Sunday, October 25, 2015 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel today, Jesus heals the blind man. Perhaps I hear that Gospel a little bit differently than most people. Both my parents were blind at the end of their lives. My dad lost most of his eyesight because of a stroke nine years before his death. My mom lost most of her sight because of glaucoma a couple of years before her death. I was blessed to learn a lot about disabilities through their experience. I never really thought of them as people with limited sight. No, most importantly, they were my parents and I loved them and they loved me. That was what was important in our relationship. Oh, and by the way, they needed some help with some of their daily activities because they couldn’t see very well. Their limited sight was a complete afterthought. I find that to be a good goal when I move among all kinds of people with disabilities. Whenever we see a person primarily in the context of their “not being able to do something,” well then, as the expression goes, “you’re doing it wrong.” People are first and foremost lovable and capable of loving. We need to shape our (religious) imaginations in such a way that what-‐ someone-‐else-‐can’t-‐do is an afterthought. Anthony Andreottola, LMHC, is the director of the Fr. Mychal Judge Center for Recovery here at the Shrine. Anthony is extremely well liked among the staff and the friars here. He is sensible, insightful and funny. Anthony has extremely limited eyesight. This past week he made a trip to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to have an initial procedure to improve his sight. It is enough of an innovative, high tech, and experiment procedure that HBO is doing a documentary about Anthony’s story. In fact, HBO was at the Shrine last Sunday doing some filming. We will let you know more details about the documentary as we learn them. In the meantime, we can marvel at the timing of the appearance of this Gospel story to this faith community during this particular week!
