Welcome to Worship - May 11, 2014 Christ is Risen! Rejoice and be glad in this special day the Lord has made. Like the disciples, we experience a mixture of joy, fear and disbelief at news of the risen Jesus. Receive us, O God, just as we are. Introduction for the Day: Today is sometimes called “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Jesus is called the “gate” of the sheep in today’s gospel. The risen Christ opens the way to abundant life. He anoints our heads with oil and guides us beside the still waters of our baptism. Each Sunday he spreads a feast before us in the midst of the world’s violence and war. We go forth to be signs of the resurrection and extend God’s tender care to all creation. Child for Baptism: (8:30) Milo Howard Chay, child of Michael and Randi Chay, Wauwatosa, was born February 25, 2014. Sponsors are Tyler Willingham and Katie Maliel. Milo is the great- grandson of Mrs. Evelyn Lentz, a long-time member of St. Matthew’s. Flowers are given by Pastor Ray W. Stubbe in loving memory of his father, Clarence A. Stubbe’s, May 17th birthday. Flowers are given by Bob & Carol Beecher in honor of their 15th wedding anniversary. A library book has been given to the church library by Ken & Bev Etzelmueller in honor of daughter Kristen’s graduation at Marquette University with a master’s degree. Healing Service Today: Today’s healing service will be held in the Sanctuary at 9:45 a.m. All those desiring special healing prayer for themselves or others are invited to attend. Have you thought about The Lutheran, our ELCA national magazine? The Lu- theran has thought about us, featuring Just One More Ministry in its April issue. Stop at the display table in the narthex today, take a look at some sample copies, and consider subscribing to this excellent communication channel. Peruse the church news, explorations of timely topics, editorials, Bible studies, congregational features, reflections, and readers’ letters. Get to know our new Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, through her monthly column. The Lutheran offers all of us the opportunity to see our Church at work, to consider our own lives of faith, and to sense our connec- tion with the larger Body of Christ. If just 25 new households subscribe, we can get the group rate of $8.95 per year, which is quite a bargain. Please do think about The Lutheran!

Join the NAMI Walk in memory of Eric Kloth By Doris and Luther KlothEric, our eldest son, suffered from mental illness for 20 years. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness played a huge role in his life. NAMI, Greater Milwaukee Chapter helped Eric get better care and housing and gave him a sense of purpose. Eric spoke about living with mental illness to groups all over Milwaukee in the In Our Own Voice program. His mission was to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, a stigma he constantly felt. This year we are again continuing Eric’s mission by having a team, Remembering Eric Kloth in the NAMIwalks. The NAMIwalks is being held on Saturday, May 17th at Veterans Park, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. Registration is from 9:30 to 11 and the walk begins at 11. We invite you to participate by donating to our team and/or walking with us on May 17. Call Committee Update: After the congregational meeting on April 27, Pastor Chris provided an update on the call process for a new associate pastor. Three qualified candidates were interviewed over the last several weeks; each interview was a two-day process. Although all three were good pastors, none was the right fit for St. Matthew’s. The call committee considers the fit with our culture, staff, and pastoral staff. Pastor Chris emphasized that we need to be excited about the new pastor. The synod has more names for us. Pastors Chris and Margaret have already conducted one pre-interview with another scheduled. In the mean time, the call committee recommended some help for the pastors. This summer we will have more pulpit support, and we will consider part-time interim help, especially on Sunday mornings, if we don’t have someone by September. Our priority is that we can continue to do ministry, to care for people. We trust that the Holy Spirit is guiding us in this process.

Quilt Blessing for 2014Created with love by Stitches of Love Quilt Ministry

Celebrating 11 years of ministryThe Quilt Ministry strives to make beautiful quilts and blankets from donated fabrics for distribution to individuals who are in physical, emotional, or spiritual need. Each item sewn through the Ministry is uniquely created and made with love, just as each of its members who created them has been formed by God. Many different talents, skills, friendship and creative minds woven together to touch the lives of those in need has been a miracle unfolding. Thanks to church members, children, grandchildren and friends of the quilting ministry for their donations. Prior to distribution, all quilts receive a prayer of blessing.

The quilt ministry, Stitches of Love, at St. Matthew’s came into being in late 2003. A total of 1,668 quilts have been donated to date and this concludes our 11th year of creating love and warm to those in need.

Sunday, June 1st is St. Matthew’s Celebration Sunday!

What is Celebration Sunday? We are celebrating a wonderful year of growing in faith and service with a special worship service and picnic after worship in our west parking lot. We look forward to welcoming new members, our church partners, neighbors and friends as we give thanks for our blessings and rejoice in the spirit-filled community that is St. Matthew’s!

Morning9:45-10:45 a.m.Don’t miss Education Hour! We are hosting guest speaker, Barbie Izquierdo, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two children. Barbie’s story is featured in the widely-acclaimed documentary A Place at the Table shown to our adult education audience here at St. Matthew’s in March.
