From the Personal RepresentativeBrethren, our society has changed a great deal

since our Masonic Brothers helped to write the Constitution for this great country. A lot of prog-ress and changes have been made over the years but what hasn’t changed is our Masonic Fraternity. Unfortunately our membership is declining due to the loss of our aging Brothers and we are not get-ting new members to replace the loss. Brethren we need your help in obtaining new members in the Blue Lodges and in Scottish Rite. We have a Web page and we are on Facebook and both have good

information about Masonry. However, personal contact with an individual is far more impressive. There are many 3rd° Masons that have not become Scottish Rite Masons, if you know someone make a contact and tell them about Scottish Rite. I realize the economy is not the best here in the Val-ley but in the north and south of the State Scottish Rite is doing very well recruiting new members. Membership is the backbone of Masonry and your dues provide the funds to maintain our buildings and help to keep our Philanthropy alive. We thank you for your generous financial support which is needed to fulfill the budget and help keep the Child Language Clinic doors open and a special thanks for the Legacy donations for the children in your name.

Our new degrees have been improved and are now shorter and it is a shame that we don’t have sideliners to witness the degrees with new mem-bers. Our Director, Mike Nella and his Co-Chairman Mike Hall have done an excellent job by making the degrees more interesting.

What are we missing and what can we do differently to attract new members? I would like every member to give thought to this issue and contact me or e-mail me at ([email protected]), we need your help.

Alan Miller does a great job in preparing our dinner before the stat-ed meeting each month. He and his Banquet Committee and provide hors d’oeuvres for the half hour of socializing before the dinner and the Stated Meeting. Our next Stated Dinner will be September 16. If you haven’t at-tended Scottish Rite recently come to our Stated Dinner and join in the fel-lowship, I think you will enjoy the company. Just call the office and make a reservation (268-9631). I hope to see you soon.

Fraternally,Richard A. Paris 33°, P.R.

From the Wise Master

From the Venerable MasterBrethren, summer time is here and many of

our brothers will be leaving the area for their vacations.

To the brethren who will be leaving, we say, “We will miss you over the summer time and look forward to your return to the Valley.” For the brothers who are on “staycations” make plans to attend one of our travel meetings. There is plenty of good fellowship either around the dinner table or after our meetings. I would like to challenge all members of the Valley to attend at least one meeting during the balance of 2013. I feel confident that you will enjoy yourself.

Fraternally,Curtis C. Jack, 32° K.C.C.H.Venerable Master Lodge of Perfection

In trying to communicate the degrees of the Chapter of Rose Croix in some of my monthly articles, I now attempt the “Knight of the East and West” or the Seventeenth Degree. The Chapter of Rose Croix degrees are those degrees inclusive of the Fifteenth Degree, “Knight of the East, of the Sword or of the Eagle”, through the “Knight Rose Croix” the Eighteenth Degree. All of the degree work in the Masonic move-ment is presented to convey a deeper mean-ing than just the allegory would suggest. The study of each degree is done in an effort to gain a greater enlightenment and provide tools that will help in the pursuit of a more rewarding and noble life.

The Ill. Albert Pike, 33o suggests that, unlike other degrees in Masonry, the Seventeenth Degree is the first of the Philosophical Degrees and the beginning of our instruction in the inner mysteries of Masonry. In several pages of esoteric writing of the Ill. Pike, he explains in great detail how over the many years reli-gions of the East and the West have exchanged ideas and concepts of individual Philosophy into specific individual religions. He then explains how those ef-forts were then captured in our Masonic teachings. He states that some of these old faiths have faded into oblivion, while many of their parts have survived in Masonry; this degree is called the Knights of the East and West, because these doctrines and teachings have come from both the East of Orient and the Occi-

Brethren of the Consistory; Most of the programs of the Consistory

have been completed and were all a success. With the summer season upon us and with

all the activities it brings us, I know how busy your personal lives are. However, never lose sight of Freemasonry as it should always be the guide of your conduct.

Please keep the Rite in your thoughts and continue to seek out Masons who may wish fur-ther light by becoming a Scottish Rite Mason. If you will bring a potential candidate to a Stat-ed meeting dinner, I will host both of you as my guest. That’s a bargain at twice the price!

I wish you a wonderful summer and a very happy Fourth of July.

Brethren,Now is the time to seek out new members

and invite them to join us in the pursuit of more Knowledge in Masonry.

On 15 July, The Consistory will advance during our visit to Tulare Lodge. All Scot-tish Rite Masons and Consistory members are invited to join us for dinner at 6 pm, and the meeting at 7 pm. Our stated meeting in August will be in Merced. The Scottish Rite Visitation schedule calls for a visit to Welcome Lodge 255 in Lemoore on Thursday, 5 September 2013. The Worshipful Master is Pat Cerdenola. On Wednesday, 4 October, we will visit Fresno

RE-TOOLFreemasonry is a repository of ancient teachings. Our Craft has great les-

sons to teach. As it is with the Gnostic teachings, secret knowledge must be gained by each person’s individual efforts. Gnosis is a thought process that fits well with Freemasonry.

All the secret teachings of Freemasonry, veiled behind its symbolisms, al-legorical stories and rituals are available for each of us to discover. There are no undiscoverable secrets, but they are not intended to be laid out in open for anyone to misinterpret. Craft Masonry is as much about the TRUTH as it is BROTHERLY LOVE and RELIEF. The real essence of the search for Masonic Light is contained in how we reach real truth and avoid becoming seduced into accepting misinformation and deception.

In our every day Masonic activities we have a tendency of pushing aside the search for True Masonic Light in favor of performing rituals for ritual sake, memorize with no deep understanding of what we are memorizing and philan-thropic endeavors; all which gives our heart a warm fuzzy feeling! And if that is not enough distractions from our core teachings; we thrown in a big portion of lodge management and its entanglements and time consuming administration there of. The net result is no time to actually read “A Bridge to Light,” to ad-vance through the Master Craftsman I and II Courses. No time to read, reflect and ponder upon the great teachings veiled behind our symbolisms, allegorical stories and rituals.

The future of Freemasonry lies with the young men of our modern society. These potential candidates are searching for answers, they are impatient. If we as a fraternity do not illuminate that pathway for their travels in search of spiri-tual and philosophical discoveries we as a unique fraternal organization will disappear!

FREEMASONRY NEEDS TO RE-TOOLBrother John L. Tracy

TCSRC NewsSummer is here and so is the heat. We will be dark in July but expect

us to alive and kicking in August. The August 16 meeting will be held at Ryan’s Restaurant at 3103 S Mooney Blvd in Visalia at 1830.

The Scottish Rite Travel Meeting will be held at the Tulare Masonic Temple at 6:00 p.m. on July 15.

Hope to see all the South Valley Scottish Rite Masons at these meetings.James Sperlich

AMBASSADOR’S MESSAGE - July 2013The phrase “To err is human” is as true today as when it was penned by English poet

Alexander Pope in the 18th century. When we make mistakes, we are each reminded that we are not perfect. Yet, error is a vital part of how we learn to change. Furthermore, when we recognize how we think and feel about our mistakes, we learn more about who we really are.

When we err, we need to have the self-confidence and honesty to admit our mistakes, rather than blaming others, rationalizing our errors or denying them. We should take responsibility for our actions - mistakes included - and not shrug them off. We must also learn to forgive ourselves and use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.

As we learn to practice acceptance of and grow from our mistakes, we should help our fellow Scottish Rite Masons to do the same. When a Brother errs, we can model kindness, compassion and forgiveness. We can be slow to anger and do our best to counsel our Brothers privately, rather than publicly correcting, reprimanding or embarrassing them.

As Scottish Rite Masons we need to remember that each of us is on a lifelong journey of self-discovery to become a better man. Words to live by:

“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.” - SophoclesDurward C. Ayre

Tom’s Talks”There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in

doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”

Parents may come to the Center interested in their child’s success but not commit-ted to their success. They have not yet understood that success comes from committed parenting. The Center has the opportunity to model and teach commitment to a child’s success by accepting no excuses for what they say they can’t do. It is important to for them to learn the difference between “I can’t” and “I won’t”. We frequently self handicap by taking the things we do not want to do by making them a thing we cannot do. We confuse and deceive ourselves into thinking we cannot do something when really it is an excuse for not wanting to.

Michael is a great example for an “excuse for everything”. He can give elaborate reasons and stories why he cannot do something at school. The reality is, he has such a short attention span he never really finishes anything. The Center began working on finishing simple and short tasks so Michael could develop the confidence that he could finish what we asked. He learned he could finish longer and longer tasks. He discovered it took more effort to make an excuse than to do the task. After learning that excuses limit results Michael’s school performance was no longer limited by his attention deficit but by his commitment to learn.

Fishing Derby Thank You!Shaver Lake is beautiful this time of year. You put the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Clinic Fishing Derby there and it doesn’t get any better than that. There were 99 people in attendance, both Fisher people and those who just for lunch. There were 19 children fishing and all had a great time. The biggest fish was 4.49 lbs. caught by an adult. Our cooks, our helpers, all did a great job. Thanks to all ! Thank you also to the Friends of the Center for doing their raffle. We had a great time and hope you can join us next year.

Scottish Rite HistoryJack v. Farson, 33º

The First Supreme Council: Charleston, 1801The 25-degree Order of the Royal Secret came into being, it proved

popular. these french high degrees, unlike the english York Rite, were spread by traveling Inspectors who conferred them for a fee. It wasn’t necessary to wait for enough masons in a town to receive the high de-grees somewhere else and for them to apply for a charter; the itinerant in-spector could take care of everything as soon as he arrived. Eight bodies of the Royal Secret were formed in America before 1800, from New Or-leans to Albany. The weakness of the Order proved to be the unchecked system of inspectors General.

each inspector General could confer the degrees on master masons, establish local bodies, and create new Inspectors—all for an appropriate fee. There were no guidelines on cost, no limitation on numbers, and no restriction on how many more inspectors an inspector could create. by 1800 there were over 80 Inspectors General, and the system was moving toward chaos.

Then on May 31, 1801, the first Supreme Council of the Thirty-third Degree, the mother Council of the world, declared its existence with a motto of “Ordo ab Chao” (Order from Chaos). It announced a new 33-de-gree system of high degrees that incorporated all 25 of the Order of the Royal Secret, and added eight more, including that of 33°, Sovereign Grand inspector General. this new organization declared control of high-degree masonry in America.

the new Supreme Council had a written constitution and a plan for organizing and managing the bodies under its control. The problem it faced was how to rein in the roving inspectors General. the solution was shrewd and depended upon convincing the inspectors to voluntarily yield allegiance to the Supreme Council. Any Inspector of the 25° would be giv-en authority to confer up to the 32° (the extra seven degrees would make his product more attractive), if he turned in his old patent and agreed to follow the rules of the Supreme Council. This strategy was reasonably successful, and independent inspectors General soon disappeared.
