FEBRUARY 2018 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Building Bridges . . . Creating Connections Connect with Jesus Connect in Community Connect to Your Purpose and Mission in Life Brandenburg United Methodist Church will observe Ash Wednesday differently this year with a “come and go” imposition of ashes. The change is out of a desire to remain faithful to our churchwide small group study of The Story. The sanctuary will be available from 5:15 p.m. through 6:30 p.m. for prayer and med- itation (a handout to guide you through the process will be made available). Impo- sition of the ashes will take place between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. (before our Wednesday evening meal) and between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. (prior to Wednesday evening classes and groups). February 14, 2018 Let’s get messy! Brandenburg United Methodist Church is excited to launch Messy Church – a new expression of church that is fun, informative and definitely for those of us with messy lives (and that would be just about everyone). Messy Church is not intended as a replacement for Sunday morning worship attendance; rather it is a church for people outside church, providing an oasis of welcome and a safe space in which to thrive. Messy Church is about hospitality and fun – eating together, creat- ing together, playing together. Please join us on Saturday, February 24, in the Family Life Center for the first of what will be monthly Messy Church experiences. We will begin serving food at 5 p.m., and the evening will also include activities and Bible lessons. A planning session for the launch of Messy Church will be held Wednesday, January 31, either before or during the halftime meal. If you would like to help or if you have questions, please contact Val Goins at [email protected] or 502-551-2285. Food! Activities! Bible Lessons! Free & Open To All! Saturday Feb. 24

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renew-al program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Chris-tian disciples and leaders. The program’s approach seriously considers the model of Christ’s servanthood and encourages Christ’s disciples to act in ways appropriate to being “a servant of all.” For those interested in participating in the Walk to Emmaus, the next opportunity is coming soon. The Men’s Walk is March 8-11 (Thursday evening to Sunday after-

Take Time for Spiritual Renewalnoon). The Women’s Walk is the following weekend, March 15-18. We hope to have a very strong presence at these walks. Sandy Horan is our church’s liaison for the Elizabethtown Emmaus Community. If you have already been on the Walk to Emmaus and would like to become more deeply involved by being a sponsor, assist-ing with elements of the Walks or paritici-pating in a reunion group, please contact her at 270-422-2810 or [email protected].

Thank you to all who contributed fabric to the Nicaragua Mission Trip in January, 2018. Among the many projects that were accomplished, John Swanson along with Tom and Mary Beth McQuary delivered the fabric to two sewing schools – one

MISSION TO

for teenagers in Leon and the other for adults in Managua. It was so appreciated. In Leon, Mary Beth was asked to do a sewing project with the teens right after they dropped off the fabric. This came as a surprise, but she remembered the advice of Pastor Jeff, who told her to “be flex-ible!” The photo shows the drawstring bags that students worked on that afternoon. Perhaps someone recognizes the fabric! Mary Beth is now putting together a shoe box with ribbon and seam binding for the group from Georgia who will return to Leon in February. If you have something to donate, please drop off in the labeled box at the Atrium. Thank you in advance!

FEBRUARY CALENDAR Commission on The Way Forward

Heartland District EventTuesday, February 13

Most of us are anxious about the future of the United Methodist Church, unsure of what it will look like in the next few years. The Commis-sion on the Way Forward has been meeting over the last year and they have made a preliminary report to the Council of Bishops. There will be a district wide event to discuss the work of the Commission. Bishop Fairley and Julie Hager Love will host the event on Tuesday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Christ Church in Louisville. The event is for clergy and laity. We plan on tak-ing the church van. Please call the church office to reserve your seat on the van.

Happy February – the month of LOVE! We have been excited to jump back into youth in Jan-uary. Our Sunday night TRIBE TIME is back in action and our Wednesday nights are focusing on The Story, just as many of yours are. I wanted to take a few minutes to share some LOVE from the TRIBE: 1.) The LOVE our church showed on December 17 at the Annual Youth Bake Auction was a continued blessing. Thanks to your LOVE of sweets and donations, we raised nearly $1,400. THANK YOU! It costs about $800 a week to rent ONE 15-passenger van for our youth to travel to church camp or mission trips in the summer. We normally

Dear Families,

I hope you have all received your copies of The Story and are enjoying learning together. Following is our Sunday Schedule for February: Feb. 4 Chapter 3 Feb. 11 Chapter 4 Feb. 18 Chapter 5 Feb. 25 Chapter 6

We will be covering The Story in children’s church for children in kindergarten through grade 4. Children in grades 5 and 6 are invited to attend worship serv-ice and learn more during the sermon series. As a church, we are encouraging small group participation as we delve into The Story this year. Sunday School is a wonderful way for you and your children to be “on the same page” as you go deeper into The Story.

Blessings! Ms. Val

val goinS

need 2-3 of these for each trip and that exhausts a huge part of our budget, so this auction allows us the oppor-tunity to enjoy other events throughout the year. 2.) We LOVE participating in SERVE SUNDAYS the first Sunday of each month. Thank you for being pa-tient with our youth as they are stepping out of their comfort zones and learning how to serve in the church in a variety of capacities. I strongly believe these kinds of services NOW are fostering the church of our near future. 3.) We’d LOVE to have you share with us! Many of our youth are not familiar with members of our church just like many members of our church, who do not have youth age kiddos, are not familiar with our TRIBE. I’d love to have you share your STORY with our TRIBE on Sunday nights during TRIBE TIME at 6:30 p.m. Just a few minutes of your Christian journey and maybe even a brief devotion for us so that we can connect with our church members more. If you are interested and will-ing, please email me at [email protected] or call/text me at 270-668-7256 or grab me at church on Sundays or Wednesdays! I’d love to get you in front of our youth! Upcoming events that I could use some help/chap-erones/drivers for:Sunday, February 4 – Tribe Super Bowl Party in FLC. Primarily need food donations, clean-up help and chaperones. Saturday, February 17 – Paoli Peaks Ski/Tubing Trip. Drivers and chaperones needed.

As always, love in Christ, Kelly
