SOME

FACTS & FIGURESThe Buffalo City Municipality was established in 2000 through the amalgamation of previous coastal and inland transitional authorities. It consists of a number of settlements including the urban core of East London and its extended suburbs, the second-largest township in South Africa (Mdantsane), the historically-significant King William’s Town as well as the provincial administrative capital of Bhisho. A large number of rural villages also fall within its area of jurisdiction.

Buffalo City covers an area of about 2,700 square kilometres and is the sixth-largest local authority in South Africa measured by population.

The region has one of South Africa’s most diverse populations, closely reflecting the country’s demographics. While the home language of the majority of residents is isiXhosa, there are substantial minorities who speak either English or Afrikaans.

With over 300 days of sunshine annually, Buffalo City enjoys a moderate subtropical climate that favours an active outdoor lifestyle, allowing residents and visitors to engage in a wide variety of recreational pursuits throughout the year.

Buffalo City has 68km of pristine coastline that includes 10 tidal estuaries, 14 excellent beaches, a number of sites of great anthropological interest as well as endless opportunities for leisure and relaxation.

The developmental aspirations and successes of Buffalo City were acknowledged by national government when it was classified as a metropolitan municipality in 2012.

If you’re into braving the deep blue sea for a day of serious game fishing, the warm waters of the Eastern Cape coast provides one of the most productive angling-grounds in the world; or head for one of the local reefs and drop a line for one of many delicious local edibles – and if you choose to catch and release, that big one may well be around for your next visit as well.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, opportunities abound within 90 minutes’ drive of the city for hunting a variety of sustainably-managed trophy species including Cape Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, springbok and a variety of other antelope.

If you have a head for heights, the region offers spectacular opportunities for both rock-climbing and abseiling, with the famous cliffs of Morgan’s Bay providing an unforgettable rush for both beginners and experts alike, while for those who want to take to the skies for a bird’s-eye view, both the coastline and interior provide suitable thermal conditions and unique natural scenery for both paragliding and microlighting.

You could even take a helicopter-flip further along the coast for the photo-opportunity of a lifetime.

With East London boasting some of the world’s premier surfing locations such as Nahoon Reef, conditions are also often ideal for wind-surfing, ocean-kayaking, and yachting, while official launch-sites are easily accessible for power-boating or jetskiing.

Horse-riders can enjoy some of the finest coastal routes in the country, with mounts being available for hire to suit all riders.

Sporting enthusiasts keen for a taste of world-class action will find that Buffalo City has an abundance of attractions.

A water-sports destination second to none, East London boasts one of South Africa’s best aquatic facilities in the ever-popular Joan Harrison Swimming Complex, regularly playing host to a variety of national competitions in all age-groups, from juniors to veterans.

From cheering on the international stars of golf’s majors in the Africa Open, to rubbing shoulders with the cricket greats who launched their careers from the turf of local clubs…

From the intense rivalry of the world’s ultra-triathletes in the IronMan 70.3, to the iconic Surfers’ Challenge, ever-popular with the young and the not-so-young…

From the pulsating roar of motorsport on East London’s historic Grand Prix Circuit, to the annual Buffalo Regatta that draws rowers from across the nation…

Buffalo City offers a sporting adventure to treasure for those who love to cheer or to challenge.

A short drive from the city, you can get up close and personal with the majestic Big Five at an affordable private game reserve…

…or head out to sea to witness fi rst-hand “the greatest shoal on earth”, and the predator feeding-frenzy that accompanies the famous sardine run.

Birders will fi nd much to fascinate in the multiple biomes of the region, with an abundance of species to be found in forest, grassland, riverine and coastal areas. Thrill to the sound of the Fish Eagle in the Gonubie River valley, the rare Black Oystercatcher that breeds along our coastline or the highly endangered Cape Parrot fl ying overhead the stunning indigenous forests of the Amathole mountains.

Less than an hour by good tar road, the famous pont will ferry you across the Kei River to indulge in an extravagant Wild Coast Saturday seafood buffet, while a bit off the beaten track, you can marvel at the breath-taking cliffs of Morgan’s Bay and the pristine beauty of Double Mouth, rated one of South Africa’s ten most beautiful camping getaways.

If trails are your thing, a number of backpacking and “slackpacking” options are on offer, depending on your personal choice and degree of fi tness and experience.

While the well-known Amathole Trail runs for more than 110km through mountainous terrain and indigenous forests and extends from the Maden Dam (near King William’s Town) to Hogsback, shorter stretches can be hiked depending on the time available.

The Strandloper Trail follows the coast from Kei Mouth to East London, traversing some of the

most spectacular coastal scenery in South Africa. Hikers can choose to sleep overnight in rustic but comfortable huts or the more luxurious family hotels that dot the route.

A multitude of scenic day-walks or shorter rambles in both our coastal and inland areas as well as the hinterland cater for all ages and levels of fi tness, with the Hogsback area providing an especially memorable variety of scenery throughout the four seasons.

If you’re looking for a chance to lower your handicap, you’ll always be welcome to visit the unique East London Golf Club, home of the Africa Open, or the equally scenic West Bank Club, where antelope roam the fairways and a pod of dolphins is likely to be spotted from the club-house.

Further afi eld, you could take a scenic drive and enjoy something different at the magnifi cent Gary Player course at the Fish River Sun, or rub shoulders with the friendly locals at the Stutterheim Country Club, savouring the clean mountain air with the Kologha forests just a chip and a putt away as a backdrop.

Unearthed in the 1960s at Nahoon Point, the famous early-human “fossil” footprints (now housed in the East London Museum) are widely regarded as the oldest of their kind in the world, providing compelling evidence of early human habitation of southern Africa over 100,000 years ago.

Evidence of early hunter-gatherer groups of modern humans who inhabited coastal and inland areas of the region for thousands of years is to be found in ancient rock art as well as the variety of cultural artefacts preserved for posterity.

Later, settlement of the region by Nguni pastoralists created a region with a rich and varied indigenous landscape and a tribal population that remained largely stable until the advent of European colonisation.

With the pace of British colonial expansion gaining momentum in the 1800s, indigenous populations fought numerous wars against land dispossession and displacement over a period of almost 100 years.

Following the establishment of the Union of South Africa in 1910, the region played a critical role in leading indigenous resistance to disenfranchisement and minority domination, with numerous icons of South Africa’s freedom struggle having been born and educated here.

The Buffalo City region’s fractious past is refl ected both in its urban and rural landscapes, with strong British infl uences evident in the architecture of historical buildings of both East London and King William’s Town, while a number of smaller settlements and farms bear names of German origin. The remains of a series of numerous colonial forts and battlefi eld sites can also be visited, with professional tour guides available.

The numerous monuments and memorials to those who sacrifi ced their lives in past confl icts – in East London, Duncan Village, Mdantsane, King William’s Town, Ginsberg and Bhisho – invite the visitor to refl ect on the meaning of our history and its relevance to our common future.

Recently erected on East London’s sea-front, a monument of a different kind stands. Donated by the Italian people, the sculpture of “Multi-cultural Man” is one of only seven world-wide, and the only one erected on the African continent. Intended to symbolise the universal humanity of all cultures, the monument gives hope that Buffalo City and South Africa can look forward to a future that holds the promise of a better life for all its people.

Buffalo City’s fascinating natural history is also refl ected in a host of attractions such as the original specimen of the “living fossil”, the coelacanth, housed in the East London Museum.

Located as it is no more than 80 minutes fl ight from South Africa’s major cities, the city is well-located geographically to take advantage of its central and coastal location. Having always been well-serviced in catering for groups of between 20 and 400, the city upped its game in 2009 with the opening of the world-class East London International Convention Centre (ELICC), a state-of-the-art facility that is able to host more than 2,000 delegates for conventions or trade shows.

Located a mere 15 minutes from the city’s newly-refurbished airport, the ELICC boasts the unique distinction of being the fi rst convention centre of its kind in South Africa to be located adjacent to the sea-front, with views of large pods of resident dolphins or seasonal sightings of whales being the reward on offer during periodic breaks from serious business.

An integral part of the Premier Group and abutting the well-known and popular Regent Hotel, the ELICC meets the most demanding standards set by the international conferencing industry. For conferences of a more moderate size, delegates will not be disappointed with the other high-quality venues that continue to be available both in East London and further afi eld. The Kat Leisure Group have recently upgraded both the Osner and Kennaway Hotels, and are able to offer professional conference and banqueting services to groups of up to 400 in a sea-front setting.

Overlooking the spectacular Nahoon Estuary and an unrivalled location for a relaxing sundowner after a hard day’s work, the Blue Lagoon Hotel and Conference Centre offers competitive conference packages and a variety of accommodation options. Or if you’ve had

enough of talk, a two-minute stroll to the beach and some quality personal time may help to clear the head.

Conference-goers are warmly invited to come early and leave late, and a spouse or partner who may also be visiting will fi nd a lot to do…

Our natural coastal environment is quite unique, from the relaxed mood of the Sunshine Coast to the west, to the awesome cliffs of Morgan Bay in the east. Mpongo or Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserves (both of which also cater for conferencing) are close to the city for a wildlife experience to remember, while the misty mysteries of Hogsback are within reach of a day-trip. The popular East London Golf Course is kept in excellent condition, while a clear view of the ocean is available from every fairway of the equally splendid West Bank course. Further afi eld, the Stutterheim Country Club or the beautiful Fish River Sun course are well within striking distance. And for a working lunch or relaxing evening meal, a number of excellent and easily accessible restaurants will provide a memorable gastronomic experience.
