This submission is considered to be the most favourable received from those approached, including the Bank of Queensland and the Commonwealth Bank, by offering a competitive interest rate and flexibility of draw down on the loan by using surplus Club funds to reduce our interest expense. The recommendation is to borrow $250,000 over five years at a variable interest rate with the option to change to a fixed rate at a later time should the circumstances warrant such a change. The Club will firstly use its surplus funds up to a maximum of $200,000 then draw down the loan funds as required. The use of Club funds to this level was approved by Club Members at the Special General Meeting held last year. The loan repayments will be between $5000 and $5100 per month - the actual amount being fixed when the contract documentation is finalized. The total yearly repayments of the loan will be covered by savings identified in the original proposal for greens funding and presented to Club Members. Once the loan has been repaid after 5 years, the Club will continue to pay an amount of $5000 per month into a high yielding bank deposit account to ensure there is sufficient cash available for green surface replacement in the future. It is expected that replacement of the green's surface could be required after approximately 10 years of use. With the commencement of work on the front green due to occur on the 11th of July, all is now in place for the project to proceed according to our plans. Completion of both greens is expected by late August depending on favourable weather conditions. MAY ‘11 Email: [email protected] | [email protected]

At the April Management CommitteeMeeting, a "Strategic Business Plan 2011-2013" for the Buderim Bowls Club Inc. waspresented to Committee Members for theircommitment towards future planning forour Club, and to highlight those areas of ourClub's business and facilities that will needattention in the near future. Those projectshave been a given a certain time frame andpriority, and it now requires our FinanceCommittee to revise our forward budgetingaccording to our funding needs and projecttiming. This financial planning will, ofcourse, take in the commitment to syntheticgreens and the related funding

arrangements as well as rental income fromthe front shed lease and redundancypayments for staff etc.

The Strategic Plan is far too detailed todetail in this Bulletin so if anyone isinterested in reading a copy, please do nothesitate to ask any member of theManagement Committee for a loan of theirdocument. If you would like to see itelectronically, that can be arranged via thePresident. The financial supportingdocumentation is yet to be finalized, butnow the loan arrangements for the greensproject is approved, that detail will beforthcoming.

The Power of Positive Thinking!!!

The day for our Annual Easter Medleyarrived and was looking very dreary, wet andgloomy. So, what do you do - hang in andwait and wait.....and it turned out to be agreat day!! Despite a slightly late start, the 8games were finished ahead of schedule andthe feedback has been very positive. Mysincere thanks to Tony Jardim who has beensponsoring our Medleys now for a numberof years and thanks also to the Ladies Clubfor their contribution. It would be nice tosee Tony join us on the green for our nextMedley in September. The winners for theday were Max Kitto's team from MaroochySwan and they have already nominated forthe September Medley with a promise tobring more teams with them. My sincere

thanks to the Buderim men and ladies whocontributed to the success of the day, notonly on the day, but for quite a few monthsprior.

The Ladies Singles final between HelenYoung and Chris McFarlane will be held onTuesday afternoon 3rd May. Have a greatgame girls!! It is hoped the Pairs will befinalised in a couple of weeks. Since the last report it has been decided togo ahead with the synthetic greens and thestart date has been set as 11th July. Onegreen will be replaced at a time and therewill always be one green for our players.Maybe we will have to play fours for acouple of months.

Once we get our new greens we will haveto use them as much as possible to makethem cost effective. I know we all loveplaying bowls at Buderim and we are agenuine Bowls Club so it is up to us, oneand all, to make sure the club succeeds intothe future.

Remember John F Kennedy said in a speechin 1963 'ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRYCAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CANDO FOR YOUR COUNTRY" the sameapplies to us at the Buderim Bowls Club.

We will need to target the youngerpopulation to come and play, I know myselfthat I wish I had started playing long beforeI did, but at that stage I never thought thatBOWLS IS A YOUNG PERSONS GAMEPLAYED BY OLDER PEOPLE.

The Buderim Prestige Fours eventscheduled for 28th and 29th Maysponsored by KRUGER LAW and BROWNREALTY BUDERIM is fully booked and I have2 teams on the reserve list, not bad seeing

that we still have a few weeks to go untilthe event. I will be asking our Umpires fortheir support and attendance over the twodays and hopefully we will have plenty ofmembers along as spectators over theweekend.

Later in the year I will be looking at acouple more events such as 2 bowl triplesand 3 bowl pairs to encourage bowlersfrom other clubs to come to Buderim, andI ask you to support tournaments at otherclubs and then we will get them back toour events. Keep your eye on the noticeboard for coming events at other clubs.

Until next month

A great turnout by club members and the crewfrom the Buslink social club, with costumesranging from hippies to Bob Marley, ensuredeveryone attending the 60/70’s night had agreat time.

The boards on the dance floor might have tobe replaced at the same time as the greens asthey would have been worn out after all thedancing that took place.

Tony Worsley provided an excellent range ofsongs that brought back quite a few memoriesfor the appreciative crowd. Unfortunately afew may not remember anything at all (butthat’s another story).

The two girls in the kitchen (Fiona & Kylie),with a little help from Jeff Paterson, produceda wonderful meal. Hor’s douvres were served

to a very crowded bar before everyone movedinto the dining area for beautiful lamb andchicken mains followed by mudcake and amuch enjoyed baked cheesecake. All the plateswere empty when returned to the kitchen.

A big thanks must also go to the 5 helpersfrom the Sunshine Coast TAFE College. Theservice and professionalism from these guysand girls were a credit to them and theirteachers.

The best dressed for the evening was too closeto call so was shared between Steve Mason &Ken Wright, but to all who made the effort todress up it really helped bring a great vibe towhat truly was a very enjoyable night and avery successful night for the club.

See back page for more pics.

Club rocks for60/70’s night

Can someone get this scary clown away from me.

Proof that Berry can smile when he comes to the club!

Where’s Campbo put Dunney - obviously the wig didn’t tasteas good as the rest of him.

Bob Marley obviously shared some of his stashwith Steve Ogden.

Our Ladies Committee was delighted toWelcome Ken Wright to our meeting on19th April. He was most informativeabout both the timetable for the newgreens installation and the projectedplans for the future growth of our club.He willingly answered the manyquestions fired at him and we all feelwe have a better understanding of thedirection in which the club is heading.

The first general meeting of the yearfollowed the Committee meeting. Only8 ladies bothered to attend. It is verydisappointing to find such apathyamongst our members.

We were very sorry to receive a letterfrom Margaret Groves resigning as ourGames Director and as a delegate toSCDLBA. Margaret has done a great jobas Games Director but found her healthwas being affected. It is a full time andoften stressful position. We wish herwell and hope she enjoys her bowlswithout the added responsibilities.

We also received resignations fromMargaret and Jeanette Burke as Pennantselectors, so now we have 3 positions tofill. If you can help, application formsare on the board in the foyer. Pleasehand to Mary before our next meetingon the 10th May.

The ladies had a vote on what theyprefer for afternoon tea and the resultswill be handed to Assistant ProvidoresAlma and Jan.

There was much discussion about ournew shirts which have proved to be veryunpopular - too bulky, too hot and ill-fitting. It was decided to keep our

current shirts for Pennant and look atnew designs later in the year. There areenough shirts around for all Pennantplayers to be able to borrow one ifrequired.

Our Honour Boards are to be replacedwith a single board in the same style asthe mens club at a Coast of $400,which the ladies have agreed to pay.The Life Membership board will bemoved to the ladies room where thenew boards will also be hung.

Our Easter medley was held on 20thApril and was a tremendous successthanks to the efforts of Margaret Grovesand Elaine Bienholz whose organizationwas spot on and our wonderful ladies inthe kitchen. Assistant Providores Alma,Jan and their helpers served a deliciouslunch which was much appreciated andenjoyed by all players, as was morningtea and nibbles after the game. After avery wet start the skies cleared, the sunshone and the games started only 20minutes behind schedule. The first timevisitors to our medley were veryimpressed with the format of playingsingles, pairs, triples and fours duringthe day. The winners were a team fromSwan with Buderim second, TewantinNoosa third and Buderim scoopedfourth and fifth prizes.

Our grateful thanks to Tony Jardim ofLakeshore Denture Clinic for hisgenerous sponsorship of this event witha donation from two of our ownmembers as well, which was warmlyreceived.

Great to see so many of our bottles ofwine walk out the door on Saturday night. These will soon be replaced by somebrand new stock that our providore hasbeen looking at for some time.

The footy comp is going along quite wellwith Jeff Pato holding onto a slender leadthanks to his bonus round. The first full

a few select wordsby ‘Head Selector’ Ted Field

Last month we talked on compatibility andmotivation. To elaborate, let's be realisticand say what happens at Bowls in the realworld.

Natural Tendencies:

In the team environment there are manyaspects of team functioning that need to beadjusted to enable progress of performance.

Most players in a team have a high degreeof self interest in our sport but when itcomes to harmony, tolerance, sharing, selflessness and thinking about others, wefind that in most cases these attributes arenot the most natural tendencies. Somebehavioural aspects need to be improvedand worked on.

Behavioural Changes:

In bowls, too often the final team scorer, orthe exceptional individual performer, gets allthe credit, and others who were part of thesame team, may have contributed a lesser oreven greater effort to the game, remain inthe background.

Deep down, over-recognition or lack ofrecognition disrupts the continuity of teambonding. It is therefore imperative that webring each individual team member to anacceptable level of contribution which isabove that particular playing grade.

Imbalance Playing Skills:

To any observer, it is obvious when teamsare selected, that within the individualpositions played, there are in many cases animbalance of the playing skills.

Hypothetically speaking, if we were to giveeach playing position a competency ratingof 10, you would find an up or down ratingof; lead 6, second 8, third 5, or skip 9; orover a series of assessments a

conglomeration of up and down figureratings that never level out, because manyplayers perform well one day and poorly thenext. If not checked, reflects in the samemanner on team rating within a side.

Selection:

It is usually most difficult within clubs tomake practise compulsory, for players to beconsidered for inclusion in a team. In a Stateside where all are vying for the opportunityto play, this aspect is not a problem, but ina club side, a few players are so selective ofwhat grade and what position they thinkthey should play, selection becomes one oftrying to pacify and entice players to pleasegive their selected position a chance.Fortunately at Buderim, I hope we do nothave that problem.

Skills Training:

With the above diatribe in mind, a skillstraining session will be commenced early inMay.

All aspects of play will be practiced.

Leads will be particularly urged to practisetheir art of the Draw; Seconds their On-Shot, Draw and Drive. The Skips and Thirdswill then need only to practise positionalplay.

Sessions will be held EVERY SATURDAY from11.00/11.30AM to say 12.00/12.30PM withprizes to be won!

The usual Saturday afternoon game willfollow with emphasis on pennant play.

Please try to make yourself available forthese sessions.
