• DLI has recognizes there are growing concerns whether there will be enough qualified individuals to fill vacancies in the building code enforcement industry in the future.
• For this reason, DLI established the Building Official Training (BOT) Grant Program.
• Grantees will establish education and on-the-job training programs in their municipalities to help prepare their trainees to become building officials.

Grant funding
DLI may award up to 12 Building Official Training grants• Four for the seven-county metro area. • Eight for Greater Minnesota municipalities.
Grants may be awarded for two types of tracks• Track one: 12-month training period• Track two: 24-month training period*
*Includes an additional grant amount for the longer training period.

Grant funding
• Funding will be allocated through a competitive grant process.
• A grant review committee will review and score the applications and proposals.
• The purpose of this grant program is to provide some funding and support to qualified municipalities.

Minimum qualifications
To be considered a ‘Qualified Municipality’applicants must meet these requirements:
1. Applicants must be a “municipality” as defined in Minnesota State Building Code Chapter 1300.0070 subp. 17; Minnesota Statutes 326B.103, subd. 9.• Subd. 9. Municipality.
"Municipality" means a city, county, or town, the University of Minnesota, or the State for public buildings and state licensed facilities.

To be considered a ‘Qualified Municipality’applicants must meet these requirements:
2. A municipality must administer and enforce the MinnesotaState Building Code by having adopted the code by ordinance incompliance with Minnesota Statutes 326B.121, subd. 2.

Grant documents
In addition to the five documents, you must provide:
• Proof of workers’ compensation insurance coverage.
• A copy of your Effective and Equal Opportunity policy.
• A copy of the joint powers agreement if collaborating with another municipality for the delivery of services to the extent that an agreement is needed.
• The grant funding requirements do not restrict collaboration.
