CO2 reduction target met ahead of schedule – new ambitious target set for 2015

• 1990-2009:

2010 target reached ahead of schedule: CO2 emissions per tonne of cement down by 21%

Cement production increased 100% – absolute net CO2 only 52% • New target – 25% lower emissions per tonne of cement than 1990

benchmark by 2015

• World population to increase to more than 8 billion by 2030

• By 2030, 70% of the global population will be living in cities, compared to 50% today

• Improvement of city infrastructures supports CO2reduction

Population growth and urbanization will increase demand for construction materials

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Population growth, socio-economic development, and adaptation to climate change will increase the demand for construction products. Demand for construction materials has increased over the past decades and demand will continue to increase in the coming decades. For example, the production of cement, has increased by about 1600 Mt since 1970. The majority of this production growth has taken place in developing countries and notably in China. As a consequence about 70% of cement is consumed in developing countries. Population growth and socio-economic development have been responsible for the increase in the consumption of construction material in the past. Going forward these two trends plus the need to adapt to climate change impacts will drive the demand increase for construction materials. World population is expected to increase from 6.8 billion today to more than 8 billion by 2030. These population increases are a strong construction material demand driver since a more populous world requires a large infrastructure consisting of transport systems, buildings and other structures

• Second most widely used product after water • Forms the foundation of economic development and prosperity• Modern infrastructure inconceivable without concrete • Due to long life cycle, reusability and low CO2 content concrete is one

of the most energy-efficient and eco-friendly materials

Concrete – a versatile building material for a modern infrastructure – is part of the solution

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Concrete is a versatile building material necessary for a functioning infrastructure. It is the second most widely used product after water and forms the foundation of economic development and prosperity. It is impossible to imagine a world without concrete, which is a versatile and durable construction material. Very little construction activity can be undertaken without the use of concrete. We use concrete every day. It is in the foundation of our houses, it is used to build roads, bridges, and sidewalks we use, and concrete pipes are used to transport water and sewage. It is quite literally the building block of modern society. It is important to distinguish cement from concrete. Concrete is the mixture we use to build structures. Cement is a powder that, when combined with water and aggregates, becomes the glue that binds the gravel and sand together and gives concrete its strength and rigidity. It constitutes approximately 15 percent of concrete’s volume.
