Let the journey begin!

A DESIGN CLASSICThis introductory booklet takes its inspiration and design from the original brochure that was proudly created by Jaguar to promote the E-type in 1961.

Welcome to Build the Jaguar E-type,

THE JAGUAR E-TYPE G.T. F IXED HEAD COUPÉ

1:8 SCALE

From the moment it was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, it was obvious that the E-type was destined to be one of the all-time great cars. For a start, it looked like nothing else, with a style and shape that led no less an authority than rival manufacturer Enzo Ferrari to declare it the most beautiful car in the world. That beauty went far more than skin deep, as the car was also a paragon of speed, handling and sophistication that could equal or outdo any of its contemporaries in every department. Not only that, but this sensational new sports car was also affordable, undercutting virtually everything in its class. Everyone wanted an E-type, and celebrities from movie stars to royalty pulled strings to buy one – as did racing drivers and well-heeled drivers of taste. Jaguar went on to sell an astonishing 72,500 during a production run that lasted for 13 years, adapting to changing times through the Series 1, 1½, 2 and 3, with different engines and body styles along the way. But for most enthusiasts, the ultimate example was the original fixed-head coupé Series 1 that stunned the world’s press in 1961, with its classic six-cylinder 3.8 litre engine and astounding performance.

THE WORLD’S BEST-LOVED CLASSIC

Jaguar company founder Sir William Lyons proudly introduces his new creation at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, to the astonishment of the world’s media.

Jaguar’s uniquely effective rear suspension unit was one of the keys to the E-type’s class-leading handling.

Purposeful and packed with instrumentation, the E-type’s cockpit looked more like that of a racing car or aeroplane, with none of the ‘gentleman’s club’ touches that typified Jaguar’s traditional saloons.

More than 50 years after its launch, the E-type consistently tops polls as the coolest, most stylish car ever built. Its status and high value today reflect the enormous impact it had right from the start.

Under the sleek bodywork designed by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer was sophisticated, modern engineering that included fully independent suspension, disc brakes on all four wheels, and Jaguar’s superb XK engine. Driver and passenger sat in a monocoque (chassis-less) shell – dubbed the ‘tub’ – made from welded steel. Ahead of them, hidden away under the complex, curvaceous bonnet, the engine and front wheels were carried on a tubular subframe.

The mighty double-overhead-cam XK engine was the cornerstone of Jaguar’s postwar success, powering everything from its all-conquering

race cars to its luxurious saloons. In its 3.8-litre form, it delivered a punchy 265bhp, propelling the sleek, aerodynamically efficient E-type

to a top speed just over the magic benchmark of 150mph. Company founder Sir William Lyons – an instinctively gifted stylist – had insisted that the engine not only had to be effective, it also had to look good.3.8 LITRE SERIES 1 JAGUAR SPECIFICATIONS

PREFINISHED PARTS

All the car’s metal and plastic parts are prefinished with an authentic British Racing Green paint – or real chrome plate – so there is no painting or polishing to do after assembly. Windows are moulded from crystal-clear ABS (the same material used for racing helmet visors), and the interior trim is made from real leather, metal or cloth materials, just like the original car’s.

AUTHENTIC MOULDED RUBBER TYRES

All four wheels (plus the spare) have tyres

made from real rubber.

GENUINE LEATHER SEAT CUSHIONS

The E-type’s upholstery is finished in real tan leather with hand-stitched seams.

PRECISION DIE-CAST METAL COMPONENTS

Accurately cast and superbly finished metal parts guarantee a perfect fit.

The model’s intricately detailed wire wheels have individual spokes that accurately replicate the original pattern, and feature the classic knock-off hub caps.

Building your miniature replica is designed to be as close as it’s possible to get to building the original or restoring a classic. Your Jaguar E-type is put together issue-by-issue using the parts provided with the magazine, plus clear photographs (like the ones below) that show you every step of the assembly process. All the pieces of the model accurately reflect the components used on the original cars, but they are also designed to fit together without needing any special skills or any tools beyond the simple ones provided in your kit. And everything is self-coloured, pre-painted or plated, so there’s no extra finishing to do!

ASSEMBLING YOUR MODEL

WORKING ON AN E-TYPEMaking this highly detailed model is a tribute to the expert engineers who created the original E-type. The cars were virtually hand-built in Browns Lane, Coventry, utilising many parts built in-house. Influenced by racing experience, the E-type’s designers employed cutting-edge technology rarely seen on road cars at the time – including fully independent suspension and disc brakes – while Malcolm Sayer designed the car’s aerodynamic body shell using experience from the aviation industry, giving the E-type its distinctive lines.

Like Jaguar cars themselves, your model E-type is superbly engineered from the highest-quality materials. But this stunning large-scale miniature replica is also designed to be easy for any classic car enthusiast to put together without specialised tools or previous modelling expertise – guaranteeing perfect results.

The large 1:8 scale means that every small detail can be rendered as accurately as possible, with many parts a simple push-fit, and others secured by miniature screws fitted with the tools provided.

Each assembly is a faithful replica of the original, based on a museum-

quality car and copied with the help of expert car historians and E-type restorers.

E-types were always assembled by

skilled craftsmen, and today, the thriving classic scene has given birth to a whole

industry of expert E-type restorers who can rebuild the cars to

as good as or better than original condition.

The E-type’s lightweight spoked wheels were a hallmark of Jaguar’s quality – as they are on your model. Individual steel spokes lace the chrome-plated rims to the quick-release hubs, which are fitted with Jaguar’s racing-style knock-off hub caps, as they were on the original cars. Every detail is faithfully rendered, down to the fact that the left and right hub caps are ‘handed’ (a feature which ensured they never came undone when the car was driven at speed).

AUTHENTIC SPOKED WHEELS

Under the bonnet is a scale replica of the XK power unit, assembled from separate components that help you appreciate the quality and sophistication of Jaguar’s engineering. You’ll fit the double overhead camshafts and complete the cylinder head, put together the crankcase and fit the carburettors, clutch and gearbox – all authentically made from high-quality materials.

THE JAGUAR STORY THE E-TYPE’S WORLD

Discover the extraordinary history of Jaguar and its visionary founder. Rising from humble beginnings, Sir William Lyons applied the simple philosophy that cars should offer performance, style, and value for money, taking Jaguar to world-beating triumph on the race-track, and the creation of iconic cars that include the E-type and cutting-edge modern designs.

The thrilling 150mph performance of the E-type meant that examples were taking to the track within weeks of the car’s launch, where these Grand Tourers quickly showed their ability to beat purpose-built racers (above).

The stunning lines of the E-type also saw it given pride of place as a design icon at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (top right).

Sporting precursors of the E-type include the rally- and race-proven

XK120 (right) and C-type (below).

Explore how the E-type achieved its status as the ultimate classic. Ever since it became an instant icon for the glamour and excitement of the Sixties, time has helped to cement the reputation of Jaguar’s sports car. Stars wanted to be seen in one, racers wanted to exploit the extraordinary performance, and E-types became a dream car for millions of enthusiasts.
