Success Story

The UltraShift PLUS transmissions in Bailey’s fl eet are a part of the Vocational Construction Series (VCS), which has an overall gear ratio of 20:1, and has been designed with deep reduction gearing and multiple high-speed reverse. This helps fl eets like Bailey Trucking to best meet the needs of jobs that requires extensive operation in reverse.

Result

Bailey immediately saw an increase in fuel effi ciency on trucks with the UltraShift PLUS transmission compared to his torque-converter trucks. “Right now we are seeing 1.5 miles per gallon better fuel consumption,” he says. “With 50 trucks, that adds up to signifi cant savings.”

Other benefi ts of the transmission that Bailey cites includes less wear and tear on the tires, furthering his lifecycle cost savings. “The automatic transmissions have a constant pull — all the time — because torque is constantly being applied to the tires. Conversely, the UltraShift PLUS has a clutch that frees up the wheels whenever you’re shifting gears,” he says. “We’re seeing about 15% longer tire life with the Eaton transmissions. Again, that’s signifi cant savings.”

Bailey believes the automated transmissions also contribute to safer vehicle operation because of the two-pedal design that allows drivers to have two hands on the steering wheel at all times. In addition, maneuverability is right where he wants it to be, and so is the service he gets from his Roadranger support team.

“Overall, I would have to say that the decision to go with UltraShift PLUS was a very good one,” Bailey says, adding that his next truck purchase will defi nitely include the Eaton UltraShift PLUS transmission. “The transmissions are defi nitely helping us be profi table.”

With nearly 50 tri-axle and quad-axle dump trucks, Bailey Trucking’s daily challenge is getting in and out of demanding job sites safely and as quick as possible — all without breaking any truck components.

Based in Yoder, IN, Bailey Trucking does a little bit of everything from commercial work, home building, stockpiling, and road and highway maintenance to spreading driveways for private individuals. Owner Jerry Bailey has a long-standing fondness for dump trucks and started the company in 1981 with just four trucks. Today, his fl eet includes a mix of Volvo, Sterling and Freightliner nameplates.

Due to the severe-duty cycle of his fl eet, Bailey pays careful attention to how he specs the dump trucks. “When purchasing new trucks, I always get the heaviest heavy-duty rear ends and other components that are the most robust I can fi nd so I do not have to worry about breakdowns,” Bailey says.

Some sites are tougher to maneuver than others, but the trucks must pull through. “We are all about pleasing the customer or contractor,” Bailey adds. “Sometimes that means taking their stone and sand into a place that you think you might not be able to get to. But we usually end up getting there — and out of there.”

Aside from ensuring performance, controlling rising fuel costs and keeping safety risks at a minimum are top concerns for the veteran trucker. To achieve all his goals and remain profi table, Bailey recently decided to experiment with a different type of transmission.

Solution

As a longtime user of manual and torque-converter automatic designs, Bailey wasn’t satisfi ed with the amount of fuel consumption on the trucks — nor was he satisfi ed with the premature wear on his vehicles’ tires that resulted from the automatics, so he knew it was time for a change.

“When we placed an order for new Freightliner trucks, we decided to take a look at the new Eaton UltraShift® PLUS automated manual transmissions,” Bailey says. “We’ve had them now for six months and have been very much impressed with the performance.”

Available for linehaul and vocational use, Eaton UltraShift PLUS automated transmissions offer application-specifi c performance features and represent a wide range of new customized transmission designs for virtually any given application. All launches and shifts are automated with the use of a self-adjusting electronic actuator for fast, smooth engagements.

Applications

vocational markets is increased driver alertness. Drivers can focus on their surroundings rather than watching the tachometer and worrying about being in the most appropriate gear. Another benefi t of automation is that it allows all drivers to maximize fuel effi ciency. This has become increasingly important at a time when fewer entry-level drivers have experience driving a manual vehicle of any type. “You’re never going to beat an owner-operator who has been driving for 20 years and knows how to drive a manual 18-speed and can see the road ahead of them,” says Molly Doyle, automation and vocational sales manager with Eaton. “But when you’re talking about owning a fl eet of 50 dump trucks and you have maybe three drivers that fi t the profi le, you can expect that the UltraShift PLUS is going to help bring that fl eet average up.”

Certain standard features were also engineered into the series with vocational applications in mind. For instance, Creep Mode allows the vehicle to crawl at a slow, steady pace, making it ideal for precision operations such as pouring concrete. There is also Hill Start Aid, which holds the vehicle on a 1% or greater grade for up to 3 seconds, so the driver has suffi cient time to accelerate without rolling forward or back.

Fleets and owner-operators looking for an automated product can also enjoy peace of mind that they’re supported by the Roadranger® network, and can be serviced at any OEM dealership. And because the UltraShift PLUS is based on a manual gearbox, it is fully integrated with the engine brake for greater control on grades compared to an automatic torque-converter transmission.

Doyle also acknowledged fl eets who’ve been well served by their manual transmissions might not be eager to make the switch. “If you’re confi dent in your drivers, you’re not having non-warranty maintenance issues or some of the challenges that are causing fl eets to go to automation, then a manual is still a fantastic option. It’s a robust product,” Doyle says. “But if you have business needs that are pushing you toward automation, we have just as good of a solution from an automated perspective as we do on the manual side. No other transmission manufacturer can offer you both.”

Just outside Prince George, British Columbia, a fully-laden timber truck carrying a gross weight of 168,000 pounds crawls deliberately down a 15% grade, its brakes as cool as the driver’s demeanor. Logging is just one of the many vocational applications that at one time were thought too rigorous for automated manual transmissions.

But in today’s automated transmission lineup, Eaton’s UltraShift PLUS series includes 47 models so vocational as well as on-highway fl eets can spec the transmission to their exact needs while also reaping the benefi ts of automation. The series stays in line with many manual transmission features, such as maintaining the gear ratios, that operators have come to trust.

But why weren’t earlier automated transmissions widely seen in vocational fl eets? Eaton says the transformation was possible because of the UltraShift PLUS’ electronic clutch actuator, which allows for smoother, more precise shifting, especially at low speeds.

According to Ryan Trzybinksi, Eaton’s commercial transmission development and product planning manager, the original UltraShift used a centrifugal clutch, meaning that as you sped up the RPMs, the weights inside the clutch would expand outward and the clutch would engage, but that resulted in a rough start on early gears. “The new UltraShift PLUS uses electronic

actuation, meaning we can very quickly pull back the bearing, disengage and re-engage, and perform shifts regardless of engine RPM,” he says. “This enables you to have smoother and improved low-speed maneuverability.”

Adding to that, the clutch is a self-adjusting, dual-plate ceramic clutch offering superior durability that also improves shift engagements and low-speed operability.

This improved low-speed performance and versatility make the vocational series of UltraShift PLUS appealing in mixer and construction applications, among others, as well as in some of the most rigorous vocations such as logging, oilfi eld and other heavy-haul needs. In fact, the 18-speed UltraShift PLUS VXP (Vocational Extreme Performance) has no GVW limitations. Eaton has been demonstrating the UltraShift PLUS capabilities at its Michigan test track. “One of the trucks we run in our test environment is loaded to 140,000 pounds (63,500 kilograms) and we can go heavier than that,” Trzybinski explains. “The heavy-haul drivers and fl eet owners that come in here and drive that truck on a 15% grade, stop it, back it up the hill and stop it again, really see the value.”

Maximizing Control With UltraShift PLUS®

The UltraShift PLUS® V- and M-series transmissions provide maximum driver control for forward and reverse operations, whether on a steep grade or handling severe loads.

Rounding out Eaton’s transmission lineup beyond linehaul, both the Vocational and Performance series transmissions in the UltraShift PLUSfamily balance performance with fuel economy — must-haves for any vocational fl eet.

Vocational Series The V-Series transmissions range from on- and off-road use to severe service and includes a larger range of forward and reverse speeds. Starting with the VAS transmission, it is best suited for many standard vocational applications such as fl atbed trucks used in landscaping. Adding another reverse gear, the VCS 8LL is designed for fl eets needing fl exible reverse for longer-distance backing and deep reduction.

In other V-Series transmissions, the VMS 9ALL is best for construction

sites, where low-speed maneuverability is required. The VHP, with 13 forward speeds, keeps on-highway fuel economy in mind while still being able to tackle moderate on- and off-road vocational demands.

The most severe-duty transmission in Eaton’s lineup is VXP, which can run against harsh off-road environments, steep grades and heavy loads.

Performance SeriesEaton’s M-Series of UltraShift PLUStransmissions has 13 or 18 forward gears to give fl eets additional on-highway and linehaul options, while keeping severe performance requirements in mind. The MHP transmission, for example, is designed for on-highway fl eets hitting steep grades. The other M-Series transmission is the MXP, which allows

fl eets to carry extreme loads on large grades and can be optimized for performance or fuel economy.

Eaton AutomationAll Eaton UltraShift PLUS Vocational and Performance series transmissions include the latest automated shifting technology, “active shifting,” which is a load-based feature allowing the clutch to actively open and close during a shift or remain connected to the fl ywheel. This feature is possible due to the Electronic Clutch Actuator, providing smooth and quick shifting — and allowing the driver to focus on the job, rather than the next gear.

Other features include Hill Start Aid, a dual-plate ceramic clutch; creep mode; an oil-level sight glass for easier maintenance checks and other features such as engine overspeed protection.

Transmission Spotlight

If a fl eet were to chart the miles per gallon (MPG) of its drivers using a line graph, with the number of drivers along the side axis and MPG along the bottom, it would likely appear as a bell curve, with the majority of drivers falling somewhere in between the best and worst performers and the most fuel-effi cient drivers — the minority — appearing on the far right.

There may be some 6 MPG drivers on the far left of the chart and some 8 MPG drivers on the right. But in most cases, the majority of drivers will fall somewhere in between, representing the hump of the bell curve.

Unfortunately, those highly sought 8 MPG drivers are often the minority, and it’s estimated the fuel consumption variance between a 6 MPG driver and an 8 MPG driver is as much as $20,000 per year.

Looking at it another way, if the 6 MPG driver is burning through $10,000 more fuel in a year than the 8 MPG driver, a fl eet — assuming a 5% profi t margin — may have to generate $200,000 in additional revenue to make up the difference. So:

$10,000 fuel cost / 5% profi t margin = $200,000 additional revenue

With that in mind, there’s little wonder why more fl eets are looking to Eaton® automated manual transmissions to help them improve their fl eet-wide fuel economy.

For example, the Eaton UltraShift PLUS series comes in 47 models

Smashing the

engine to convey RPM. They have a set of eyes (score one for the humans!), which, despite all the technological wizardry built into an automated transmission’s electronic control unit, is impossible to replicate and gives these drivers the ability to better judge the profi le of the road ahead.

These drivers may represent a thinning segment of the professional driver population, but the good news is they still have the option of selecting a manual transmission such as the proven 8LL, FR-Series or the new Fuller Advantage Series.

As Doyle says, fl eet customers and owner-operators will always enjoy the luxury of choice Eaton provides. “Our reliability numbers are really good on the automated side and we’re really proud of the work we’ve done from a quality standpoint,” she says. “I think we have a good value proposition for both our manual and automated customers.”

general rule, the fuel economy variance between any given fl eet’s best- and worst-performing drivers is as great as 30%. The simplest way to bring parity to the ranks — to shatter the bell curve — is to equip trucks with UltraShift PLUS or the Fuller Advantage Series automated transmission. In fact, Eaton often advises fl eets looking to test automated transmissions to put the fi rst units in the hands of their worst-performing drivers and watch as their fuel economy improves.

As well, improvements are most pronounced in applications that require frequent shifting, such as city driving or regional haul applications.

Luxury of ChoiceIt is important to keep in mind that automation isn’t for everyone. There are still many drivers who view shifting as an art form, and wouldn’t have it any other way. A masterful shifter rarely needs to consult the tachometer, instead relying on the sound of the

for linehaul and vocational use, and each offers maximum power capacity, superior acceleration and low-speed manueverability. With new Electric Clutch Actuation enabling intelligent shift selection, drivers can make better decisions when they’re in a tough spot.

Two Hands on the WheelThere are many advantages to running automated transmissions; the potential fuel mileage improvement is just one of them. Another is less training time required to teach progressive shifting, so those resources can be allocated toward teaching equally important skills such as defensive driving.

With the help of automated shifting, new hires can become comfortable with the equipment more quickly and can immediately begin producing fuel economy that’s on par with a fl eet’s most seasoned drivers.

Taking shifting out of the hands of the driver provides safety benefi ts as well. Drivers can focus on their surroundings and keep two hands on the steering wheel at all times. Driving an automated transmission-equipped truck also reduces wear and tear on a driver’s knee and elbow joints. In stop-and-go traffi c, not having to depress the clutch pedal hundreds of times can result in a fresher driver at the end of a shift.

A Changing Driver PoolOf course, there remain many experienced drivers who are adept at shifting gears and relish the challenge. And some of these drivers may even be able to match the fuel economy performance of the UltraShift PLUS.

However, these seasoned drivers are becoming the minority and are increasingly more diffi cult to fi nd. They’re being replaced with a younger generation of drivers who, in many cases, didn’t grow up driving a manual transmission car, let alone double-clutching their way through as many as 18 gears. Some fl eets have discovered that automation is the only way this new generation of drivers can quickly equal the effi ciency of their more seasoned peers.

“If you’re talking about a 30-year-old, the likelihood they’ve driven a manual transmission passenger car goes down,” says Molly Doyle, automation and vocational sales manager with Eaton. It has been widely said that as a

Success Story

the UltraShift PLUS, just by the throttle position during operations, you could easily see that the Eaton transmissions were “much more effi cient.” He adds that

the UltraShift PLUS transmissions are also passing the tests of weight and winter.

“I had concerns before we even got into the winter maintenance season as to how well the automated transmissions would perform under icy, heavy conditions. My concern was the transmission would downshift unexpectedly and cause the driver to lose control,” Bartholomew says. “Well, the drivers are saying the trucks are holding to the ground correctly and the transmissions are shifting very well.”

On braking, Bartholomew says the UltraShift PLUS transmissions “aggressively downshift, and with the assistance of an engine retarder, walk you right down to a couple miles per hour.” A torque-converter automatic, on the other hand, drivers must apply continuous brake pressure since the driveline doesn’t benefi t from the engine to slow the truck once the torque converter unlocks. “I’m hoping to see increased brake life, even better than the manuals,” he says.

Bartholomew believes those same drivers are safer operators due to the hands-free shifting feature of automated transmissions. He adds that driveline-related problems, which were especially troublesome in the winter, have been signifi cantly reduced. Reverse speeds are also just where they need to be, he adds, and the Hill Start Aid feature is giving his drivers better control over their vehicles.

“But what really impressed me the most is the customer support that Eaton has provided us. They have been very good in getting us whatever we need with training and dealing with any issues we might have,” Bartholomew says, adding, “taking everything into account, UltraShift PLUS will defi nitely be our transmission of choice in future new truck orders.”

In southwestern Michigan, which ranks among the top 25 most snowed upon regions in the continental United States, it is the Kalamazoo County Road Commission’s responsibility to remove that snow, which averages 70 inches annually in the area, from more than 1,260 miles of road.

Travis Bartholomew, general superintendent, has to make certain that the Kalamazoo County Road Commission has the best available equipment ready for the harsh winters, presenting the commission with its most daunting challenge. “At the end of the day, these trucks come in looking like ice balls,” Bartholomew says. “I often think, ‘how does that truck function under those conditions?’”

Bartholomew, who started working with the Road Commission in 1995 as a maintenance worker and truck driver, adds that the weight of auxiliary equipment on the trucks also tests the mettle of his vehicles. “When the trucks are new, we have to install dump boxes, underbody scrapers, plow hitches, hydraulic systems and other equipment,” he says. “The additional equipment is more than what a typical construction truck is designed to accommodate.”

Nonetheless, last year Bartholomew needed to add another weighty new component on his trucks: a side-mounted wing plow. At that point he knew it was time to try something new. “We needed

to simplify things and provide some help for our drivers,” he says.

Solution

Bartholomew was looking for a transmission that would deliver the most effi ciency, and started off by comparing the Eaton® UltraShift PLUS automated transmission to a torque-converter automatic. “We did not see what we wanted with the torque-converter automatic,” he says.

So, changing up the specs from all manual transmissions, Bartholomew brought in Eaton UltraShift PLUS Vocational Construction Series (VCS) automated transmissions on an order of four new International 7600 trucks.

The UltraShift PLUS VCS model features the highest torque capacity in the trucking industry, ranging from 1,050 lb.-ft. through 2,250 lb.-ft. In addition to exceptional startability and gear ratio coverage, each has important driveline safeguards such as auto gear selection, stall prevention, and engine overspeed and clutch abuse protection.

10 VOCATIONAL TRANSMISSION NEWS

Spec’ing

1. Slow-speed ManeuverabilityThe challenge for many dump truck applications is they need to get up to highway speeds but also operate around a jobsite with complete control. That means you need a transmission with good slow-speed maneuverability. For example, with Eaton’s automated manual transmissions, you could start at the UltraShift PLUS VCS with 10 forward and 3 reverse speeds for fl eets needing basic dump operations, or you can move all the way up to the UltraShift PLUS MXP with 18 forward and 4 reverse speeds. And for super-slow maneuverability, consider the UltraShift PLUS VMS. It has the highest starting gear ratio available. 2. Reverse Speed RequirementsMost dump applications require extensive operations in reverse. For short distances, 1-2 reverse speeds will probably suit the application, but spec the reverse ratio set that matches your job site requirements.

3. Off-Road ConditionsOff-road driving can be challenging in mud, soft sand and rutty roads. That’s why fl eets should seriously consider an automated manual transmission. It’s programmed to maintain constant power to the wheels, plus the driver can take control with manual mode to keep it in a low gear.

4. Max GCWOverall, the GCW and material type that you’re hauling are going to affect your transmission choice. For example, if

you’re hauling more than 110,000 lbs., it will probably be best to go with a 13- or 18-speed transmission over a 10-speed so you have better performance.

5. Auxiliary TransmissionBolted behind your transmission, an auxiliary transmission is typically used for additional gear reduction for job site work and hauling heavy loads on steep grades, which can be helpful for numerous dump applications.

6. Maximum GradesFor steep grades, fl eets will want a transmission with a higher amount of forward speeds. An 18-speed has smaller step sizes and overall gear ratio, providing more control in mountainous terrain. Eaton’s automated transmissions also have features that help the driver like Hill Start Aid and Skip Shifting. Hill Start Aid prevents unintended rolling for a controlled launch, and Skip Shifting, a load-based feature, allows the transmission to skip gears for smooth acceleration.

7. PTO RequirementsFor most dump applications, you’re looking at a power take-off (PTO) with either a 6-bolt or 8-bolt design, or Eaton also has its optional Thrushaft PTO (on UltraShift PLUS VAS/VCS/VMS models), providing a more compact, rear-mounted PTO. What’s more, Eaton transmissions provide PTO integration so you can transfer a PTO from a manual to automated Eaton transmission and vice versa.

7 Considerations in Spec’ing a

Dump Truck Transmission

Consult with your transmission, chassis, and engine providers when spec’ing your dump truck transmission. See the entire Eaton transmission lineup at

Your Turn Event

Get ‘Your Turn’ at Eaton’sProving Grounds

Eaton provides the trucks and the course, while you get toput their products to the test.

Started in 2012 as a way to showcase the vocational capabilities of the UltraShift PLUS automated manual transmission, Eaton’s “Your Turn” events, have grown into a must-attend activity for fl eets that are in the market for a dump, mixer or heavy-haul truck.

“The ‘Your Turn’ idea goes back to what made you fall in love with trucks when you were a kid playing in the dirt!” said Molly Doyle, Eaton’s automation sales manager. “We provide the trucks and the course, and let you have ‘Your Turn.’”

This hands-on and all-inclusive, paid customer event is held at the Eaton Proving Grounds in Marshall, MI. Participants have the opportunity to operate trucks in a working vocational environment and experience fi rsthand how the UltraShift PLUS transmission

performs across multiple applications. There’s even a head-to-head comparison with a torque-converter automatic in challenging off-road terrain — such as mud, water and an eye-opening heavy haul of 140,000 pounds on 8% and 15% grades.

On-site experts at the event answer questions and help drivers discover how the UltraShift PLUS fi ts their individual business needs.

“We developed the Your Turn events

for our customers, and knowing how important the dealership is to a vocational fl eet, we invite the salesperson to attend as well,” Doyle noted. “We host several OEM-specifi c events each year, and this year we also developed our fi rst-ever Spanish-only event for Latino customers.”

By all accounts, these Your Turn events have been a huge hit. By the end of 2014 nearly 1,500 people will have attended the 29 events since starting the program.

Roadranger

Powerful Partnerships: How Roadrangers

Spec the Right TransmissionVocational Roadranger® expert Brad Cole breaks down how he and the Roadranger team work with fl eets of all shapes and sizes to tailor the right transmission specs for the job.

Q: How do you size up a fl eet’s situation, i.e., the demands on the fl eet or its drivers?

Brad Cole, Roadranger Vocational Expert: It’s hard to get onto future business without discussing the old business. So before we go in, we do our homework to understand the customer’s business, growth objectives, markets served, etc. Most of our Roadrangers have been in their position for a while, so they have a pretty good feel for the fl eets.

From there, we’ll go in, whether it’s a cold call or an established relationship, and we meet with the fl eet or shop manager. We fi rst review how the current product is performing. We can then explain what’s coming down the pipeline and the next drivetrain offerings.

But fi rst, we have to make sure that we have a real good idea of what they currently run and what their expectations are, or if they’re trying to go a direction different than what they have in the past.

Another thing we have to look at is typical operating conditions and terrain. I’m in the western part of the country,

so we deal with mountains. A 13- or an 18-speed is best because it allows the trucks to climb by giving them smaller steps between gear ratios, whereas on the East Coast, typically a 10-speed is a good spec.

Q: How are certain needs addressed through specifi cations, such as manual or automated, or selecting options like Hill Start Aid?

Cole: Driver retention is one of the things that fl eets tend to struggle with the most — the turnover rate in trucking is tremendous and the cost to train new drivers is a huge expense. So if they can retain who they have and make those guys profi table for them, it’s a win/win for everybody.

So on our automated products, for example, we have features that aren’t available from our competitors. We have automated our former broad range of manual products, thus we have automated transmissions that can go into many types of applications. Whereas our competitors, on the other hand, have smaller offerings and try to force that fl eet’s application to fi t the transmission, instead of the other way around.

The automated products are particularly good with new drivers or with fl eets that have “hot seat” operations where a driver is constantly getting into a different truck, which means there’s less accountability with the drivers.

In those types of applications, the built-in driveline protection and driver safety features make an automated product the only way to go. The fl eets know that too. It’s not a real hard sell for us. They know that when they’re dealing with new, inexperienced people with no accountability that the driver-induced failure rates skyrocket.

Q: How would certain specs be discussed based on costs?

Cole: The fi rst priority is putting the right product in the application at the best value to the customer. Customers must weigh the advantages and performance of an 18 speed over a lower-cost 10 speed in the markets that the trucks operate.

Q: Knowing that fl eets look to gain a competitive edge, how does that lead you to product recommendations?

Cole: Fleets tend to downplay what their trucks are doing, or they may not know exactly how much weight they’re going to be hauling. So we have to get the real numbers to make sure we’re spec’ing the right product, and really act as an auditor.

We go in and look at the trucks, we see where they’re going and even ride with drivers. We will give them a candid response. We know these trucks from bumper to mud fl ap, so we use our expertise and our integrity to get them the right product.

“If you need to ask [Roadrangers] a question, they always get back to us right away. They have also helped us out with programming the transmissions. They get right in the truck with you and fi gure out what needs to be done.” – Jerry Bailey, Owner, Bailey Trucking

SOLO ADVANTAGE™ SELF-ADJUSTING CLUTCH

The Solo Advantage Self-Adjusting Clutch features exclusive technology that keeps the clutch in constant adjustment. It also features spring-loaded cams that adjust for proper clearance with every disengagement. If your truck has hydraulic linkage, Solo is the only way to go.

If you replace a truck with hydraulic linkage with anything other than a Solo Advantage, it is diffi cult for the driver to detect the need for adjustment. A clutch operating out of adjustment creates excess heat and friction, which diminish clutch life. If unaddressed, this results in damage to the clutch and hydraulic release system components.
