7TH GRADE NEWS

Social Studies: Our 7th graders are working diligently
to wrap up the first quarter by successfully completing
their first quarterly essay. As we leave the Middle Ages
behind and look forward to studying the changes that
bring about the Industrial Revolution, World Wars I
and II and the formation of the UN.
Language Arts: 7th grade Language Arts classes have
been working on our extended novel unit. Students be-
gan the unit with a "Book Tasting" where they complet-
ed a menu of activities to guide them towards their nov-
el selections. They were given the choice between
"Schooled" or "Drums, Girls, + Dangerous Pie."
Science: We would like to take this opportunity to
thank Mr. Harper, our long-term sub for science for
getting our classes off to a great start this quarter. We
appreciate his dedication and hard work the past nine
weeks. A job well done! And…….we would like to wel-
come back Mrs. Mason, our Olympian science teacher
who has been out on leave the first quarter. We are ex-
cited to have her return to us, and we know the stu-
dents are as well!
Math :As we move in to the second marking period, Math 7 will continue Topic 2 Analyze and Use Propor-tional Relationships. Students are recognizing and rep-resenting proportional relationships and using them to solve problems. In Math 7/8, students will begin Topic 3 Solve Problems Using Equations and Inequali-ties. They will solve real-world and mathematical prob-lems with numerical and algebraic equations and ine-qualities
This year we have started something called Team Challenge. This is a friendly way to reward and encourage positive behav-iors and Bulldog Pride. Each marking period the winning team earns a special prize for points earned during the MP.

Jenn Heller
6th Grade Language Arts & IEP Facilitator
This is my first-year teaching at Southern Middle, but my ninth-year teaching in Anne Arundel County. I have a Masters of Arts
degree in Leadership
through Teaching and I
hold Advanced Profes-
sional Certifications in
both General Education
and Special Education.
I grew up here in South County in a large family of six kids (I am the oldest). In middle school, many years ago, I was a very quiet student that enjoyed Language Arts and Tech Ed classes the most. I now live with my husband, our two beautiful daughters, and two
crazy dogs We are avid Syracuse Orange fans and we have been
all over the country, including Hawaii, to support the football/
basketball/ and lacrosse teams. We love to spend time doing any-
thing outside and being with our family as much as possible.
I am excited to be here at Southern this year and look forward to
building relationships with all the wonderful students here!
Welcome to SMS Ms. Heller!
