BUILDING YOUR K-5 FAMILY, BUS INFORMATION, AND REGISTRATION! K-5 Learning Communities Newsletter May 2018 What a busy month May is for our kids, families, and educators! As we celebrate the end of another won- derful school year, we want our families to be aware of the continued planning our team is doing in prepa- ration for your return in August! Building Your K-5 Family Your K-5 teachers have been engaged in team building opportunities in preparation for the transition to five new learning communities. Once per month in September, January, February, March and April, the new K-5 learning community teacher teams came together during early dismissal PLC time. These PLC team building sessions provided opportunities for teachers to get to know each other and work in grade- level teams. As a result, teachers began to develop a vision for their new learning communities and helped to create a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) behavior matrix that will be used in all K-5 buildings. The educators also took a bus ride through their learning community area to become fa- miliar with the new boundaries. During the week of August 6-10, the staff members of the new learning communities will engage in more team building. This professional learning opportunity will include school improvement planning, participating in a poverty simulation, and developing systems for their buildings. Bus Transportation Your K-5 learning communities principals want to give parents/guardians advance notice of the transpor- tation information for next school year. 2018-2019 bus transportation information includes the specific details regarding the shuttles for the new K-5 Baldwin and Harrison split learning communities. Our first priority is to ensure safety while transporting your child between school and home locations, while providing efficient and effective bus routes for the district. We consulted with the QPS transportation department to coordinate bus routes for all QPS students and determined the start time and stop times for all K-5 learning communities. The start time of 8:45 a.m. for all K-5 learning communities was determined in order to provide the two-tiered bus service for the earlier start time at QHS and QJHS. This two-tiered bus service maximizes the use of the QPS bus force to safely and effectively load, transport, and unload elementary students. Each K-5 school will open the doors at 8:00 a.m. for all students because breakfast service will continue to be offered at each K-5 building. Regarding the before and after school child care program, each K-5 school will open the doors at 7:00 a.m. for those students only. The Denman (Harrison Street) and Baldwin split learning communities will provide a transfer shuttle bus service for students before and after school. At the two Denman learning community locations - Denman K-1 on 8th Street (formerly Berrian School) or Denman 2-5 on Jefferson Street (formerly Adams School), parents can drop off and pick up students at one location and the students will have transfer shuttle bus service to and from the other loca- tion. At the two Baldwin learning community locations - Baldwin K-2 on 30th Street (formerly Ellington School) or Baldwin 3-5 on Maine Street (formerly Madison School), parents can drop off and pick up stu- dents at one location and the students will have transfer shuttle bus service to and from the other loca- tion. Parents of incoming K-12 are encouraged to register online during spring registration, which is open now through May 31 st , in order to determine bus service needs for the 2018-2019 school year.

Building Your K-5 Family

Your K-5 teachers have been engaged in team building opportunities in preparation for the transition to five new learning communities. Once per month in September, January, February, March and April, the new K-5 learning community teacher teams came together during early dismissal PLC time. These PLC team building sessions provided opportunities for teachers to get to know each other and work in grade-level teams. As a result, teachers began to develop a vision for their new learning communities and helped to create a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) behavior matrix that will be used in all K-5 buildings. The educators also took a bus ride through their learning community area to become fa-miliar with the new boundaries. During the week of August 6-10, the staff members of the new learning communities will engage in more team building. This professional learning opportunity will include school improvement planning, participating in a poverty simulation, and developing systems for their buildings.

Bus Transportation

Your K-5 learning communities principals want to give parents/guardians advance notice of the transpor-tation information for next school year.

• At the two Denman learning community locations - Denman K-1 on 8th Street (formerly Berrian School) or Denman 2-5 on Jefferson Street (formerly Adams School), parents can drop off and pick up students at one location and the students will have transfer shuttle bus service to and from the other loca-tion.

• At the two Baldwin learning community locations - Baldwin K-2 on 30th Street (formerly Ellington School) or Baldwin 3-5 on Maine Street (formerly Madison School), parents can drop off and pick up stu-dents at one location and the students will have transfer shuttle bus service to and from the other loca-tion.

Parents of incoming K-12 are encouraged to register online during spring registration, which is open now through May 31st, in order to determine

bus service needs for the 2018-2019 school year.
