Pat’s first book, Sophie’s Squash, won the Golden Kite Award for best picture book text. It also won an Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Honor, a Charlotte Zolotow Honor and a Crystal Kite Award.

Some Things I’ve Learned From 30 Years of Helping Resource-Limited Families Read With Their ChildrenDR. GINA FRENCH Division Director of Community Pediatrics John A. Burns School of Medicine and Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children

Please see “Zoom Links to Concurrent Sessions” pages for the link to this session.

During this session we’ll briefly discuss the behavioral benefits of reading over video-based shared entertainment; the potential advantages of stories over scientific facts in changing hearts, minds, and behaviors; and a brief introduction to motivational interviewing as a method of encouraging behavioral change.

Dr. French is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician who runs the general pediatric clinic at Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children. She was born to a 19-year- old mother and a marine corporal who sat on either side of her cradle, reading. Her mother told her that if she could read, she could do anything. It turned out to be true. She spends much of her time spreading that good news to the families and children who come to see her, sharing the clinic’s Reach out and Read program.
