The project BULBO aims

to revolutionize the

relationship between

man and nature in the

domestic environment:

through the use of

advanced lighting

technology and with

great attention to form,

a typical characteristic

of Italian industrial

design, BULBO proposes

innovative solutions for

all environments devoid

of natural light.

BULBO lamps are

constructed with new LED

technology that produces

an optimized light

spectrum to stimulate

photosynthesis in plants

that are living with partial

or a complete lack of

sunlight. These devices

integrate low power

consumption technology

with a highly stylized

aesthetic and provide an

innovative and functional

Bulbo light and more

concept:

“Energy creates light.

Light gives energy to the

plant.”

BULBO is not just a

decorative lamp, but

a real design tool that

revolutionizes indoor

domestic gardening,

by inventing a food

supply chain solution

that encourages a new


man and nature. BULBO

provides the opportunity

for anybody to grow

vegetables and herbs at

home all year round and

enjoy food in a natural

way in accordance with

the “Kilometer Zero”

trend.

BULBO fulfills the

current trends of bringing

nature back into our

cities, by transforming

underutilized space into

an opportunity for urban

cultivation. In the past 15

years farming has moved

from the countryside

to the city, and is now

referred to as “urban

gardening”. Thanks to

BULBO it is finally able to

move from the outdoor

urban environment into

the urban domestic space,

offering the opportunity

for the “apartment

garden”.

The BULBO group

consists of three young

graduates of Bologna,

Italy, who have recently

participated and won

a competition (Spinner

2013), which provides EU

funds to finance young

entrepreneurs, to move

forward with research

and development of

innovative technological

ideas in order to create

new businesses.

The project stems from

both technological and

scientific research initiated

by Lorenzo Antonioni, an

Industrial Design graduate

from the Politecnico of

Milan in early 2010.

The following 2

years of studies and

experimentations have

carried out interesting

results so it was decided

to develop a product

directed to the domestic

market, specifically to

the individual consumer.

This has been the

starting point for the

collaboration between 28

year old designer Lorenzo

Antonioni, 25 year old

Chiara Piovene with a

degree in Agricultural

Science, and 27 year old

Tommaso Marzioni with

a degree in Business

Administration.

This is the team who

believed in the project

from its conception,

participated and won the

Spinner 2013 competition

and is now carrying out

the development of the

idea.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

The Spinner 2013

competition has

strengthened the


the project creator,

Lorenzo Antonioni and

the Department of

Agronomy in Bologna

University. A full cycle of

experimentation started

in December 2012 at the

university laboratories.

The aim of these

experiments is not only to

guarantee the functioning

of BULBO devices, but

also to focus on different

plant families, in order to

adjust exactly the light

spectrum required by

each one of them.

By this way it will be

possible to give advice

to all consumers, helping

them in cultivating

whatever kind of plant

they like.

Cynara is a single-spot led (Light Emitting Diodes) light able to implement the natural vegetation growth for any type of plant. It has an extremely simple structure consisting of a long stem which allows to be easily put into the earth. It can be used either in small pots or in bigger ones by combining two or more units.

CYNARA works in vertical positions as well as in horizontal. This system fits perfectly for domestic cultivation purposes such as indoor and outdoor vegetable cultivations.

CYNARA provides a valid implementation of the plant growth performances strongly decreasing the power consumption, even in totally dark environments.

Horti lumen are professional led systems for intensive vegetable cultivations. Their technology is based on the selection of frequency light range detectable by plants and the removal of surplus light. Due to their flexible vertical and horizontal structure they can be used in domestic spaces such as, for instance, kitchens, cabinets, basements or in work spaces, offices, etc. Their adjustable structure allows the light source height to be modulated following the whole vegetation cycle, and adapting them to variable growing surfaces.
