Building Work Skills
Students in the Transition Classrooms and Project
Independence at the E.S.C. are learning new job skills.
With the
donation from a local
manufacturer these young
men are able to test their
skills of following directions,
completing a task correctly, and
have even improved their
completion time. These young
men may have a possible
manufacturing career in their
futures thanks to this opportunity
and their job coach, Nancy
Mauter.

“Choose
Yourself” was
the message in our second round of
Emotional Intelligence training with
Kenton administrators and teachers.
Do you want to be who you are? Do
you do what you need to do? Do
you have what you need to give?
These Kenton staff members
explored the understanding of
consequential thinking and how
positivity and intrinsic motivation
help produce results. They also
worked on how to navigate emotions
to manage stress and choose to be
who they want to represent
themselves as. Deep thinking and
rich conversation has led to great
team building and self-awareness.

facilitating four all-day professional
development sessions with ELA,

teachers in grades 5 & 6. These

ADA:
Ada staff
continues to
work on
building their
instructional toolboxes. The district
has embraced the A.D.A. model
which focuses on three components
in a lesson design – Activate, Drive,
and Assess. Their work with Dr.
Schletchy and Marzzano has
provided the culture for the work
they are doing in
their classrooms.
KENTON:
Social Emotional
Learning, or Emotional
Intelligence, has
become increasingly
utilized by our
districts. Kenton has involved two
groups of
administrators
sessions focused on curriculum
mapping, resources/standards
alignment, and breaking down the
state testing blueprints.
HARDIN COUNTY:
On Thursday, November 4th,
Superintendents, Principals, and
teachers from Hardin County
schools collaborated at Jitterz
Coffeehouse in Kenton. This
meeting focused on developing the
academic and cultural stories of
individual communities, as well as,
Hardin County as a whole. Exciting
things are happening with the
connection of community and a
collection of like-minded student
achievement. Future meetings will
continue to project the great things
happening in Hardin County
schools.

On November 2nd, the
curriculum department held the
second Math AIR Test Prep
Function. This session was
comprised of 25 teachers from
multiple school districts. Teachers
had the opportunity to add new tools
to their curriculum toolboxes,
collaborate with other math teachers,
and discover the importance of cross
-curricular literacy on assessment
achievement.
Science teachers collaborated to
engage in science curriculum in
preparation for state tests. Teachers
explored reading across the
curriculum, ways to grow
vocabulary awareness, and the use of
online simulations to increase test
productivity.
IN THE STATE:
Auglaize and Mercer County
Curriculum departments presented at
the National Career Pathways
Conference in Indianapolis. They
were invited to speak about the
Career
Talent
Connection Forum implemented last
year for area juniors and seniors.
The group has also presented at the
Rural Education Forum, which is
another national event.
ST MARYS:
Teachers at St.
Marys
Intermediate
collaborated to
learn new ways
to teach their gifted students. They
started by learning the differences
of the characteristics between high
ability,
creative,
and gifted
learners.
Then they
worked on
a new
strategy to create activities that will
add depth and complexity to their
learning standards.
WAYNESFIELD-GOSHEN:
Preschool teachers at Waynesfield-
Goshen took a look at Dr. Seuss
literature to create
cross curricular
units in their
classrooms with a
focus on
incorporating
science and social studies.
REGIONAL:
After a very successful Math AIR
Test session earlier in the school
year, we had an abundance of
interest in hosting a second session.
Kelli was invited to present at the
Ohio Association of Children’s
Conference held in Columbus on
WEP writing. She presented on how
to make WEP writing more
purposeful and intentional for both
teachers and students. WEPs are
required for any student who is
identified gifted and receiving
services. Kelli demonstrated how to
simplify the process and make it
more meaningful.
Kelli and Tommy made the journey
to the Renaissance Hotel in
downtown Columbus to present at
the Ohio School Improvement
Institute conference. Kelli has
developed and facilitated multiple
sessions in our districts regarding
social and emotional intelligence in
the classroom, and this is an
extension of that work. Participants
at the conference learned about self-
science, the impact of social and
emotional learning, and its purpose
in the classroom.

Misty Mihm from the
Auglaize County Crisis
Center spoke to the
students in the Opportunity
For Youth Program this
November. Her
presentation was entitled
“Healthy Relationships.”
It explored what healthy
dating relationships looked
like and gave the students
information and resources
on recognizing and dealing
with relationships that may
be toxic. We appreciate
her time and valuable
information.
