Letter from the Board ChairPlanting Trees for the FutureIn 2009, a group of people saw an opportunity to help build a brighter future for the citizens of Washington County. The opportunity they saw was a tool that people could use to support their favorite charities; to give hope to people in need; to fund great projects; to leave a legacy. This tool is the Washington County Community Foundation.

It’s hard to believe that in the five years since then the foundation has grown from an idea to $496,485 spread over several different funds which you can learn more about later in this report. One of these funds is the Opportunity Fund, an unrestricted grant fund in which donations are invested to provide a permanent income. That income is used to provide grants to local nonprofits and community projects. In the last four years, grants from this fund have assisted projects scattered around the county and for people of all ages: for youth sport team safety equipment; fire department safety equipment; educational programs; beautification projects; recreational equipment; and for health care programs as well as others. It has been a tremendously rewarding experience to have been involved in this venture.

When I think about how the community foundation can be used to support and grow the county, I think about the people who first settled here. How they built the schools, libraries, parks, and health care facilities; helped their neighbors in need; and improved the quality of life for everyone in their communities. I’m thankful for their foresight, generosity, and commitments to make our community a great place to live, work, play, and raise our families. A Greek proverb sums it up best: “A society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” In the years to come, many people will be able to “sit in the shade” because of the generosity of the foundation donors.

2013-2014 DonorsThe most important element in the Foundation is our donors because without them we would not exist. They are what keeps the Foundation strong and successful. Funds & Grants

    Organization Funds

The Washington County Opportunity Fund is an unrestricted grant fund that provides the board of directors the flexibility to respond to the changing needs of the community. Grants from this fund are awarded through a competitive application process and support a wide variety of charitable causes and nonprofit organizations. Donations of any size to this fund will continue to make our area a brighter place to live.

Funding for this grant program comes from donations, memorials, and other gifts to the Opportunity Fund. Gifts of any size are welcome additions to this important community grant fund and will help earn a 50% match from the Kansas Health Foundation’s GROW II matching grant program.

Establishing an endowment at the Foundation enables nonprofit organizations to build a permanent and bright future. Helping them fulfill their individual missions now and forever is one way that we achieve our own mission.

Part of our mission in making Washington County a brighter place to live is to meet charitable community needs through grants. Since inception, WCCF has awarded almost $20,000 in grants that support a broad range of charitable causes—some donor directed and some determined by our board of directors. It is the opportunity to make an impact that makes us feel blessed to be part of this organization.

    Donor Advised Funds

Helping students achieve success and have a bright future is a rewarding experience for many donors. Scholarship funds allow donors to provide educational opportunities for graduates of certain schools, for specific funds of study, or for study at particular institutions.

Donor advised gives donors the opportunity to make the future brighter by actively engaging them in the grantmaking process. It is similar to a private foundation but with less hassle and better tax advantages. Donors can choose what charities to support through their fund while the Foundation handles the investment, administration and correspondence.Current FundsBuckshot & Christine Buchanan Donor Advised FundLarry R. Funds & Grants (Cont’d)Designated FundsSupporting your favorite charity is easy to do with a designated fund. Donors can designate one or more charities within one fund and the Foundation administers annual grants from the fund in the donor’s name, forever. If the charity designated no longer exists in the future, the funds will be redirected to a similar charitable need, ensuring that your community’s future will be bright no matter what happens.Current FundsKeenan Jellison-Knock Fine Arts Scholarship FundKansas Health Foundation Operating Fund for Washington CountyKSDS Assistance Dogs Designated Fund

A Bright and Healthy FutureHelping Kansas communities build permanent resources to improve the health of local residents is one of the main goals of the Kansas Health Foundation’s GROW II goal, and it shows! Since participating in GROW II, the Foundation has earned more than $16,000 in matching grant dollars to specifically support the public health of Washington County. From our public health funds, we have granted $1,159 to two different projects and programs and these figures will only continue to grow. In addition to supporting public health, GROW II has also helped leverage over $250,000 in new endowed gifts to other funds at the Foundation, keeping Washington County a bright and vibrant place to live.
