Building A Computer
Computer CaseHolds all the components of the computer
inside. Usually has built in fans that provide cooling
to the computer.
MotherboardConnects all the components of the computer.Provides electrical connection to other
computer components, so they can communicate amongst each other.
Video CardSome motherboards come with build it video
cards (like ours)The video card is what displays imagesThe video card market is basically run by
NVIDIA and ATIAlmost all of today's video card’s use the PCI
express motherboard interface.
CPUCPU stands for Central Processing UnitCarries out most of the computers functionsSometimes can be refereed to as the “brain”
or “heart” of the computer. Best known brands are AMD and Intel.
Hard DriveStores the computers data in one place. Can be “partitioned” to make use of it in a
better way. Splits the hard drive in pieces, so you can store
things in a better way, and safer.Reads and writes information.
DVD DriveOnly Input For optical Disk in a computer.Plays music, video, and data disks.Uses optical technology.
Memory (RAM)Where computer stores temporary data.Usually the more RAM, means data can be
processed faster.
Operating SystemIt is the part of the computer that the user
uses to run a program. There are many different types of operating
systems. There is Windows, Apple, and Linux.
Other hardwareSome hardware is not always necessary as it
comes built into the motherboard, or is not needed. One example is a sound card; they usually
come built into your motherboard.
Built VS BoughtWhen you build your own computer you will
save money. When you buy a computer built from a store
you spend more money, usually for the brand. It is possible to build a computer for around
$400, and match computers that cost a lot more when purchased from a store. Basically, if you have the know how to built
your own computer, you can save a lot of money.
The buildIt took us approximately 30-50 minutes to
build the computer, and some more to install the drivers and windows.
We were given $200 credit from NEIU to use at Best Buy, and we added about $100 more to finish it. Had we been given the $200 to spend online it
could have saved us quite a bit of money.

QuestionsWhat do you think the reason is that so many
people just pay more and buy a computer that is already built?
Would you build your own next time, after you saw how EASY it is?
ReferenceThe whole project was done from memory,
and we knew it. However, we planned to use this website if we got stuck

Field TripWe went to Micro Center and Tiger Direct to
purchase the parts we needed to finish the build.
Both are large stores with everything you need to build your own computer
