IHUIHUWhy this theme (1/2)?
• Climate change is perhaps the research issue with the highest policy relevance and substantial economic implications.
• Air pollution represents a severe problem especially in larger conurbations all over the world.
• The linkage between climate change and air pollution is scientifically very challenging.

IHUIHUWhy this theme (2/2)?
• The International Hellenic University is already offering an MSc in Energy Systems and will soon offer two further Master programs with relevance to this theme:– Sustainable Development (with streams on
Strategies and Tourism)– Environmental Technology (addressing
explicitly Air Pollution)

IHUIHUWhere do we stand now?
• Some Greek Universities are among the European leaders in the specific field.
• There are several examples for fruitful collaboration between research groups in Greece and the US.
• Greek experts are members of networks, to which also US colleagues are contributing.
• But: Synergy in teaching is rather limited.
IHUIHUNetworking
• Interdisciplinary networks in individual universitiesExample: The Sustainable Development Network of the Aristotle University (linking 9 Schools and Departments) Contact: [email protected]
• National networks and centersExample: The RCE - Central Macedonia
• International activitiesExample: The ACCENT Network of Excellence

ObjectivesAddress major regional SD challenges
Actively promote Education for SD at all levels Raise public awareness on key regional SD issuesDevelop strong links with the RCE global network
Develop a regional communication network on SD issues Engage in research in collaboration with regional partners
Support regional and local authorities on SD issuesDisseminate research findings, experiences, knowledge
and good practices Study climate change regional impacts and develop
