on the list.

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson of Pharma Dynamic said they commissioned the poll as a way to get South Africans to take their heart-health more seriously.

“With 6,3 million South Africans living with high blood pressure, SA has one of the high-est rates of hypertension in the world. Many however remain unaware of their condition because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Hypertension is also a precursor and leading cause behind other life-threaten-ing conditions such as stroke and heart disease.

“Stressful situations can cause your blood pressure to spike temporarily, but too much stress could lead to high blood pressure in the long-run. Doing activities that can help you manage your stress and improve your health can make a long-term diff erence in lowering blood pressure,” she says.

SA’s top thirty annoyances according to the survey are:

According to the survey, almost a third of South Africans are easily provoked with partners, call centre agents and fellow mo-torists most likely to be on the receiving end of their anger.

Twenty percent of respondents experience daily stress and aggravation from everyday irritations and frustrations, and almost 40% admitt ed that these usually cause them stress long aft er the incident.

Van Aswegen says if you’re tired, stressed or simply at the end of your tether, it doesn’t take much to make your blood boil.

“Try to take short breaks during times of the day that tend to be very stressful, identify what specifi cally makes you angry and think of possible solutions, humour can also help to diff use tension, practice relaxation skills especially when your temper fl ares and ex-ercise too is a great way to help reduce stress and feelings of frustration.

“Statistics show that about 130 heart att acks and 240 strokes occur daily in SA, which means that ten people will suff er a stroke and fi ve will have a heart att ack every hour. We would like to call on all South Africans to have their blood pressure tested at least an-nually,” she says.

Tzaneen business couple Schalk and Riana Prinsloo have added a delightful fl air to their expanding business enterprise. This past week at an intimate af-fair, the couple unveiled Scaria’s Coff ee Shop and mini car wash to the Tzaneen public. Scaria’s opened its doors in mid August without much celebration and Monday night served as the offi -cial launch party.

The Prinsloo’s also used the event as a platform to inform those in att endance of their oth-er business enterprises which includes Ranie’s Call Centre and Centridge Properties. Guests were welcomed with scrumptious snacks while traditional

dancers provided entertainment. The beef potjie being prepared on the open fl ames

next to the veranda provided an enticing aroma which ac-centuated the Prinsloo’s aim of providing Tzaneen with an escape from the hustle of everyday business.

“We came up with the idea to give the community in the surrounding business cen-tre a place to escape to dur-ing their lunch time, or even bring their clients for busi-ness lunches or meetings. It is nice and private and we

have a fantastic chef all the way from Zambia cooking up the most delightful luncheons.

We invite everyone to come and experience our relaxed atmosphere.”

The coff ee shop itself is hidden away be-hind the Key Shop in Skirving Street which adds to the feeling of your own cozy hide-away. With seating inside and outdoors, Sca-ria’s provides shelter from the elements all year round. Att ached to the shop is a mini car wash which can be utilized at your conveni-ence while you enjoy your vetkoek, pancakes or sandwiches off the lunch menu.

For the avid reader and art lover this hidden gem off ers a book exchange, board gaming table which includes chess and draughts and has a selection of art on display to feast your eyes on. Accommodating and effi cient, the staff at Scaria’s will make you feel at home, and if you are unable to leave the offi ce, they

will bring that feeling to you. “We make daily deliveries on order to many of the businesses in this area and in fact, we have become rath-er well-known because of this service.”

Att endees at the event were mightily im-pressed. The only damper on the night was the failure by Tzaneen Mayor Dikeledi Mme-tle to honour her invitation and join in the festivities, this despite several unanswered phone calls to her before the start of the event.

SKOLE NUUS

Forty day countdown… Merensky High School’s staff and Gr 8 pupils surprised the matric class of 2015 with a delicious treat for their 40 days countdown. Kesia Pohl delivered a short address, thanking the matrics on behalf of the Gr 8’s for their compassion and care, and the example they set to the new Plasies. Doran Kleynhans said a prayer motivating the Gr 12’s to stay true to themselves, even in the big unknown world after school, be-cause each one is special and has a specific calling. The headmaster, Mr Mag-nus Steyn, encouraged the pupils to make the best of their last forty days at Merensky and thanked them for their contribution thus far. The matrics then walked past a guard of honour formed bythe Gr 8’s, to be spoiled at the school’s restaurant with authentic American food, Yankees and soda — also celebrating the famous Elvis hit “Forty Days”. Lize-Mari Jansen, Naledi Mailula, Dimple Kala and Andrea Devenish in front, and Chris Poutney, Asad Patel, Nicolo Recht, Thapiwa Gwanzwa and Kayla Crous were some of the matrics who enjoyed the forty days celebration.

People Living with Cancer, oorhandig.

Jeugskou was ‘n sukses

Middel: Jaco Venter, Marco Strydom, Theo van der Merwe (kaptein), William Coleman, me. Tritech, the national science and technology fair, was once again presented at Merensky High School and 203 pupls from Gre 7 to Gr 12, competed with a total of 160 projects. Tzaneen pupils had the opportunity to match their entries with the best from the different regions, be-ing Nelspruit, Bosveld and Polokwane.

Merensky had the most entries, namely 32 projects pre-

sented by 44 pupils. Their projects did not disappoint, as five were named category winners. Three pupils came second in their categories, and two came third. All in all Plasie Einsteins won fourteen gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals, meaning every entry claimed a prize. The following Plasies won gold: Ivan Botha, Alicia Prins-loo, Chris Bill, Michaela Viljoen, Elzette van Dyk, Marlu McLean, Ulrich Koster, Juan-Jacques Moller, Kesia Pohl, Jenna Devenish, Tahiyya Moosa, Michelle Stevens, Carmen Nagel, Anri McLean, Valeriia Avdysh, Precious Nkuna and Ezri Hugo.

It was not all serious hard work, as the participants enjoyed a “wi-Sci” activity at Faerie Glen. Regardless of the cold and rainy conditions, they had to protect themselves against the elements and wild animals with potato guns, “ketties”, bow and arrows and knives. They also had to provide fire with-out matches and pan for gold in the mountain stream.

Representatives from universities like Witwatersrand, Tuks and NWU were impressed with the standard of the competition.

SKOLE NUUS

The three South Af-rican winners of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, all three of them from Math-lari High School, came back from Swe-den recently. They represented SA at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) during the World Wa-ter Week, where they competed against pu-pils from more than thirty countries.

This follows them winning the annual SA Youth Water Prize at the Water and San-itation Youth Sum-mit. The winners, Mashele Mmabatho Camilla, Makhumbi-la Hlengi Hulani and Nukeri Hlonipho Ed-gar, all from Mathlari High School at Shik-wambani Village, Mhalaba Cross, Tzaneen, went to Sweden to showcase how they use cellular phones to control a water flow system.

They were inspired by the con-tinuous water pipe bursts in their village and put together a water conservation project. This pro-ject, if implemented, can help the Mopani District Municipality as the region’s water service au-thority with distribution of equal amounts of water per household and also help to fix water leaks, thus minimizing the big water losses.

By winning the SAYWP they qualified for bursaries for careers in the water sector of R15 000 to-wards tertiary education at the university of their choice, a sub-sistence allowance of R2 000, a cash price of R8 000 and a laptop.

“We want to encourage the youth to emulate us and come up with other methods of saving wa-ter because water does not have

a substitute. They should not be afraid of hard work because at the end it pays. The youth should join this competition and help the Department of Water and Sanita-tion to solve water challenges in the country,” said one of the three members of the group.

“We are very excited for such a technological invention from our school and the learners have now placed our school in the world map and we thank their coordi-nator,” said Mr Tom Tom Hiliza, the headmaster of the school.

These young science inventers were determined to bring home the first prize but a pupil from the USA won the 2015 Stockholm Junior Water Prize by inventing a filter that through nanotechnol-ogy removes toxic heavy metals from electronic waste in drinking water and industrial water — a method that could revolutionize the future of how we treat water.

SMITADVISEURS

The assisted suicide debate was elevated in the news earlier this year when Robin Stran-sham-Ford — a terminally ill cancer patient — won a ruling in the Pretoria High Court, granting him permission to take his own life with the aid of a doctor. The ruling stated that the doctor who would assist Stransham-Ford would not be criminally charged for the act. Ironically, Stransham-Ford passed away hours before the ruling.

While this ground-breaking case raises many ethical and legal questions, one less-talked about potential implication is that of life cover:

• Will legal cases of assisted suicide diff er to the current life cover clauses on “regular” suicide?

• Will life cover policies have to change in the future to take cases of legal assisted suicide into account?

Sandy Govender, Head of Group Insurance at Momentum, agreed to shed some light on this issue.

Current life cover clauses regarding “regular” suicide

“In the insurance world under group arrange-ments there is something called free cover lim-it (FCL),” explains Govender.

“Individuals in the group automatically qual-ify for cover up to the FCL. Where cover is compulsory, for example in group life cover through an employer, there are no exclusions on suicide up to the FCL. For individuals taking out cover above the FCL, suicide will only be covered up to the FCL until the full underwrit-ing is approved for the higher amount, after which it will be fully covered.”

Govender further explains that for individual policies where clients take out the policy on a voluntary basis, their suicide is not covered for an initial period from the commencement of the cover, ranging from 12 to 24 months, from the inception of the policy. Otherwise the full amount is paid.

“Suicide is only a risk to insurers if their client took out the policy knowing that once they committed suicide their bene ciaries would be covered. This is actually a rarity and the ex-clusion period would reduce any potential risk here.”

Assisted suicide vs “regular” suicide

According to Govender, in terms of life cover, assisted suicide is no di erent to the current life cover clauses on suicide.

“In most instances of medically assisted sui-cide the client is terminally ill and will usually not have much longer to live. In this regard, they would in any case become a claim on our books in the near future. So assisted suicide is actually a lower risk than a healthy person committing suicide. Most life insurance poli-cies have the option to take out a terminally ill cover which allows for your life insurance bene t to be paid while the client is alive if the doctors says that the person has less than a certain period to live (typically 12 months). So this further reinforces why assisted suicide is not really an issue.”

“As we don’t see assisted suicide as a high risk, it is unlikely that life policies will change in the near future in this regard.”

Being able to feed his family from what he earns from using a bicycle to sell vegetables ranging from tomatoes, onions, spinach, cabbage, carrots, beetroot and green pep-pers is very important to Esack Sekgobela (63), who resides at Khopo in Thabina vil-lage. The father of fi ve and two grandchil-dren batt led to fi nd a job until he had an idea of selling veggies.

“Aft er I realised that I was not going to fi nd a job, I then decided to buy veggies and use my bicycle to sell them, I knew if I did I would be able to earn some money instead

of just walking the streets doing nothing,” he explained. Sekgobela said his business had been going for 10 years and he was happy about how much it had grown.

“Customers always appreciate to see me passing by, since I save them time to go to town or plaza to buy veggies and I am grate-ful to them for being loyal to me since I start-ed selling. With the income I generate, I am able to buy groceries for my family and we don’t go to bed hungry,” Sekgobela said.

Well-known retired principal of the Marumofase Full Service School in Lenyenye for the past 27 years (and 37 years as a teacher) now heads the Mmathakana Family Gardening Pro-ject together with his elder brother Andries Ramodike. They call it “Phe-la o lema” meaning Live and Plough.

The Mmathakana project is run in the heart of Thabina in Moime vil-lage, fi ve kilometres from Lenyenye and where Ramodike was born.

The project aims to prevent malnutri-tion and other diseases through selling fresh vegetables to the people of Mo-ime as well as neighbouring citizens, to encourage the younger generation

to produce fresh vegetables from their homes and to develop business skills of young people in the village through selling their own fresh produce.

Because of the water crisis in the area, the garden relies heavily on the new borehole which was drilled last month. The Garden comprises of many diff erent kinds of veggies, in-cluding tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, onion and beetroot. However, they also plan to plant green peppers, car-rots and green beans.

Mmathakana is the fi rst gardening project in the village. “We want resi-dents of Moime to look at the garden as a resource,” Ramodike said. The

garden would be a great way for the community to learn about the impor-tance of nutritious foods and service in their community, he said.

The bad news at the beginning of the Magoebaskloof Spring Fair was that the constant drizzle meant that few people headed down the dirt road outside Haenertsburg to visit the famous Cheerio Gardens. The good news is that the blossoms had not yet reached their magnifi cent blaze of colours but, weather per-

mitting, should be at their most glo-rious during this weekend.

Feast your eyes on these magnif-icent old established gardens with the colours of the azaleas, crab apple blossoms and cherry tree blossoms, refl ected in the dam. Thereafter browse through the many stalls at the Magoebaskloof Hotel and at the

Haenertsburg Village Hall. There’s plenty to eat and drink at the count-less eateries and live music too.

The wedding expo held at Cheerio Gardens this past weekend show-cased who and what Cheerio Gar-dens off ers for special occasions.

Dis nou maar eenmaal so dat daar min dinge so gevaarlik is as ‘n vernederde Bokspan!

Tora! Tora! Tora!

As tradition dictates, the annual in-ter-house gala at Merensky High School took the form of a heated challenge be-tween hostel learners and those who live in town or the surrounding areas. The town boys put a score of 263 on the board, with the hostel boys scoring 155. The fi nal score was Hostel 364 and Town 416. Junior victor ludorum went to Jaco Jacques Joubert, and the jun-ior victrix ludorum to Megan-Mae van der Nest. Senior victor ludorum was Ivan Botha and the senior victrix ludorum Lean-die Toerien. Seen in full action is Ivan, and Leandi is seen aft er another successful fi nal.
