Stedec (part of VK Engineering)Stedec is a firm for structural engineering, specialized in developing and calculating building structures in concrete and steel. Stedec is one of the most important firms for structural engineering in West Flanders and each year Stedec is responsible for the structure of buildings with a total value of over 300 million Euros in the inland as well as in foreign countries.

Nowadays, a structural engineering is an important participant in the building process and in the building team. In cooperation with the project manager, the architect and general contractor, we always look for the most economic and optimal structural solution for each building. Because of the tight schedules and completion periods becoming shorter and since there is a lack of qualified con-struction workers, an integrated precast structure is the only solution. From the start, Stedec develops the most efficient precast structure for residential buildings as well as for office buildings.

From this point of view, Stedec provides not only the common structural engineering, but also studies where the formwork plans already take into account an execution in precast concrete. Furthermore, Stedec has the know-how to make production drawings of precast concrete elements, which can directly be implemented into the production process of the precast manufacturer. We can also adapt and optimize existing studies of structures in situ into a fully precast structure.

A BIM-model becomes the more and more important in construction. Stedec has the necessary know-how and software to be a full partner in de BIM-process of each project.

The iconic Baelskaai 12 residential tower in Ostend is the first re-alization within Bouwgroep Versluys’ and CFE’s New Waterfront City housing project. The building is a design of CONIX RDBM Architects and has been built by MBG. New Waterfront City follows the trend seen in many European cities to transform old ports into trendy residential and working areas.

“Baelskaai 12 is the first high-rise building of that size and complexity for which we used BuildSoft’s Diamonds software to do the structural design analysis in 3D,” Koen Coelus starts off. “Every floor of this 48-meter high tower building is unique. The concrete load-bearing walls stagger from one level to the next, while some of the post-tensioned concrete floors cantilever 6 meter to realize the ‘living outdoor’ terraces that offer a unique view of the sea, the dunes and the port of Ostend. And two cantilevering outdoor swimming pools are the icing on the cake. Without the use of 3D structural analysis software, it would have been impossible to perform a reliable loads descent or to calculate stresses in the concrete walls.”

“But that was not the only reason why we used the Diamonds struc-tural analysis software during this project,” Maarten Vervaet adds. “Because of the highly asymmetric design, we also had to carefully manage the differences in elastic shortening on both sides of the building. Because of these differences, even the permanent loads in-duce important horizontal deformations of the entire building struc-ture. The calculation of these deformations made it imperative to perform a 3D structural analysis.

And finally, the 3D structural analysis also enabled us to deal smooth-ly with any changes in the design as requested by either the architect or the owners of the apartments, such as pairing two adjacent apart-

ments or shifting load-bearing walls. During all our high-rise building projects, we have repeatedly seen that the ability to iterate the design has become critically important. Thanks to 3D structural analysis, we can respond quickly to any requests that come forward.”

“Although our project portfolio includes a wide range of building structures, this high-rise building is typical of how we think and work,” Koen Coelus concludes. “Since 1985 I have seen the construction industry change dramatically.
