CONGRATULATIONS TO
BULLER HIGH SCHOOL’S
2019 DUX
and PROXIME ACCESSIT
Lottie Stevenson Buller High School Dux
Bayleh Jenkins-Kirkwood Buller High School Proxime Accessit
On Tuesday 5 November a full NBS Theatre was treated to an evening of celebration and entertainment. Student achievement and success were the features of the evening, with an impressive array of awards on offer. I wish to acknowledge all of the scholarship providers from within the Buller district; without your support many of our deserving students would struggle to fund their dreams beyond school. Congratulations to our DUX Lottie Stevenson and Proxime
Accessit Bayleh Jenkins-Kirkwood for their achievements over the year, plus the many other students identified during the evening. This evening is also the time that we farewell our 2019 Head students, Prefect Leaders, Josh Roche, Bayleh Jenkins-Kirkwood and Anika James and welcome in the 2020 leaders, Head Boy Declan Ginley, Deputy Oliver Hamilton and Head Girl Tessa Syron with her Deputy Tara Shepherd. Firstly, a big thank you to our 2019 leaders; all have done a magnificent job and secondly welcome to the new leaders; I look forward to seeing what you bring to the table in 2020. Earlier in the day many of our year 13 students graduated from high school. It is always quite an emotional day as they wear their uniform for the last time and contemplate their next steps in life’s journey. I know that most have a clear vision about what is ahead, and I wish them all the best. No doubt seniors are now all studying to complete the academic year in style. Many have been in school taking advantage of the teachers one last time as they prepare for the exams. Their success or otherwise is not a fluke and they should justifiably bask in any success that comes their way. A reminder to students that school is their job, and part time work needs to be a second priority until exams are complete. Students deserve the success they work for and our teachers expect them to put in the work prior and on exam day to demonstrate what they have learnt over the year. I look forward to reading of their successes and achievements in January. For the junior students, they also have exams looming in week 6 and they should be revising to ensure that they are prepared for these exams. For the year 10 students, these exams provide them and us a clear indication of their preparedness for year 11 in 2020. These students have also had the opportunity to begin working towards NCEA in some classes. This extension opportunity gives them exposure to the demands of NCEA and also demonstrates an understanding of the requirements at this level. During week 9 our junior school will be taking part in an activity week. Some students will be heading away to Boyle River for a camp, while others will be enjoying a raft of other learning activities. This year, we have many exciting choices that students have made. Staff look forward to this time as an opportunity to connect and build relationships with a new group of students. It will be an exciting week! I look forward to seeing parents at the Junior Prizegiving on Thursday 12 December. This is the final showpiece for our junior school for the year. I look forward to seeing parents and caregivers at this ceremony as we celebrate the year for these students.

Senior Awards
eVolocity
Congratulations. At the start of November, the team went to Nelson for the Aquabots competition. We had two teams competing, and both their aquabots were operational underwater. Team Don’t Worry About It came 3
rd equal overall for seniors,
and 3rd
in the presentation and team Hogwarts came 1
st in the quiz. It was
the biggest Aquabots competition yet, and a great experience for the junior students from Buller High School. Photos:https://photos.app.goo.gl/XvkHVhF22Fe1ExaT7
The effects of climate change made headlines this year and solutions to reduce it have been proposed, including reducing the amount of fossil fuels used by switching to electric vehicles. eVolocity is an engineering competition for young people to investigate electric vehicles, with high school and university students designing, building and competing against each other. Our team attended the regional finals in Christchurch in early November with the vehicle they designed and built, largely from recycled metals. The competition at the Christchurch Kart Club included a drag race, a slalom street course, a stop:start course and a long distance challenge. Hi Tech Engineering companies, universities and engineers from ‘the forces’ attended, providing expertise, keynote speeches, career guidance and demonstrations of electric motorcycles and racing cars. The hot sunny weather made for a great day of fun with a serious message. Photos: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1fz6Ll91o7Sko94V3bWbTMD6azrz-iWVW
