SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY AUGUST 19, 201220th Sunday in Ordinary Time 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary

Welcome

Call to Worship: Psalm 95: 1-2, Page 550, O.T., NRSV

*Hymn: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name! #142

Prayer of Confession: God of love, it is your will that we should love you with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, but we are not sufficient for these things. We confess that our affections continually turn away from you: from freedom to slavery, from compassion to indifference, from fullness to emptiness. Have mercy on us. Order our lives by your holy Word, and make your commandments the joy of our hearts. Conform us to the image of your loving Son, Jesus, that we may be His ambassadors before the world to your glory. Amen.

Silent Confession

Confessional Response: Kyrie Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison. Translation: Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord have mercy.

Assurance of Pardon: 2 Corinthians 5: 20-21, Page 181, N.T., NRSV

*Congregational Response to God’s Grace: Gloria Patri #579 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Greeting and Connecting Children through Grade 5 are invited to come forward to receive a Children’s Worship Packet designed especially to involve them in worship.

Anthem: Greater Love by John Ireland

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Greater Love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Who His own Self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness.

Ye are wash'd. Ye are sanctified, ye are justified, in the Name of the Lord Jesus. You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,

that ye should show forth the praises of Him Who hath call'd you out of darkness into His marvelous light. I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Old Testament Reading: Esther 4: 1-17, Page 446, O.T., NRSV

New Testament Reading: John 15: 1-17, Page 109, N.T., NRSV

The Preached Word: Permission to Rest Jim Wood

Offertory: Recitative and Aria But Who May Abide The Day of His Coming? from "Messiah" by G.F. Handel

Soloist: Jermaine Woodard

Recitative: Thus saith the Lord, the Lord of Hosts; Yet once, a little while, and I will shake the heav'ns and the earth, the sea and the dry land; and the desire of all nations shall come; the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, ev'n the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

Aria: But who may abide the day of his coming and who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner's fire.

*Doxology and Prayer of Dedication Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him, all creatures here below, Praise Him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles‘ Creed Hymnal, Page 14 I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Concerns and Prayers of Our Church Family

The Lord’s Prayer (in unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and power, and glory, forever.
