themselves with declining adoption
rates on new products.
Data and analytics are key to
overcoming these challenges—and
are the foundation for building the
industry-leading factories of the
future. Only by deploying the right
technologies for deeper insight
into a growing mass of data can
high-tech organizations achieve
the resiliency, productivity, and
innovation necessary to meet the
evolving demands of the market.
In the following pages, we review
the major components that must
be in place for manufacturers
to maintain a competitive
advantage well into the future.
In particular, we discuss how the
combination of Teradata® Unified
Data Architecture™ (UDA) and
TIBCO Spotfire® delivers a full-
stack solution—including data
warehousing, analytics, and
business intelligence (BI)—so that
manufacturers can operationalize
analytics for greater agility across
the enterprise.
Big Data Challenges
Products and manufacturing
capabilities continue to grow in
complexity. As product complexity
increases, multi-disciplinary
decision-making will become
even more important, not only to
improve time-to-market, but to
manage and mitigate risk.
With the dawn of these new
“Smart” products and
manufacturing equipment,
companies are generating and
collecting a larger volume of
data in ever widening variety
and at ever-accelerating speeds.
These smart products are major
components of the Internet of
Things and are now pervasive
across all industries bringing
the big data problem to all
manufacturers from software to
semiconductors to auto industrial
companies.
The proliferation of big data
may seem overwhelming—but
manufacturers have no choice but
to meet the challenges at hand.
With insufficient access to the
right data at the right time, global
supply chains are simply unable to
meet local fluctuations in demand.
Shrinking field service margins
discourage companies from
generating new offerings. And with
limited insight into the customer
experience, companies find
The Teradata Unified Data Architecture™ allows organi-
zations to capture, deploy, support, manage, and seam-lessly access all their data. Download to learn more.

A unified architecture can help.
Teradata provides high-tech
manufacturers with new analytic
capabilities to integrate dark data
with other information across the
supply chain, from the shop floor
to assets in the field. The result is
a digital thread that extends the
supply chain to the customer.
Using information from a wide
range of sources—including sensor,
telematic, clickstream, social media,
and machine log data—a fully
integrated solution from Teradata
can help analysts achieve deeper
visibility in the following areas:
Manufacturing See if equipment
becomes misaligned or begins
to malfunction long before
problems emerge that might cause
production delays.
Field services Contact customers
and offer servicing prior to failure
or malfunction.
Digital marketing Generate a
360-degree view of customer
activity with cross-digital insights
from sources such as product
sensors, Web site activity, and
customer purchases.
This full-stack, purpose-built solu-
tion scales analytics across any
user base, empowering engineers
to apply the appropriate architec-
ture to solve the problem at hand.
Integrated analytics libraries make
it easier to incorporate more data
from more places into every analy-
sis. And with TIBCO Spotfire, an
innovative business analytics and
data discovery platform designed
for in-database interoperability,
users can achieve major reductions
in analytic latency for accelerated
decision making.
Samples of TIBCO Spotfire Reports
Visibility into Dark Data
According to a recent study by Gartner, 38 percent of respondents cited “underutilized dark data” as the most immediate opportunity for transforming the business.
Achieve greater resiliency across the supply chain. Improve service margins. Make decisions faster. To understand how to achieve these and other benefits with help from the Teradata Unified Data Architecture,™ download our article “Shining the Light on Dark Data.”
From manufacturing
equipment to software
solutions to mobile devices,
these “smart” products are
producing new types of data.
Much of this data, however, remains
dark because it is excluded from
existing IT systems and processes.
How can manufacturers operationalize
and analyze even the darkest data
to identify patterns, enhance insights,
and improve decision making?

across the organization. That’s why
Teradata has teamed up with TIBCO
Software and its Spotfire visual
analytics platform to provide non-IT
users with a truly interactive data
discovery environment, uncovering
high-tech insights previously
masked by data silos, sampling,
or high-level data calculations.
Benefits include the following:
Single view of the business Arm
frontline employees with timely,
accurate business information.
Actionable insights in a self-
service environment Ask,
answer, anticipate, and act upon
relevant questions with minimal
dependence on IT staff.
Visibility into the unknown
Uncover trends, patterns, and
insights previously hidden in large
data silos.
Encapsulated expertise Master
complex business challenges by
aggregating and taking advantage
of the knowledge of database
administrators, analysts, and
decision makers.
Universal adaptability Move the
business forward with a single
enterprise data engine for back-
office analysis and frontline
decision making.
Real-time Event Analytics Helps
organizations identify and address
developing situations and trends by
correlating massive volumes of data
about discrete events and applying
predefined rules to identify
situations that require a response.
The combination of Teradata UDA and Spotfire solutions will create a unique opportunity for manufacturers to improve customer satisfaction with resilience and innovation in products and services. Read our solutions brief on the unique alliance between Spotfire and Teradata.
Analytics shouldn’t just be for data
scientists. In fact, today’s data-
intensive environments require
insight and input from stakeholders
across all areas of the business.
Rather than depend on siloed
data that can only be accessed
by a select few, manufacturing
organizations need even
nontechnical users, artists and data
consumers to leverage composite
data from multiple sources, to
enable insights by all.
Business visualization is the most
effective way to provide that level
of access and empowerment
Insight for All: Scientists, Artists, and Data Consumers
“Being able to work with Spotfire directly connected to billions of data records through Teradata will greatly improve our ability to manage the big data dilemma and to extend our ‘two-second advantage’ through real-time decisioning.”~ Becky Wanta, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, MGM Resorts International

BIG DATA CHALLENGES | VISIBILITY INTO DARK DATA | INSIGHT FOR ALL | ANALYTICAL TOOLS | RESOURCES
Today’s manufacturers need
to analyze massive amounts of
data in many different ways,
using a variety of algorithms
and techniques. With multiple
analytics tools at their disposal,
they can gain fast, easy access
to the broadest range of BI tools
on demand. Tasks that once took
hours can be rewritten and run in a
matter of minutes.
Teradata’s UDA enables access to
the right analytic for the right data
at the right time. The architecture
creates a common compute fabric
supporting a variety of analytic
languages including SQL, SQL
– Map Reduce, R and others.
This allows users to execute the
analytics in the way they need to
support a variety of manufacturing
use cases from complex event
processing (CEP) to predictive,
perspective and reactive analytic
workflows bringing insight to
all users.
For example, Fuzzy Logix’s
comprehensive in-database
analytics library is more complete
than any other, with more than
600 algorithms that work inside
Teradata platforms. Manufacturers
can use this extensive library
to run everything from simple
statistical analyses to Monte Carlo
simulations, all from deep within
the Teradata and Teradata Aster®
Discovery Platform.

Benefits include the following:
Easy access to all available data
Analysts can easily self-provision
a workspace within the data
warehouse and add experimental
data for analysis, then focus on the
analysis rather than the mechanics
of extracting the right data.
Full interoperability with analysts’
favorite tools With XQuery sup-
port for XML, built-in functions for
geospatial and temporal data, open
source R for analytics tools, and hun-
dreds of new Fuzzy Logix functions,
analysts have more ways to make
the most of their favorite tools.
Comprehensive set of analytics
functions Applying Fuzzy Logix
analytics at the source, users can
eliminate uncorrelated variables or
statistically insignificant observations,
greatly reducing the response time
necessary for standard modeling
and reporting tools.
