Individual Development Plans

Individual Development Plans (IDP) helps identify the employee’s career development goals and the strategies for achieving them. Typically, the employee will complete an IDP on an annual basis. This plan is intended to:

•Encourage the employee to take ownership of his/her career development •Provide an administrative mechanism for identifying and tracking development needs and plans •Assist in planning for the agency’s training and development requirements.

Mentoring: Formal and Informal

• Many agencies run formal, stand-alone mentoring programs to enhance employee career development. Formal programs include a matching process, mentor/,mentee training, formal mentoring agreement, structured developmental activities, formal evaluation process, and a graduation ceremony

• Informal Mentoring is another option for employees to enter into a mentoring partnership. Informal mentoring has less structure and no formal matching process

• Informal mentoring is usually initiated by the mentee
