Bull Run Region AACA The 2009 car show, tour and swap meet season is just around the corner and I must say I am eager? to spend some money once again at Carlisle, Frederick, Hershey and other swap meets as my schedule per- mits. As our ‘56 Tbird is going back together, maybe we can do our small part to get the econ- omy rolling again. We had our board of directors meeting on March 1. I want to thank Joe Drago, Sally Batchelder, Franklin Gage and Pete Pandolfi for braving the weather and bringing their ideas to the meeting. I also want to thank Pat Porter, Franklin and Pete for bringing food and snacks. We ironed out some up- coming events and Pete will be signing up members for our al- ways popular picnic meetings this summer. I want to encourage your par- ticipation in a one day (April 18) old car tour that our fellow mem- ber, Bill Haegele, coordinated. Please see additional informa- tion in the flyer elsewhere in this newsletter. I urge you to attend to get to know your fellow club members, see a great car mu- seum, have a great lunch at Graves Mountain Lodge and visit some shops in Sperryville. Hopefully the weather will coop- erate so we can drop the top on our ’66 Mustang and have a great day of cruising. We have two club sponsored car shows this year, our annual local one in September and the Virginia wide Old Dominion Meet Association (ODMA) one in May. Pat Paquette still needs volunteers for any duties you feel you could contribute for the ODMA meet. She desperately needs a location near Rt 234/ Minnieville Road for parking ap- proximately 30 car trailers. If you have some space, or know someone who does, please let her know. Her phone number is 703-670-5051. Thank you to Pete Pandolfi for donating some items for the silent auction at the ODMA banquet. This is an op- portunity for the club to make some money at the meet. EDITOR’S NOTE

Howdy all! I would like to thank everyone for your support through these challeng-ing times. As earlier noted, the Pontiac went up for sale and we had a good offer from a gentle-man in Champaign, Illinois. Brings me to tears, but it ships out later this week. Now, it is time for the Mustang to head in a similar direction. Know of anyone interested in a 1969 Mustang Coupe? I do not have a flyer ready for this issue, but will post it soon Please call if in-terested. Mike 804-338-1404

20TH ANNUAL ORPHAN CAR TOUR

June 6 - 7, 2009 The 20th annual Orphan Car offers its participants a two-day event this year, in conjunction with the Chesapeake Region AACA's Spring Overnight Tour. The Orphan Tour, for owners of antique "orphan" (discontinued-make) cars, will set out on Saturday the 6th from a point somewhere in the area north of Freder-ick, Md., and will end the day in Cham-bersburg, Pa.

"Orphan" participants then have the option of joining the Chesapeake Region's tour (already in progress), on Sunday, which will visit the Swigart Museum in Hunting-don, Pa. More information will appear on our website, http://www.orphancartour.org/ when available. We welcome suggestions for interesting stops along the way, in the area between Frederick and Huntingdon. Phone Jon Battle with suggestions or questions, at 703-392-6870, or e-mail [email protected]

BULL RUN AACA MEETING MINUTES Bull Run Region AACA Meeting Summary February 10, 2009 at the PWC Fairgrounds, Manassas, VA By Franklin Gage, Secretary The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM SHARP by new President Leonard Paquette, who called on his wife Pat to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Harry Gibson to lead us in prayer. Treasurer Nicki Hudson's report was ac-cepted as read, and Franklin Gage agreed to audit her books for the past year. Sunshine Lady Ruth Blankenship gave her report. Sympathy was extended to longtime members Dick & Tani Hillegas on the death of their son, Brian, of mela-noma. Get well wishes were sent to Brian Danzig, Phil Graves, Dorothy Johnson, Mike Jones & Richard Porter. Shirley Farley is doing much better. Congratula-tions to Ray & Lenita Franklin on the birth of their first grandchild, and to repeat grandparents Bill & Lois Humphries. Membership Chair & Assistant Sally & Jim Batchelder reported we have 92 family memberships. 14 have not renewed from last year despite reminder calls. The 2009 Roster is being printed. On the survey question of whether our cur-rent Tuesday evening meetings are prefer-able to weekend meetings, the following responses were tallied: 56 - No reply 15 - Keep it Tuesday evening 11 - Saturday 7 - Sunday

They will bring other comments made with the renewal forms to our March meeting, but member Tom Aman suggested the club might be more family-friendly and at-tract younger participants with weekend events, and that events as opposed to meetings might attract more participants. Joe White suggested trying an alternative day for 3 or 4 months, and Pam Pandolfi suggested tabling that idea until our Au-gust picnic meeting. Sally Batchelder thought a reminder email to members a couple of days before meetings might help. Jon Battle took a straw poll at the meeting that yielded 7 votes for continuing on Tuesday evenings and indicated about half those present would not usually be able to attend on weekends. Ironically there were more members at tonight's meeting than we'd seen in months at non-picnic meet-ings. Rohr Show Chair Richard Porter was still hospitalized, but Pat Paquette said that if possible he would like the September 19, 2009 show to be point-judged (it was peer-judged by ballot last year). President Paquette suggested that judging team captains be Bull Run members, selected prior to the show. Mike Murphy raised the question of whether Bull Run members cars at the show should be judged at all, and Jon Battle took another straw poll indicating most members present favored a point-judged show if there are enough judges.

… MEETING MINUTES C O N T ’ D Pat Paquette's motion to have a point-judged show with details to be determined by the Show Committee in March was unanimously approved. Old Dominion Meet (ODMA) Chair Pat Paquette reported the next planning meet-ing will be March 7th and will be attended by her and our Representatives Richard Porter and Joann Richardson. The schedule for the meet is: Friday, May 15, 2009: Registration, social & silent auction. Saturday, May 16, 2009: Show followed by banquet. Helpers will be needed for eve-rything; Jim & Kelly Batchelder will be selling 50/50 tickets. Upcoming Activities will include a one day tour planned by member Bill Haegle on Saturday, April 18, 2009 with a rain date of May 2 if there is a 50% or greater chance of rain on the 18th. He plans to start at the Warrenton Park & Ride with visits to the Roaring Twenties Museum, a vineyard, lunch at Graves Mountain and at least one other attraction. Save the date(s); details in The Clutch Chatter. It was decided we will do our traditional display at the Strawberry Festival in De-laplane, VA on Saturday, May 23, 2009 (rain date May 24) and that will be our May Meeting as well. Members need to bring tents for shade as 'our' tree was removed. Under Old Business, it was noted there was a mix-up in the labels for the February

Clutch Chatter and Jim & Sally Batchelder will make sure that is fixed for March. Also, a Clutch Chatter article failed to note that Pete Pandolfi had taken our collection of Toys for Tots to that organiza-tion. Under New Business, President Paquette reminded members that Clutch Chatter Editor and Web Guy Mike Jones would like to be replaced, so any volunteers should contact him (Leonard) at 703/670-5051. Mike will help his successor(s). Jon Battle asked if possibly a computer student could do our webwork? Leonard asked if anyone would volunteer for March Meeting refreshments; Luke Stakenborg agreed to bring drinks and Leonard volunteered Pat to bring snacks. Nicki Hudson moved that we make a contribution to the Orange, VA 4-H Club in memory of Brian Hillegass and it was approved unanimously, with the under-standing that contributions of this sort would only be made after a vote by the membership in any future cases. The winning 50/50 ticket worth $48 was held by George Richardson, and the meeting adjourned at 8:47 PM to enjoy a huge collection of goodies brought by (thank you!) Pam Pandolfi.

AACA NATIONAL MEETING AACA National Meeting Summary February 13 - 14, 2009 at the Sheraton Hotel, Philadelphia, PA By Franklin Gage Traveling to Philadelphia in February probably isn't most normal peoples' idea of fun, but we all know AACA members generally don't fit in the 'normal' category! So for Friday, February 13 & Saturday, February 14, 2009 over 1,000 members were registered for the 73rd Annual National AACA Meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Philadelphia. Friday I attended Seminars that yielded infor-mation useful to Bull Run members. Bob Wal-lace of J.C. Taylor Insurance Co. (which pro-vides our club insurance in addition to private policies for hobbyists) explained provisions of the AACA policy. Most interesting to me was his confirmation that individual J.C. Taylor policyholders (and presumably those with other companies, although policyholders need to check with their carrier) are covered for par-ticipation in such activities as weddings, so long as they don't personally receive any re-muneration. Donations (to our Region, for ex-ample) in return for use of an owner's car would NOT be a problem should there be a claim. In view of our looking for a new Webmaster, I went to the "Websites for Regions" seminar led by former AACA Board Member Peter Gariepy from Arizona. Being technologically backward, I understood hardly a word he said, but took extensive notes to share with who-ever our next Webmaster may be. I was happy to finally meet Peter and thank him for his massive work on the AACA website, and he generously offered to help us if we need him. Nightowl members should know the AACA website closes for about 3 minutes in the very early morning hours each day to get updated.

I went to the "Region Activities" Seminar, but left early since it seemed directed toward the very large Regions of which we are not one. The "Membership" Seminar (led by AACA Board Member Tom Cox from the Roanoke, VA Valley Region) did involve some ideas we may wish to consider. For example, Roanoke increased their show participation by 30% by buying small classified ads in the "Antique Auto" section of the newspaper, and got many of the 30% signed up as AACA & Region members. He also suggested (similarly to our own Jon Battle) that new members be as-signed a 'mentor' to help make them feel wel-come until they get to know everyone. It was also suggested that to make meetings more interesting, members with automotive or non-automotive expertise (or acquaintances of members) be invited to give presentations. Friday evening featured AACA Board Member Dave Berg, (in real life he is a professional auctioneer) auctioning all manner of donated items to benefit the AACA Museum and Li-brary. Among the more active bidders was Bull Run Region (and AACA Museum Board) member Richard Sills, who bought several in-teresting items including a giant banner adver-tising the "Fin Era" display at the AACA Mu-seum last year, and a shingle for his law office proclaiming him to be an "Honest Lawyer." Richard hosted a Bull Run tour at his Lancas-ter, PA garage several years ago and that is where the banner will reside. Someone bid $150 for the privilege of displaying his car at the AACA Museum for a month (I considered making a bid with a promise to send my 'worst' car, since those familiar with the condi-tion of some of my cars would surely have outbid me to keep up the museum's stan-dards!).

Page 15 March 2009

. . .AACA NATIONAL MEETING ( C O N T ’ D ) Saturday morning's first activity was AACA Judging School, which helps prepare those of us who volunteer to judge at National Meets. Among changes for this year, such things as batteries, headlights, belts, tires, hoses and clamps may be of modern manufacture but must be visually of the type and era specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Brand is not im-portant, however, so you don't necessarily have to have a Mopar battery in your Chrysler product, or those ever more elusive "T-3" headlights for your 50's or 60's cars (although brand is unimportant, they should be visually of the period and matching). All the discussion of fire extinguisher stan-dards of the past few years may now be ig-nored - we are back to requiring simply an Un-derwriters Lab approved fire extinguisher of any size and type in displayed/touring vehi-cles. On a personal note, my favorite was the Chevrolet Seminar, where Dan Rensing of Ohio recounted his participation in the Peking to Paris rally last year. In about 7,000 miles he and his partner (with a few dozen other an-tique cars) drove his 1930 Chevrolet through several countries. His only problem of conse-quence was when his 6-volt battery exploded in Mongolia with no one locally able to speak English. He finally found help when a local drilled a hole in a 12-volt battery and inserted a bolt - in effect making two 6-volt batteries so Dan could resume his journey. As enthusias-tic as he was, Dan said he probably wouldn't do another rally of this sort since the cost was well in excess of $100,000 (including buying and restoring the car specifically for this event). The Seminar also featured a retired worker from the Tarrytown, NY GM plant where my

'51 Chevy was built. Since he came to work there when '51's were being built it is possible he helped build mine and the nearly identical one that was our only family car for nearly 20 years... Saturday afternoon featured the actual Annual Meeting, where various reports were given and AACA Board election outcomes an-nounced. Re-elected to the Board were out-going President Sharon Lee, Peter Brown, Dave Zimmerman and Brenda Shore-Kaiser. A newly elected Board Member is Jack Arm-strong from New Hampshire. AACA is financially sound; membership has increased about 1,100 compared to last year. However most of the increase is attributable to the 4 complimentary memberships each Region & Chapter receive each year for which only new members are eligible. About half of these complimentaries have been renewing, so the program pays for itself and keeps our membership from declining. There are early discussions with the very large Society of Automotive Engineers about recruiting their members. As some Bull Run members should know, there is a new, free AACA e-mail newsletter Speedster. If you're not yet getting it, go to [email protected]. The AACA Museum in Hershey, PA was five years old in 2008, and had a record year of more than 45,000 visitors. Also a record 35 vehicles were donated, and fundraising has gone well (admission is free to AACA mem-bers). Upcoming displays include Tuckerville Trains on the first Saturday of each month un-til October, 'Car of Our Stars,' a display of mu-seum volunteers' cars from mid-March until early May, 2009, 'Sports Cars in America,'

Page 16: Bull Run Region AACA March 2009 Vol 28, Issue 3 …Bull Run Region AACA The 2009 car show, tour and swap meet season is just around the corner and I must say I am eager? to spend some

Page 16 March 2009

May 23-October 11, 2009, 'Firebirds & Cama-ros,' November 2009-Spring, 2010, and in about 2 months a '53 Cadillac LeMans show-car will be on display. A 2000 Plymouth Prowler is being raffled. A "Member Roundtable" with an open micro-phone at the end of the meeting generated a lot of response, with most of it centering around who would be the year's AACA Presi-dent (the President is chosen by the Board in private following the meeting). In the past the Board has traditionally chosen the incumbent Executive Vice President, but this year chose 'the other' Mike Jones of Pennsylvania in-stead. Terry Bond of the Tidewater, VA Re-gion was chosen as the new Executive Vice President. At the National Awards Banquet Saturday evening, where outstanding cars and achieve-ments are recognized, it was nice to see Bull Run members Jim & Edna Cross win the Ed-gar E. Rohr Memorial Award for their 1909 Buick. There were audible gasps of admira-tion from around the room as the picture of it came up on the wall. This award is for a 1920 or older Buick that has participated in AACA events and been driven at least 500 miles

since restoration (I'd wanted to attend Jim's Buick Seminar on Friday, but it conflicted with the Insurance Seminar I needed to attend). Winning the Hershey Region Junior Truck Award was Bull Run member Bob Mantz with his 1952 Chevrolet pickup, restored by former Bull Run member Tom Aubrey. This award is sponsored by the Hershey Region to recog-nize an outstanding truck shown at a National Meet. Since Sandy couldn't attend, Bob brought along his enthusiastic son Brad and his wife, who (having no interest in cars) suf-fered through the entire weekend with great patience. And as has become customary, 'our' Mike Jones won a Master Webmaster Award for our website. When the award is announced the homepage is displayed on the wall and ours continues to generate murmurs of admi-ration. A new Annual National Award was donated by AACA Board Member Joanna Cooper of Okla-homa in memory of her husband Tom. It will recognize outstanding Factory High Perform-ance cars (AACA Class 36).
