Dear Friends,

Last winter, in preparation for Stars’ 45th Anniversary event, we asked our Youth in Motion (YIM) students from Randolph High School to help us tell the “Stars Story.” Three talented students, Cedric Purell, Derrick Tham, and Giovanni Pereira, and their advisor, Emily Graham-Handley, produced an impressive result: South Shore Stars: Building Community One Child at a Time.

As most of you know, Stars is a very special organization. The continuity of programming throughout a child’s development and support for the entire family is a critical component of our success. As Youth Program Director Michele MacDonald shares in the video, “We make a connection with families that many times is life-long.”

Each year more than 1,200 children, aged newborn through 18, participate in our programs, which include our family child-care system, Early Head Start, three preschools, four school age centers, two middle school programs, and summer camp. In addition, we have our Randolph High School Stars and YIM programs which recently received the highest-level rating (“demonstration status”) as a U.S. Dept. of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center.

Who We Serve

Stars is a community-based organization focused on early education and youth development. We are committed to serving a diverse population with an emphasis on low-income parents and children who have experienced trauma.

Each year more than 1,200 children, aged newborn through 18, participate in our programs, which include:

Why We Are Effective

Four core goals form the foundation of our work:

1. Enable parents to work.

2. Help each child reach her or his full developmental potential

3. Facilitate positive youth development

4. Improve academic achievement for students at risk of academic failure

Our success is due to our clear vision, strategic planning, innovative programming, careful investment of resources to achieve best practices, ongoing assessment and program evaluation, and commitment to collaborating with schools and other service providers.

• Ongoing assessment with individualized planning

How We Support Families

We believe in supporting and partnering with our children’s parents and guardians to help their children thrive. Accordingly, we work hard to help them:

• Support their children’s growth and development by providing ongoing counseling and referrals

• Gain access to community programs and services

• Obtain basic services, such as job training, food, housing and utilities

• Increase their self-sufficiency through advocacy, collaboration and partnering with other agencies
